The history channel and nostradamus
a funny thing happened on the way to the forum.

They are backing away from sadam being it, or for that matter now our wonderful friend OBL...

And now we have Georgie as the candidate, but not really since he walked out of it and now Obama is the Antichrist.

Now here is a piece of trivia for those of us who have been keeping track of this crap, mostly for fun, well Kennedy was too. So there is no one to be it. Oh and they are really getting all wishy washy.

Of course, if Bush was it and he died tomorrow...

Oh and this is traditional fodder for the RW...

So in case you wonder, those programs in the HC are truly about the RW. And yes I know most of you KNOW this... but our RWer readers may not realize how well controlled they are.

48. Actually niether of those boys
the HC is part of the RW noise machine... and all that crap and propaganda has a goal. It is far more enjoyable than watching FOX and Friends... but it is the same propaganda. Why the Antichrist is Obama.

Oh and Fox continues to loose money... I doubt the HC makes too much of a profit. They throw us a history bone or two every six months, but it is part of the propaganda machine.

58. Cable channels tend to morph from their original programming concept
in order to survive - what's hilarious is that they don't bother to change their names (even when the old name no longer makes any sense). Over the years, I've seen at least three cable channels radically alter their programming concept - A&E (Arts and Entertainment) and Bravo (originally very high brow, high culture channels) and American Movie Classics (originally a classic movies channel) all morph into basically nothing more than another version of TNT.

63. I hate how American Movie Classics takes movie CLASSICS and re-edits them for cable.
I mean, WTF?

They're CLASSICS!

If Charles Bronson says the word "shit" ONCE in "The Dirty Dozen," then don't edit the fucking CLASSIC Movie on "American Movie CLASSICS."

They may as well call it, "Movies that were classics until we bleeped naughty words and removed all the nipples."

52. You know what's sad about that?
The History Channel has such a rich amount of actual history that they *could* feature. It had the potential to be the most fascinating channels on cable.

Instead, it's Hitler and mysticism and crap history like their segment in which they claimed LBJ killed Kennedy (which actual historians protested so mightily that they had to convene a 'discussion panel' after airing this humiliation).

PBS does such an amazing job with American Experience - their program on Emma Goldman was riveting - and it makes you realize what a dumb lost opportunity the History Channel is. They should flush it and start over, because there ain't no there, there.

54. Depends. If their objective was to show history
they have failed miserably.

If their objective was to show propaganda... they have succeeded beyond a shadow of a doubt. They throw some real history every so often to keep us "happy."

But you know how the AHA calls them? The History Channel where history becomes a lie.

What is maddening is that at times they have some of their crap with some truth in there... like when they did the Anneverde programs on the search of origins in Nazi Germany. That happened... it was their take that had quite a bit of creative licenses.

they are talking of the Bilderberger and all that crap, and their expert to debunk this illumitai thing is a conspiracy is Richard Pipes. I was laughing on two grounds

He IS a certified neo con... talk of a conspiracy

He is an expert in the USSR... and RUSSIAN history... if he was talking of Russian History... ok... but he was talking of things that I am sure are far more qualified historians out there. In fact, I have read some of them.

Now are the illuminati real? I don't know, but god they are FUN for a role playing game or two.

22. George W. Bush has not yet ruled the world for seven years.
He ruled America for eight.

But if there's a coup, and he takes-over America again and launches an even larger war of colonization, he could conceivably take-over the world.

Problem is, only conservatives seem to write end-times novels.

Liberals write things like "Soylent Green" and "The Day After Tomorrow."

Conservatives write things like "Left Behind."

We need a Liberal to right an end-times novel about a a Conservative pResident abusing his power to Immanentize The Eschaton to bring Jesus back, without realizing he's actually playing into the hands of his Vice-pResident, The Antichrist.

Oh I forgot I have submitted stories dabbling with the extreme religious right wing. I have never seen a rejection slip so fast in my life. That was early 2003 and the mag was Asimov... and no, it didn't have to do with how it was written... there are certain subjects they don't want to touch these days.

Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 09:45 PM by Ian David
And it needs to be written in a way that fundies will find to be consistent with scripture.

Granted, the end-times stuff is a blueprint for the end of the world, whether there actually is a god or not.

But IMHO, a great sci-fi story needs to be written, citing actual scripture, in which an actual god and an actual Satan create an actual War of Armageddon complete with actual Rapture, due to the misguided actions of Conservative assholes trying to bring Jesus back.

And I say, go ahead and use the names of real people as characters in the story.

Dante did it when he wrote The Inferno.

Go ahead and name Dick Cheney as The Antichrist and George W. Bush as his unwitting dupe in the destruction of Humanity.

Someone should write "The Great American Left Behind For Liberals Novel."

Or create it as a television series.

It's about time The Whedonverse expanded to a network other than Fox.

77. What Nostra was doing, this is the agreement among those
with actual common sense... (and history degrees) is social commentary on his times.

Lets face it, that was not a time when calling the King the Antichrist due to his social policies would be healthy.

So in that sense he is fascinating to read, trying to figure out what he actually meant.

But prophecy... beyond seeing patterns in history...

Or I'd have to call Toynbee and the rest prophets too.

Oh and Chariots of the Gods and Erik Von Danikken... yep guilty as charged. I have used it... not like Battlestar Galactica (1970s) and a slew of other pieces of fiction haven't either.

Now Nostradamus... I have toyed with the idea of making him a time traveler at times...

Now the reality, those quatrains were social commentary for the days he lived. That freedom of speech and thought was ahem... not encouraged and the cleansing fires of the Inquisition were not a way to go.

Hamurabi and the rest of the Law Givers.

This is no longer legend but reality...

So been playing with the idea of using the Bible and other religious books. We have so many books that could be taken that way.

53. Prophesy was used to keep people in line.
The end is coming, and you don't want to go to head and be tortured for all eternity because you forgot to confess that kiss you got back in the sixth grade.

I used ot be fascinated by the stuff, but over time I have come to accept that prophesy is as real as the Wizard of Oz.

The History Channel seems to believe its audience is comfortably right wing in the way the frame everything.

74. The only valid reason to use End Times prophesy is to help people get laid.
Anything else is just unethical.

59. Croatoan
http://nativeamericanfirstnationshistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/croatoan_and_the_mystery_of_roanok

Though the English government officially declared the colony of Roanoke “lost” in 1597, no official explanation as to the fate of the colonists has ever been accepted. However, the facts surrounding the establishment of this ill-fated settlement and its relations with neighboring Indian tribes may shed some light on this somewhat perplexing mystery. The only clue as to the whereabouts of the colony was the word CROATOAN, which was carved in large ominous letters on a tree in the center of the abandoned settlement. But, what did it mean? Was this message intended to inform Governor John White as to the colony’s destination after abandoning the settlement? If so, did they go of their of their own free will, or were they forced to retreat—and if this was the case, by whom? This article will explore both the changing historical interpretation of the events surrounding the colony’s disappearance and the external relations between the colonists and their Indian neighbors. Here are the facts of the case as history and subsequent investigation have revealed.

60. The History channel has had a lot of weird shows on lately
Besides their shows about Nostradamus, there's Monsterquest, UFO Files, Ice Road Truckers about guys driving trucks in Alaska, and AxMen about guys cutting down trees. There's a new show called Pawn Stars, a reality show set in Las Vegas about a pawn shop. What's that all about and what the heck does it have to do with history?

67. I guess we're the Republicans now
We can't even enjoy a show on Nostradamus without making it political.

I think some folks take this shit too seriously.
