80% of the U.S. DISAPPROVES of the GOP (except for the South)
Nothing says FRINGE Party more than this Research 2000 poll.
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_09/020010.php

When you take out the South, only 11% approve of the GOP, 80% disapprove.

That squarely places the GOP in a regional party category. They are absolutely failing to maintain a national reputation.

And when you consider their numbers in the south, a 50% approval rating there doesn't say very much about a regional party, especially when the disapproval in the South is 48%.

If the GOP doesn't change fast, they are not just toast, but headed for burnt toast territory.

1. Maybe if Dems give in to everything they want, they'll regain their status.
We sure seem to be trying to help them out, eh?

12. they would still appear magnanimous if they listened to GOP sugestions then...
Sighed and said, "We were hoping the Republicans had something to offer, but they just trotted out the same old snake oil that puts profits for the wealthy few over the health and even lives of the rest of us. We will not risk one life simply to avoid hurting the feelings of an insurance industry owned republican"

8. Hmm
I have ben thinking for months now that the DLC is trying to carry them for a few rounds to justify their own existence. After all if the Republicans are toast then why would you ever need 'third way' or 'new democrats' to compromise with them.

Moreover, how does a weak and dilapitated Repuke party provide cover for corporatist campaign contributions based voting?

It's now an appealing Democratic, blue state, golden brown!

Bon appetit!

3. Nixon got what he wanted
Remember, it was Nixon (with help from Pat Buchanan) who came up with the "Southern Strategy". Reagan followed it to the letter by kicking off his campaign in Nightrider, Mississippi.

Now the chickens have come home to roost, and there are no egg-laying hens among the bunch, just a bunch of preening roosters who are only good for the stew pot.

9. Perhaps you may want to go back to stats class
You may not have noticed, but Congressional approval ratings are almost always fairly low, yet most people tend to support their own Congressperson and rate them higher than others.

Another point is that the reason Congress tend to get lower numbers is because when you look at those who disapprove of them, some do so because they disagree with their platforms and think Congress goes too far, and some because they think Congress does not go far enough with real change. In other words, even if 80% disapprove of Congressperson X, 40% of them may still be supporters who want them to be tougher, and 40% may support their opponent.

Anyway, welcome to DU. A hint: you may want to try to do more than just repeat things - instead of complaining about how awful the government is and discussing that things are tied (something which has no basis in reality), perhaps you could try being more active to bring about meaningful change and debate. Get invested in local politics, volunteer for charity to advocate for the poor, or even run for office yourself.

This is why I do not understand anti-government attitudes from people like yourself. Instead of being the government (you know, like how the Constitution says we are the power behind the government), you just complain about it without wanting to do any of the heavy lifting. And the right faisl at this time and time again: they think their teabag rabble rousing is being the government, but they are not only just complaining (and I fully support the right to protest), but they are not even complaining coherently, intelligently, nor are they making any sense.

Please forgive me if I am misunderstanding your post, btw.

22. This is heavily influenced by the Senate being loaded with cons in both parties
that over represent a small minority of people with nearly equal strength as majority. Gerrymandering has had some impact on the House as well but the Senate institutionally gives the Republicans and conservatives overall greatly more representation than the numbers merit.

Look at the Baucus bill and the gang of six. The bill stinks of being crafted by low population/low cost of living reps that depend mightily on corporate contributions.

20. The GOP is in trouble with minorities and younger people. The last stronghold they have is the South
They are dying as a party. They may bounce back as its hard to kill cockroaches. This is what happens when you let the extremes of the party take it over. They have nothing but crazies running the show. But of course, the media most show the 20%-ers. The rest of us normal folk get pushed to the side. We are uninteresting.

21. 2010 is critical
if they fail to make any inroads, or just make them in the South... I am smelling the Whigs all over again. The same happened to them... well very similar...

So at that point perhaps the Dems will split between the liberal wing and the conservative wing, or will see the rise of a third party... to replace the GOP.

Hell if the libertarians were able to organize themselves, they are even worst than the dems, they could replace the GOP... but wet cats come to mind...

30. They are going the way of the Federalists
And for some of the same reasons: undeclared war, politicizing the legal system, clamping down on civil rights. Much of which was intended to create an enduring Federalist control of the government because Adams thought they were the only party capable of governing. The Federalists never won the White House again after Adams and disappeared a few decades later.
