ATLANTA, Ga. — Former Tuskegee Airman Robert J. Searcy has died of colon cancer at his granddaughter's home in Atlanta. He was 88.

Searcy's death on Sept. 7 came lest than eight months after he was among several Tuskegee Airmen who attended the inauguration of the nation's first black president, Barack Obama.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the country's first black military pilots and crew. They trained in Tuskegee and then fought with distinction in Europe during World War II. But they faced segregation when they returned home.
