2. I'm probably one of the few here
But I've always liked the Nostradamus shows on History channel. I really like that they're getting into the whole "the world's ending in 2012" stuff. I find it entertaining.

4. They are
but what I find dangerous is how the thing changes to fit a certain ideological bent. I mean Obama is the Antichrist. after all the rest didn't pan out.

And that is dangerous.

Now what I'd love them do is... a program on Nostra, in his historical milieu and damn it what those things could really mean in the context of the era. That would be history.

11. I thought the show I saw yesterday discussed multiple people that the anti-Christ could be/been
They talked about George W Bush, Osama and then Obama...and maybe the Pope, but it boiled down to, "there's no telling."

And haven't they done a show similar to what you're suggesting? The one from a few years ago, it's a couple of hours long.

13. Yeah but they did go into prophecy
I want some REAL historians, not the kooks.

And the no telling is because they pushed OBL for so long. This same program gets changed and edited to fit whatever is the agenda.

18. I agree
I still like the shows though. Maybe I should add them to my guilty pleasure tv shows (which includes Bridezilla, those are some crazzzy women!)

;)

17. A real shame, too
There's so much REAL history I'd love to know about but the so-called "History" Channel has morphed into a joke of monsters, myths and mysticism.

Medusa on the History channel website.

Imagine this,... she can't mess around because she has taken an oath of celibacy to the goddess Athena, however because she is beautiful she gets raped by the god Poseidon, the god of the Sea. Is then not only chastised by Athena but is changed into a Gorgon which means losing her good looks, is exiled to an island, had a really bad hair day aka~ a head of deadly snakes, and if thats not enough, her looks are so bad she can turn people into stone...

later, is beheaded by some fresh faced kid named Prometheus because shes now a valuable weapon of mass destruction,(not her fault for turning people into stone..) and was used in death to take down two corrupt Kings (Prometheus's mother was to be married without her permission to a corrupt King who has exiled her son, Prometheus)..plus later used as a breast ornament on the very Goddess who turned her into a Gorgon in the first place.

Talk about a crappy life!

22. The narration and choice of what historical events to include or exclude
changes based on current events. The history channel often tells stories of political events today in the telling of its stories on history.

I have seen many different versions of historical events made to match today's events, all you have to know is the symbols they use and the perspective and you can find current events in the stories.

Although I will say I really enjoyed one of the versions of the story of the Battle of Leyte Gulf where the tin cans charged the Cruisers and Battleships.

I remember one of the story pretty good, they said the Roberts charged the fleet firing its torpedoes and getting in so close the big guns of the heavier ships could not fire low enough to get big hits on the little ships. And how with 5" deck guns they went for the superstructure of the cruisers and battle ships, then as the Roberts peeled off, the Johnson came up unloading its torpedoes.

The story had only a little to do with history, most of it was matching current events, and I have heard that same story told 3 different times, each time different based on current news context, but I did like that telling of the story.

The history channel also takes lobbyist money to put on shows, I have seen marketing people put that on their resumes or talk about it in speeches.

The history channel makes up alot of stuff, or at least tells it in a way that is not just about history.

27. As a historian, let me just say that
history is not just all about events of the past. It is about connections and inter-relationships with the past - with the present. It is necessarily about interpretation and point of view.

A historian should be like my cat. She walks through the same room every day, but move one chair and she has to get up on it to view what is from that perspective, for her, a whole new room.

A good historian will take every opportunity to look at something from a different point of view.

And of course new information is being uncovered every day. There is no definitive history. as William Faulkner said (not exact quote) The past isn't dead -- its not even past.

BTW, I have a very good friend who is a history professor at North Carolina State, who I respect very highly, who has appeared in at least one of their shows.

34. I understand what you're saying but...
I have so much to learn about the history and culture of indigenous American peoples yet about the only mention of them of THC is in the context of 2012 prophecies or UFOs. I have much to learn about the period of slavery in this country (and other nations) but how many programs about this subject have you seen on THC? If the "History" Channel can produce countless programs on doomsday prophecies and monsters, how about some balance? How about a real history of the Middle East, African nations, the colonization of Central and South America, etc. I have virtually no knowledge of Carribean cultures and was shocked to read just the other day about Napolean's genocide in Haiti.
Really, THC has gone off the deep end and ought to be sued for false advertising.

35. My B.A. advisor appears on shows about...
the Middle Ages.
My current PhD advisor *should* be on shows discussing anything to do with the Mayan hocus pocus. He is an expert on Mayan religion and history...which just goes to show that the kooks get the airtime and experts get nothing.

In fact, one of our faculty members is a History Channel advisor. How messed up is that?

I would like more history, less UFOs and pseudo science. Course I love forensics shows, so I guess I can't get too high and mighty.

Oh, OT but...you are the reason I couldn't get my original alias. I tried to get Ashling and was denied! I love that name!

31. That's true, I could have tried that. Ah well...
I named my much loved late cat Ashling, because she was my "vision - daydream" which IIRC is what the name means, something to that effect. I chose my name quickly b/c I finally signed up when there was going to be a defcon and Skinner said non members might not be able to get in. Lurker extraordinaire before that! LOL

36. Yes, I prefer that spelling, but
I chose the Anglo spelling for my cat to avoid having to explain it to the vet all the time. LOL

When I get home, I'll post a pic of my Ashling if you would like to see her. She was a magnificent cat in every way. I still miss her.

Your name makes me smile btw, because I always think of her. It's an unusual name here.

is much better than Monsterquest. With the Nostradamus shows there are usually a variety of opinions and sometimes interesting historical information.

55 minutes of telling you how they are going to capture evidence of bigfoot, sea creatures, giant beasts, etc. etc.

5 minutes showing footage of raccoons, owls, house cats, etc. etc.
