What would actually make Republicans happy:
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 04:36 PM by dave123williams
If Obama was only allowed to be President three fifths of the time.

Sure. It's not about race.

Sure it's not.

(edited for the historically correct ratio :)

11. Learn history
What a dumb comment. Do you even know where the 3/5 number comes from? It was the abolitionists who got it reduced to less than one, and for good reason. The slaveowners wants slaves to count as whole, because that gave them greater representation and more votes (the slaves didn't actually get to vote, the owners did: their vote, plus the votes of the slaves). Reducing the representation to 3/5 was a way of limiting the power of the slave states.

If the slaves were counted as whole votes then there would not have even been a debate over the expansion of slavery. All the new states would have been slave states.

The three-fifths clause is part of Article 1, Section 2 of the original Constitution. As long as it was in force, this provision for a state's representation in the House of Representatives inflated the number of congressmen from slave states.(since none of them actually represented the interests of slaves, considered personal property). The number of congressmen from each state determines the number of electors in the Electoral College, so the extra members of Congress in slave states also affected presidential elections.

It had nothing to do with "votes" and everything to do with population.

"The votes of the slaves"... Are you fucking kidding?

Bigoted idiot.

14. You're picking at one misstated word in his entire post
Just "votes" in the last sentence is wrong, but it's obvious what he means. Everything else is correct....
