Seasonal flu shot may increase H1N1 risk: early data
Last Updated: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 | 5:13 PM

CBC News

Preliminary research suggests the seasonal flu shot may put people at greater risk for getting swine flu, CBC News has learned.

"This is some evidence that has been floated; it hasn't been validated yet, it's very preliminary," cautioned Dr. Don Low, microbiologist in chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

"This is obviously important data to help guide policy decision. How can we best protect people against influenza?"

It's important to validate the information to make sure it's not just a fluke, and that the observation is confirmed elsewhere such as in the Southern Hemisphere, which just completed its seasonal flu season, Low added.

The four Canadian studies involved about 2,000 Canadians in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta, sources told CBC News. Researchers found people who had received the seasonal flu vaccine in the past were more likely to get sick with the H1N1 virus. .........(more)

2. What happens if you get both shots?
I got the flu shot last week, and am planning to get the H1N1 vaccine once it becomes available next month...

3. H1N1 likely won't be available to everyone.
First responders, people in medical community, those under 24, those over 60 and those with compromised immune systems get first dips.

If you are over 25 and under 60 likely you are shit out of luck. The Virginia National Guard required me to get flu shot this weekend so I am in the same boat.

4. I'm 65...
So it looks like I am eligible...

If the Virginia National Guard required you to get the flu shot, wouldn't they also require you to get the H1N1?

Good luck!

5. Maybe but October is my last drill so by the time the Army gets some I'll be gone.
I will be fine, it won't kill many 30yr olds, statistically speaking.

7. Actually it kills more 30 year olds statistically speaking
than the regular flu.

Why the triage list you gave is wrong

It is health care workers, pregnant women and kids first

Followed by adults with compromised systems. Those over 60 with healthy systems are not in the first triage list.

8. I think that's what they're recommending -- getting both, if you can. nt

10. Proof that a one size fits all vaccine policy may
not always be best? It's good to know this, if it's true.
