:wtf:

Wonkette's snide commentary (not mine):

http://wonkette.com/411246/a-childrens-treasury-of-important-lines-from-sarah-palins-speech-to-hong-kong-money-people

“And we have a special place in our hearts in Alaska for the Pacific Rim… Personally, I’ve always been really interested in the ideas, too, about the land bridge. Ideas that maybe so long ago, had allowed Alaska to be physically connected to this part of our world so many years ago.” Indeed, the land bridge from Alaska to Hong Kong. This is a geological thing she thinks about constantly. Why did Jesus destroy this friendly friendship bridge with the Oriental bankers?

“So for Alaska, which is the air crossroads of the world, to this prosperous dynamic force in the world, Hong Kong, I bring good tidings, wishes for more blessing and vibrant life and even more freedom.” Aww, she came all the way from “the air crossroads of the world” to bring these friendly people many more buckets of freedom!

“Now I know that many of you, maybe you’re hoping to hear me discuss the derivations of the formula for effective rate of protection, followed by a brief discussion of the monetary approach to the balance of payments. If time allows, a quick summary of factor price equalization. Maybe some thoughts on quantitative easing, but that’s for next time. Because I have spent my life closer to Main Street. That’s what I want to talk about is that view from Main Street.” USA! USA!

“You can call me a common sense conservative.” Hey, don’t steal Willow’s title!

“What happened to that Reagan legacy, the Reaganism that worked what happened to that?” Yeah c’mon wtf where is it, the Reagan whatever?? WHERE DID THE REAGAN THING GO? Todd did you flush the Reaganomics down the Porta-John again? Why do you keep doing that Todd!

“Our message, that we thought we were providing a real change, it didn’t take hold. The other ticket’s message of, I think a vague change, it was kind of nebulous, utopian sounding, but it did take hold. Now 10 months later though, a lot of Americans are now asking: ‘More government? Is that the change that we wanted? Oh, I see.’” We’ve got nothing.

7. "Air crossroads of the world" = flyover land. Like, people aren't stopping there. What that has to
do with Hong Kong, I'll never know.

And I'm sorry, but this...

I am that kind of MBA. The kind who prefers accountancy and project management to using complex financial terms (or any business terms) to impress people.

My favorite word is "synergy"...you know how many dopey sheltered mormon dip shits and volvo driving soccer mom MBAs I've wanted to mentally belt for using a word from chemistry to sound smarter when the word "complementary" works just fine???

30. "air crossroads" -- I didn't think flights stopped in Anchorage any more?
When Russia and China didn't allow western carriers to overfly their territories, flights stopped in Anchorage.

But with the extended range aircraft, and the opening up of more direct routes, especially between Europe and Asia, the number of flights stopping to refuel at Anchorage must have dropped quite a bit.

Another DUer pointed this out to me:

http://www.businessinsider.com/sara-palin-just-another-clsa-practical-joke-2009-9

Hong Kong Broker Pulling A "Borat" On Sarah Palin by Vincent Fernando The Business Insider, September 1, 2009)

Hopefully Sarah Palin realizes she's been invited to Hong Kong almost certainly as a practical joke.

CLSA, the Asia-focused broker who invited Mrs. Palin as keynote speaker for an Asian investment conference, is well known for their cheeky takes on investment research.

In the past, they've polled Asian fortune tellers for index targets, hired anime cartoonists to draw Japanese research, and generally love to push the boundaries between entertainment and analysis. They are a real research firm, it's just that they love to sprinkle in some hilarity every now and then as a smart marketing gimmick.

Sarah Palin is this year's big laugh for them. Her invitation as keynote speaker in Hong Kong is so ridiculous that its absurdity can't be accidental.

33. No dressing will make her word salad digestible. A second helping:

Sarah Palin, Hong Kong, CLSA Asia Pacific Markets Conference, Sept. 23, 2009 Speech Excerpts

U.S. DOMESTIC POLICY

On Conservatism:

You can call me a common-sense conservative. My approach to the issues facing my country and the world, issues that we’ll discuss today, are rooted in this common-sense conservatism… Common sense conservatism deals with the reality of the world as it is. Complicated and beautiful, tragic and hopeful, we believe in the rights and the responsibilities and the inherent dignity of the individual.

We don’t believe that human nature is perfectible; we’re suspicious of government efforts to fix problems because often what it’s trying to fix is human nature, and that is impossible. It is what it is. But that doesn’t mean that we’re resigned to, well, any negative destiny. Not at all. I believe in striving for the ideal, but in realistic confines of human nature…

On Liberalism:

The opposite of a common-sense conservative is a liberalism that holds that there is no human problem that government can’t fix if only the right people are put in charge. Unfortunately, history and common sense are not on its side. We don’t trust utopian promises; we deal with human nature as it is.
