"I hate seeing that man's (Obama's) face on TV! He just makes me mad!"
The reason why, lady, is because you hate black people. And you, ma'am, are a racist.

--------------------------

Then she went silent and rang up my order.

1. I don't know, I felt that way about bush. I used to scream at the TV.
That had nothing to do with race.

19. I probably said I hated a lot of things about Bush, including his face and that smirk he wore on it.
I couldn't watch him, I couldn't listen to him. I would have to wait for his speeches to be put up on the net so I could read the transcript. I can imagine that there are some people who feel as strongly about Obama and I don't think you can attribute all of it to racism.

30. Oh, I did...most definitely...
I still do. The sight of his face makes me physically ill. I hate his face, I hate his smirk, I hate everything about him.

Whenever he would appear on TV, I couldn't even LOOK at him, much less listen to him speak.

2. Is everybody who hates Obama a racist? is that a relevant question.
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 03:03 PM by WI_DEM
I hated Bush and hated to see his face on TV as well (stopped watching televised speeches for one thing), does that make me a racist? I don't think we can assume that everybody who dislikes Obama is a racist--not that many aren't.

7. I wonder...but Bush was illegally appointed....but I didn't really
Hate him until 9/11 when they started to "catapult" the propaganda and use the attack as an excuse to shred the Constitution and loot the Treasury. These same people did not worry about deficits or the revocation of various Amendments to the Constitution until Obama got into office. I have heard the belief that Obama would "take care of his own kind," i.e. anyone of color, many times even before he was elected. It was on their minds then.

29. And at the end of those 4 years
the accusation will have no meaning whatsoever.

Used to be calling someone a racist was a good way to silence them, or at least deflect the argument (whether it was a fair attack or not).

Now people are starting to get sick of it. And most people will simply shrug it off, or roll their eyes.

As they should, this is getting ridiculous.

13. If she was to say something about his policies...
and not something based on his "appearance", then I would say that it was not racist.

If she was to say "Oh that damn Obama and his foreign policies", then I would not be bothered.

20. No, but it is terribly hard to seperate such a bowl of turds
The conservative movement attracts bigots across the spectrum. You've got misogamists, plenty of antisemites, racists of all flavors, theocrats, homophobes streaming out of the wood work, classists, culture warriors, and all kinds of douchebags seemingly without number.

Its hard to sort out which specific dehumanizing bigotry these folks are working from at any given time but it is a reasonably safe bet that one or any number of them are in the field of play so I have a hard time feeling bad when they are called on any portion of their coalition of dark age thinking.

Haters hate and these motherfuckers all hate somebody, getting caught up too much on who seems sort of silly to me. Wanting to shit down the necks of the poor isn't much of an upgrade from racist to me but apparently a lot of people think that's okay.

31. People accuse others of things widely considered bad.
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 06:47 PM by burning rain
Racism is about the most officially frowned-upon form of bigotry in the US, so it's a good thing to accuse people of, true or not--hell, even if the accuser doesn't believe it. Classism, plutocracy, open contempt for working folks and especially the poor, are all socially acceptable in America, so accusing people of those things is about as ineffectual as accusing them of liking ketchup.

Can you flesh the story out a bit. I'm trying to figure out why a cashier would suddenly say this.

9. Oh, so you've been talking to my mom?
That could have come from my mother's mouth. To her, black men should be bellhops, porters, newsboys, and shoe-shine boys. Black women should take in laundry. And we are not from the South! She has lived in Wisconsin all of her life.

How did I ever escape this mentality; thank God for public school and friends who had other attitudes!

She was born in 1930 and raised on 1940s Hollywood movies, which she still adores. I don't think she's ever personally known a person who was black or even Latino. So of course the President and First Lady and their kids in the White House is a real disconnect, although she acknowledges that they are a cute family.

Something like, "That bumptious man wearies me with his ubiquity."
