If you could live anywhere, where would that be and why?
And what's wrong with where you're living?

I suspect this might be a lounge question, but I hope for more people to read this.

Hot, humid, and smelly streets made him appreciate Seattle more.

But maybe your nose isn't that sensitive to . . . organic materials. Try spending a couple of weeks in Manhattan in July and see what you think.

Sure, the subway can be sticky, but I like summers just fine in NYC. (Though a weeklong trip to Southern Cali had the perfect weather. But, we have... New York City!) Just saying.

100. I hadn't either. But smells are something people get used to.
When visitors come to our house for the first time, they often mention the smell of the fir trees (we're near a state park). But I hardly notice it anymore.

but my second choice would be the Bay Area, or anywhere along the West Coast north of San Francisco. I like the ocean, I like the mountains, so geographically Alaska is perfect for me.

The only thing wrong with living here is that politics tends toward the conservative. But our progressives are strong voices so we're hoping the tide is turning.

30. New Zealand. Clean air, unspoiled wilderness and universal healthcare.
I love where I live now for many reasons. Many people would be surprised at the advantages of living in big ol' boring, flat, rural Nebraska. I do have the fortune of living in a small town with a traditionally liberal University, and a neighborhood populated with Democrats. I could die here and be satisfied with my life. It may turn out that way....

If substantial progress in healthcare delivery is not made however, I will take my medical education to a place where I know I can treat my patients with equal regard. I do not want to die in a country that would treat her people so shabbily as my neighbors and children are treated now.

But a couple hundred acres in the Ozark Mountains with a good running creek, enough elevation for a little hydro power, and I would be be quite happy.

Beautiful country. Cheap land.

Might feel a little confined in New Zealand after a while.

The Texas central hill country will likely have to do though.

Those are realistic locales. I'd like to try both the city and the countryside. I've been to the UK (London only, and only for a day) and Japan (for a few weeks) but never Ireland. Will probably travel there within a few years.

Nothing really wrong with where I live now (Seattle area), just been here most of my life. Portland, Oregon is pretty cool--one of the few other U.S. cities in which I can see myself living. Great public transportation there, good restaurants, and Powell's Books.

My dream locations would be Sidney BC (absolutely perfect small town) or Oak Bay municipality of Victoria.

I actually already live on the island here, but not in those locations yet because I simply cannot afford them. It costs half a million to buy into an old home that doesn't work so well. The neighborhoods in both areas are amazing. Great walking, close-knit community, blocks of beautiful streets, amazing ocean views, low crime, plenty of activities, good facilities for children. I have found no places more perfect that those (I just can't afford to buy there, but might rent for a bit)

69. Vancouver Island for me & Mr Nay, too. Anywhere on the island,
really. We love Victoria, but also love the wildness of the north part, so anywhere would be fine!

30 minute ferry to Sidney/Victoria, and an awesome community on the island (but you are isolated). Very eclectic.

It's beautiful and different and I like Afrikaans.

I'm one of those rare people that could live anywhere if I put my mind to it, but it would mean leaving family. What's wrong with where I am is that it is boring.

Not telling which specific country, but I'll let you know when I get there. :)

I have wanted to move to Europe for about 5 years or so, but I always had plenty of reasons to stay in the USA, until lately. It will be a huge, difficult change, but I have so few reasons to stay here.

77. If I could live anywhere, I would choose to live:
At the foot, or on the knees, of a huge mountain range, complete with rocks, trees, meadows, and abundant rivers and lakes.

I'd set my house down in the center of a plot of land about 10 square miles, surrounded by hundreds of square miles of national forest.

I'd fence that plot of land, so that nobody got any further than the gate.

I'd make a trip to the nearest town, which would be small, ecumenical, environmentally responsible, and politically independent in nature, once a month for supplies. The biggest building in that town would be the public library.

I'd work from home on my computer to fund my life.

What's wrong with where I'm living? I've got a little space, and I can see mountains from here. Some of the things that are wrong with where I'm living:

The population is anti-intellectual and hard core conservative. The compensation for that, the rural environment, is being destroyed by the rampant growth of parasitic housing developments. While I have more space around me than many, my neighbor 6 acres over is noisy. He maintains his place with a cat that has a back-up alarm; it's always beeping, destroying the peace. He hauled off his old mobile home 4 years ago and built a new house; 2 stories right up next to the fence bordering our properties, so that my feeling of privacy has been violated.

81. Vancouver B.C.
The only thing missing from where I live now is quick access to mountains.

Vancouver would cover all my recreational passions nicely. In addition to being a very cool city.

There are few places in the world where you can sail big water and ski mountains...within a 30 minute drive from home.

Maybe Reno...but I am so not into the gambling thing and the wind on Lake Tahoe I heard is weird.

Amazing homes that are affordable.

The Detroit River and waterways everywhere.

Music.

Sports.

The Midwestern lifestyle.

Family and familiarity.

A community where I could make a real difference.

What more is there?

with a glorious view of the bridge and the bay. I love SF, so much to do there. Actually, any town on California's coast between Sausalito and Santa Barbara.

Outside the US, it would have to be either Portofino on the Italian Riviera, or a villa in Santorini, Greece. I'm so sick of living inland, I need water!!

I want to take a trip there some day. Yeah, it has like the top 10 most deadliest creatures that could kill you living there. It also has the biggest coral reef in the world, rainforest, desert, beautiful beaches and coastal areas, and is considered the oldest continent on Earth. And it has kangaroos and koala bears. I so want to go someday.
I still like where I live in CT though. Nice little town.

Lots and lots of trees.

Jungle trees, or maybe lots of conifers.

But, barring that, I'm perfectly happy where I am now.

I love the weather, the vibes, the high-tech, closeness to San Francisco, the liberalism, and the easy access to world-class wineries. I don't love the price of houses, though. :(

I live in the Washington DC area. Do I really have to spell out for you what's wrong with this place? Too cold in winter. Too hot in summer. Stupid drivers. Gets over-run with Republicans every so often. People come here to protest and crap all over everything. Traffic nightmares.

Actually, if I could live anywhere overseas, it would be Brisbane, Australia. But not right now!

104. Star Valley, Wyoming, because I've already lived there and miss it. My
typical day was driving through this beautiful mountain valley to the Snake River Canyon between Alpine and Jackson Hole, where I worked along the base of the Tetons and in the Jackson valley area. I would see wildlife everyday, like Bald Eagles fishing the Snake River in the mornings and herds of elk in the evenings; bears; moose. Beautiful no matter what time of year.

105. Back home, SE Alaska
Why? Because its my home, its where my family and a majority of my friends live, the place, is a part of me(at least it feels that way) and I miss it greatly.

Whats wrong with where I'm living: My family isn't here, its SW Missouri stronghold of R's, its hot, its humid, snakes, ticks, chiggers, no ocean, no mountains, no jobs(besides chicken plants), and if you can't tell, I really don't like it, it rubs me the wrong way.
