This may be my "Hail Mary" pass:
First of all, I think this was the prayer this famous phrase probably refers to:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Now, some people here will not like this, but for some reason this prayer gives me great comfort. Years ago, when I was a practicing Catholic, I told my very conservative Catholic father that this was the prayer I said. I remember him saying that the Memorare was an "arrogant" prayer. I never had the guts to follow up on that statement...

Anyway, my "Hail Mary" pass tonight is that I think that the American people are going to come though on health care.

I think this because most of the humans I come in contact with everyday are very decent people.

They would give you the shirt off their back.

They would be with you in time of need.

They love their children, their parents, their friends and they would not want harm to come to them.

They are intelligent, thinking beings.

They will see through all this right wing rabid hate.

They will do the right thing.

Think about the people you know...don't you come to the same conclusion or is it just a "Hail Mary" pass on my part?

2. You might be able to bet on it....
I wonder of Bodog or any of the other online gambling sites have any action on health care reform? You never know what they'll have up there.

where these pieces of shit can't be found.

6. And then there's my teabagger sister...
If I'm the only liberal in a family of highly educated people, then for some reason I just don't have the positive outlook you have.

Or maybe it's just my family that's nuts.

22. No, my family is nuts too. You're not alone.
It's hard, especially when I'm watching my nieces and nephews being brainwashed.

7. Mother Mary
would definitely want Universal Coverage.

That is certain.

Thanks for sharing that prayer.

It's pretty cool.

9. Michael Moore said it best
In Fahrenheit 911, when protested at a slackers rally by supporters of the Iraq war, he asked them:

"Who would Jesus bomb?"

I'm reminded of that, when I'm minded to ask the teabaggers,

"Who wouldn't Jesus heal?"

8. Hail Mary
Hail Mary
The Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death.
Amen

OK, I know that I was once an altar boy, but I've been an evangelical atheist for over three decades. Spooky that that stuff is still in there.

Just thought I'd add it to the record, for accuracy.

As a football pass, I believe the sense of the title is that the only chance that this pass would have would be through divine intervention, so those are the words that leave the quarterback's lips as he moves from the physical part of launching the pass to initiating the 'guidance system,' so to speak.

Drop by the Atheists/Agnostics group in your travels. :)

I have a similar regard for prayer. OTH, if it makes someone feel good... I'll enlighten them another time.

24. Many thanks
The fact that I couldn't remember it entirely accurately is darkly atheist street cred.

My favourite inaccuracy is from my wife, who survived convent school with almost no knowledge of what Catholicism means.

One day, she was talking to me about the seven apostles.

"No, that would be dwarves, dear," I answered.

I've never been more proud of her.

14. I sure hope you're right.
I'm not Catholic, and honestly I cringe at the Mary worship thing.

That aside, I agree that most people are honest and caring humans. When I meet someone, I assume they have good intentions until proven otherwise. Thankfully, that's usually the case.

Eventually we will do the right thing. Why? Because we'll never give up.

Never. There are more of us.

18. I'm a pantheist and I LOVE Mary worship. Consider it residual from the old days
God-ness was not always a male only club. That there is still worship of the female aspect brings me comfort. Catholic worship always seemed to be just the re-packaging of older worship traditions to me. The more I read, the more I feel this is true.

And I, too, hope good people will prevail. Owing to my recent state, I will stop there and not add anything about time frames ;)

20. I come to the same conclusion. It's the time for this to happen, and for it to happen right,
and the right people are in the position to make it happen.

History happens. Why not now? Why not us?

I feel confident in my bones.

23. It's not the people that are the problem but the leaders
However, for some reason I think this is going to happen and we'll get a public option.

My father would have loved that prayer - he was very devoted to the Virgin Mary and my real name is in her honor, and is about as Catholic as you can get :-)
