I love where I live now for many reasons. Many people would be surprised at the advantages of living in big ol' boring, flat, rural Nebraska. I do have the fortune of living in a small town with a traditionally liberal University, and a neighborhood populated with Democrats. I could die here and be satisfied with my life. It may turn out that way....

If substantial progress in healthcare delivery is not made however, I will take my medical education to a place where I know I can treat my patients with equal regard. I do not want to die in a country that would treat her people so shabbily as my neighbors and children are treated now.

At the foot, or on the knees, of a huge mountain range, complete with rocks, trees, meadows, and abundant rivers and lakes.

I'd set my house down in the center of a plot of land about 10 square miles, surrounded by hundreds of square miles of national forest.

I'd fence that plot of land, so that nobody got any further than the gate.

I'd make a trip to the nearest town, which would be small, ecumenical, environmentally responsible, and politically independent in nature, once a month for supplies. The biggest building in that town would be the public library.

I'd work from home on my computer to fund my life.

What's wrong with where I'm living? I've got a little space, and I can see mountains from here. Some of the things that are wrong with where I'm living:

The population is anti-intellectual and hard core conservative. The compensation for that, the rural environment, is being destroyed by the rampant growth of parasitic housing developments. While I have more space around me than many, my neighbor 6 acres over is noisy. He maintains his place with a cat that has a back-up alarm; it's always beeping, destroying the peace. He hauled off his old mobile home 4 years ago and built a new house; 2 stories right up next to the fence bordering our properties, so that my feeling of privacy has been violated.

104. Star Valley, Wyoming, because I've already lived there and miss it. My

typical day was driving through this beautiful mountain valley to the Snake River Canyon between Alpine and Jackson Hole, where I worked along the base of the Tetons and in the Jackson valley area. I would see wildlife everyday, like Bald Eagles fishing the Snake River in the mornings and herds of elk in the evenings; bears; moose. Beautiful no matter what time of year.
