Photos from Honduras battle today - Why isn't this a bigger issue here?
Formally, the US is condemning the Honduran dictatorship, alongside Brazil and the coalition it now heads. This is deep history in the making: Latin America uniting to say Basta! to the return of the military coups that brutalized the continent for decades.

In assisting the legitimately elected Honduran president's restoration, Lula is showing great courage and willingness to do the right thing even when it is risky.

Don't look away! The people are fighting for their freedom!

1. Every cop looks exhausted
One wonders when they'll hit that tipping point, say "aw fuck it" and join the rest of the people.

The right wing coup needs to try to find a way to save face and get the hell out of Dodge. It should be clear to them that unless they kill most of their fellow citizens, it's just not going to work.

18. Bored, not exhausted. And a dozen kids doesn't equal a protest.

Oh and yes, they are exhausted... more than the troops, who actually do look bored.

captain hilts, i suspect you have it right when you say "Powerful folks get in a fight"

we have no idea who is right or wrong here, many of the honduran displaced in the new orleans area have been displaced for decades and have their own ideas but based on what current info? we don't know?

at some point i think we have to be willing to accept that the folks in latin america know more and can decide better about where to go with this...than we can...i have to believe they'll make better decisions than ronald fucking reagan

But when you talk about destruction

23. Why this isn't a bigger issue here--it has nothing to do with
Michael Jackson (or any other celebrities). I just listened to the top-of the hour newscast and there was nothing about Honduras, but there was a lot about a new Michael Jackson album that's coming out soon.

24. Heartbreaking photos.
As I view them, I feel like a rubbernecker at the scene of a gruesome event. Certainly the U.S. has no role to play here. This revolution belongs to the people of Honduras.

But still, we need to be aware of the events in the world around us. So now I know. And my heart breaks.

28. I find this particular issue to be very confusing
On the one hand there is apparently a law in Honduras preventing presidents from running for a third term or conducting any kind of referendum to change the constitution limiting the president to two terms.

On the other hand while on the surface it looks as if this provision is meant to prevent "strong men" from consolidating power, underneath it seems as if it is a way for the elites to prevent a populist movement from gaining a foothold on power, and it certainly seems anti-democratic to hold Hondurans to this standard in perpetuity and destroy their mechanism for changing it if they feel it is necessary.

I'm wondering what other DUers think

30. The right wing in Honduras accused the president of attempting
to run for a second term because he was too liberal for them. He did nothing of the sort. He was promoting a national poll, perfectly legal, to see if the nation was interested in writing a new constitution.

The thugs that took him out of power are just that and nearly all of Latin America as well as the UN and the EU has closed ranks against them.

Their PR strongly resembles the one used by our own right wing because it is in part funded by them.

34. The right wing? You've been misinformed
Zelaya and Micheletti belong to the *same* party. The referendum was deemed illegal by both the Honduran congress (also from the same party Zelaya and Micheletti belong to) and the Honduran supreme court. This entire mess has been made by that one party.

Now elections need to happen, so both Zelaya and Micheletti leave and (hopefully) their party is voted out of office.

33. Thanks for the info
I have to admit when I read about the constitutional provision against attempting to run for a second term I initially thought that the law itself was unjust. How can you write a law that says the law itself is unchangeable?
