Coburn Aide: If Boys Knew Porn Will Turn Them Gay, They Won't Want Playboy

In an infamous moment at the Values Voter Summit over the weekend, captured on video by Dave Weigel, Sen. Tom Coburn's (R-OK) chief of staff Michael Schwartz made the case against pornography. "All pornography is homosexual pornography," said Schwartz, quoting an ex-gay friend of his, "because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards."

Schwartz then explained the side benefit of this finding -- that if boys know pornography will make them gay, they'll never touch it, taking advantage of what Schwartz sees as a natural homophobia. "And if you tell an 11-year-old boy about that, do you think he's going to want to get a copy of Playboy?" he said. "I'm pretty sure he'll lose interest. That's the last thing he wants!"

1. Here's a guy who hasn't seen gay porn.

Becoming friends with a guy I worked with (who was gay) we were doing a job shooting VCR's for a catalog.

I took the opportunity to hook some of them up and we went to copying tapes for ourselves until we had to return them.

Many, many years ago, a clinical term for homosexuality was "sexual inversion," and was based on "scientific" theories that homosexuality was little more than a case of arrested sexual development. That is, the thinking was that everyone went through a juvenile phase of physical self love that developed into good old "normal" heterosexuality. Homosexuals hadn't progressed out of the self love phase, and were labeled "sexual inverts."

This is, of course, nonsense. But Schwartz's use of the word "inwards" to describe the sexual drive for homophobia indicates to me that he (and most likely his boss) haven't done any reading or study of the subject since the 1920s or so. Which makes them uninformed nitwits who should be ignored.
