3. My best guess is they were sitting on their smug, arrogant asses when GWB won again in 2004.
I mean, in 2004 Bush won, and both houses of congress were firmly within Republican grasp. They were putting in their far right judges one at a time on the Supreme Court.

The fuckers had it all. They were sitting on their asses leaning back in their chairs, and their chairs fell over.

5. They were minding their own business and being good to their neighbours.
They sent their kids to public schools and dreamed of owning a bigger house. Then they turned on fox news and slowly started to believe the untruths. That government should never be involved in any policy. That god, gays and guns were the only domestic isssues facing america that needed fixing. Then they voted for Bush and never saw or heard any other views of the world because they were tuned to fox, talking only to fellow churchgoers. They were taught that Hitler was in fact a socialist. That government only wanted to take their money to give it to blacks. That Bush was a great war president (who cares if he had both houses of congress and he did nothing about abortion or if his economics resulted in a subprime mortgages). Then they had the promise of someone exactly like them could be VP (Sarah Palin). They saw the world as she did (she reflected their lack of curiosity about the world). And then Obama stole it all. And worse he was bringing socialism to the USA for the first time ever (ignoring all the other government programs). So they march march march to turn things back to when they were perfect under Bush where they had a feeling they belonged.

The GOP changed their thinking and now they struggle to find a context they feel comfortable in. And the GOP will never let it be with Obama on any issue. Though Obama tries to give them back context and claims he understands them and why they feel angry. Good luck to him on luring the base back from KAOS of the New American Century.
