3. Ah, this was not planned |

Sometimes things happen. There is no overridding plan, no chess moves involved. The situation evolved based on what was going on at the time.
It would have been much, much better if health care had passed earlier in the year.

35. That is a conspiracy theory of a sort |
|
and a nice, comforting one that sort of supposes that someone with near supernatural powers is in charge of things. It supposes someone with more than human attributes that can see much farther than anyone else. Maybe that comforts some folks. I find that scary as hell, but I can see where it would comfort a few people.
Human beings make mistakes. Everyone, from Presidents on down, makes mistakes. Some mistakes are fatal, some are not. Smart human beings, smart in the ways of human nature and in seizing opportunities and recovering from adversity can take second chances and do something.
But it is highly doubtful that we have supernatural beings around who "know" what is going to happen or play cosmic chess with the lives of so many people.
Isn't the other, more human explanation full of enough courage and wonder and interest for you? Why the need to explain something so human, like politics, with explanations that are "other" and imbue folks we elect with qualities that are not available to mere humans? Isn't that anti-democratic in a way? Doesn't it place power and ability outside of the reach of too many people? Isn't that thought damaging to the very Republic we all hold so dear?

Really? You don't think they plan out how they are going to approach things and handle expected opposition? That's pretty naive to think that sort of planning doesn't happen.

5. The sad thing is that a lot of nice elderly people are now terrified. |
|
Today I was at my town Civic Center and it's in the same building as the Senior Citizens Ctr. I saw my neighbor Doris and her friends and they were very concerned. They don't have computers and cable so they really depended on those town meetings to help explain what HCR meant to them. They were upset because the screaming teabaggers stopped them from hearing information they needed to understand. I tried to reassure them but they are worried that their supplemental insurance will be changed and that they might have to change doctors.
They aren't against reform but because of these screaming fools they don't understand what reform is and what the different options are. Now that's what I think is unfair.

37. Unfortunately, a lot of these nice elderly are the most vulnerable... |
|
When it comes to the MSM corporate propoganda machine. Many of them spend a lot of time in front of the tube getting bonbarded with the likes of Hannity and Beckkk telling them Obama is trying to take away their medicare and send them to the death panels. Many of the elderly grew up in the age of Morrow and Cronkite and implicitly believe what is said on the "news" is true.
Door-to-door salesman selling them fraudulent insurance, televangulist convincing them to send their retirement savings for a prayer cloth and Hannity telling them that our black president is trying to take away their medicare, all equivalent examples.

18. A by-product of Obama's consensus-building strategy is |
|
that all parties involved get enough time to expose themselves.
Worked like a charm during the primaries when Hillary was driven to expose her dark side for everyone with eyes to see. Same with the motley crew of fools and parasites that's left of the GOP.

27. It was a big mistake. Obama & the Dems let the wingnuts |
|
rule the dialog. I spent a few years carefully educating the wingnut members and borderline members of my family & freinds about single-payer and health care reform. I then had to go back and re-educate them about the public option. In August my inbox became full with republican drivel from said family & friends totally freaking out. I manage to convince about 2/3rds of them to stay the course, the other third (about 15 people) told me to never email them about politics again.
What you don't get is that some people are willing to swing from reasonable to nutbag.

32. And how long have you been pounding the pavement for reform? |
|
I'm not the only one with this experience. Support for universal care/single-payer/public option has sunk from nearly 75% to just over 50%. In one frickin' month. Pelosi has stepped up her game but she is getting an earful from well-organized constituents.
As far as dialog goes, specifically, what dialog is Obama controlling?

39. It is not tough to figure out |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 05:12 AM by quaker bill
It is the same play he ran over and over again to end up in the Whitehouse. His opponents only begin to catch on after a defeat or two, and generally by then it is too late.
In general, he does not respond until "the stupid, it burns", then he drops on it. The most glaring example was in the general. McCain's general antics were not enough, even the selection of Palin was not enough for him to pounce. By not challenging and rebutting up front, he gives apparent license to his opponents to go farther, and they generally oblige. At some point, an "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" moment happens, then he drops promptly and full bore. Choosing the right moment to start the argument can dictate the outcome. It always does, but it is unusual to find a politician that knows this and has a true sense of timing for it.
edited to add:
BTW, it is not Chess, or paintball, it is basketball or football. Lots of head fakes to draw the opponent toward over commitment.
