New UN President: Being Gay Is "Unacceptable"
http://www.bilerico.com/2009/09/new_un_president_being_gay_is_unacceptable.php

The new President of the United Nations, Ali Abdussalam Treki, held a press conference today on a wide range of topics. Treki is from Libya, an Arabic country with a poor track record on LGBT rights.

When Treki was asked about a UN resolution calling for the universal decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide, he declined to support the resolution.

(T)hat matter is very sensitive, very touchy," Treki said. "As a Muslim, I am not in favor of it ... it is not accepted by the majority of countries. My opinion is not in favor of this matter at all. I think it's not really acceptable by our religion, our tradition"

"It is not acceptable in the majority of the world. And there are some countries that allow that, thinking it is a kind of democracy ... I think it is not," he added.

Strangely enough, it was a Congressional Republican who rose to the LGBT community's defense. The ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs committee, Florida's Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, told On Top Magazine, "The anti-gay bigotry spewed by this Qaddafi shill demonstrates once again that the UN has been hijacked by advocates of hate and intolerance."

1. Ros-Lehtinen is sure a strange one.
The usual anti-Castro stuff, but here voting record on other matters is a little schizophrenic.

you can check her voting record here:

It was just a few weeks ago.

17. Maybe she hates the UN even more than she hates gays?
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 06:31 PM by LeftishBrit
some RW-ers do. (In the UK, it tends to be the EU that such people hate.)

Or she may hate all Muslims?

2. Well, as an agnostic, I don't care what he believes (he obviously isn't thinking, despite his claim)
Many traditions are good.

His religion's desire to kill is not.

15. Not so with this subject. A real trekkie told me this once...
"There are no gays on Star Trek because homosexuality will be cured in the 23rd Century." So much for open-minded ideals of universal rights.:wow:

19. I regularly visit the Trek BBS messageboard
The political forum on that site is pretty heavily infested with right-wingers for some weird reason, especially considering that Star Trek supposedly has a more utopian "progressive" vision of the future.

8. What kinder way is there to slow global human-population increase?
Education is often cited as one of the ways, but is education "kind"?

11. The onlyh reason that pos "defended" the LGBT community is because
it gave her the opportunity to lash out at a Muslim/Arab.

13. Substitute "Christian" for "Muslim" and you'd practically have yourself a GOP plank.
So what does Ros-Lehtinen think of her own party's advocates of hate and intolerance?

20. The homophobe is only President of the General Assembly
roughly equivalent to Speaker of the House, but for a one-year term.

The head of the UN is the Secretary General. One of the early Secretaries General, Dag Hammarskjold of Norway, was himself gay.

21. I think this just another facet of the rampant institutionalized Xenophobia in the Middle East.
We have to establish human and civil rights as a foundation for solving all other problems. Because it's the underlying Xenophobia in the Middle East that undermines the solutions and agreements reached. It just has a corrosive effect on any and all progress. So you have to deal with the Xenophobia before you can deal with anything else.

23. A Libyan elected President of the UN!! No wonder MooMar went on and on for two hours
without anybody calling him a liar.

Sometimes I just have to shake my head when I see some of the bullshit coming out of that august body.

Fuck Treki and MooMar and all their bigoted religious fanatic buddies.
