My letter to Glenn Beck

Dear Mr. Beck,

I will start this letter with an honest admission. I do not agree with your political views. I take you in the spirit of Voltaire--I respect your right to speak your mind while exercising my right to change the channel.

However, as a Jew I am compelled to speak out about your recent suggestion that your fans use Sept. 28, 2009, Yom Kippur, as a day of fasting, atonement and prayers to change what you think is flawed in our current government. How dare you! Yom Kippur is the holiest day of our calendar. It is a day of PERSONAL reflection and prayer. Religious Jews believe that we must take time out to review our lives and think about how we can be better people and thus make the world a better place. The fact that you have suggested that non Jews co-opt this day for political reasons, not spiritual ones, is insulting and demeaning.

I do not know what your faith is, but please imagine what you would think about it is someone (perhaps that you disagree with) tried to co-opt the holiest day of your faith's calendar for a political purpose. I don't think you would like it very much.

If you must insist on continuing with this idea, please consider asking the people who watch and listen to your shows, read your books and attend events you support to dispense with the Nazi and Hitler imagery that seems to be filling up current public debate. These images are painful to many people, not just Jews, and do nothing to help citizens have a sensible, intelligent discussions on the best ways to solve problems that effect us all.

Somehow Mormons are said to harbour unhealthy amounts of anti-semitism - although I confess I wouldn't know why they are said to be so.

14. The mormons

have a habit of forgetting their own edict about not baptising Jews (necro dunking...baptism for the dead). They keep getting caught doing such things. So what does Beck care if he tramples all over a Jewish holiday? They are all doomed to become Mormon anyway.
