State rules Montco pool discriminated by banning campers
A state investigation found that a Montgomery County swim club racially discriminated against 56 African-American and Hispanic children in June when it revoked an agreement to allow a Northeast Philadelphia day camp to use its pool after the children' first visit.

<snip>

The commission ordered the club to pay a $50,000 civil penalty for the club's discrimation again one child, whose parents filed the complain with the commission.

------

This is breaking locally here tonight and AP reported just a blip. It's on the 11:00 pm news.

Of course note the timing of this - at night. :eyes:

If you read through the article at the link, you'll note the mention of emails between members and the board that apparently complained about the race of the children. And that, along with the fact that the Commission found that when the club was reaching out for new members, they skipped over neighboring areas known to be higher in black population and focused specifically on soliciting white areas. What apparently fooled the club was that this club was located in a traditionally white neighborhood (Frankford) in the city.

Post-racial society? Not so much.

1. Kick & another story
http://www.kyw1060.com/Human-Relations-Commission--Swim-Club-Discriminate/5276542

KYW has the overhead photo of the pool on their report's webpage - the same one that they had mysteriously pulled back in July when the story broke... They had replaced that photo with a grounds shot that didn't show how large the pool really was when the sudden excuse was that there were "too many children (who couldn't swim) in the pool". I doubt the picture will stay there long, but we'll see.

2. If that $50K doesn't benefit the kids, what's the point?
Fine 'em, but extract damages too. It's the only way they learn.

3. A copy of the affidavit was posted in LBN
Pretty interesting reading!

http://media.nbclocalmedia.com/documents/Valley+Swim+Club+Ruling+Press_Statement_9_22_2009.pdf

As part of the judgment (that they call "Terms of Adjustment" which is located at the bottom of the document), it says "Respondent shall pay actual damages, including damages caused by humiliation and embarrassment", which suggests that this would go to the plaintiff.

From what the article suggests, all the children (via their parents/guardians) could sue for similar.

4. Morning kick
as they released this news late yesterday evening and the apologists still continue to try to justify the nonsense.
