I have to tell you what I did with the computer I won
Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 06:53 PM by shraby
from DU..I sold it and used the money to buy bicycles for the three little Asian girls who live next door. They are ages 3,8 and 10..never had bikes or toys of any sort to speak of (the youngest 3 of 9 children). Two other girls on the block have bikes and would come to play and then leave on their bikes and the ones we got the bikes for could do nothing but watch them go..on their bikes.
The three year old couldn't master the trick to making the pedal come back up to be able to push it down so she could keep going, so we went back to the store and got her a 3 wheeler which she was able to make go. Today she came out and got on the 2 wheeler and away she went! They're good neighbors, and we've never had a problem with any of the kids and figured they deserved the bikes, and besides that, it makes us grin to see them riding. w00t!

edited to be pc.

helmets and bells...funny story about the bells. We took them to the store to pick out the bikes they wanted, and then over to the bells..only 2 left..3 kids. We called the saleslady and she checked the stock..no more bells. I took a horn off the rack and handed it to the 3 year old who had one of the bells in her hand, she heard the horn honk, handed the bell to her sister and took the horn. Problem solved with grins all around.

21. I have been wondering about this...
....because I have a lot of Asian friends. So, I started asking if they were offended by the term "Oriental." From most, I got puzzled looks and they wondered why I was asking. I told them that I had read that the use of the term "Oriental" was not the right thing to do. They assured me they had no problem with it.

I am not sure where this is coming from. Maybe those who are not native to an Asian country but of Asian descent? The persons I spoke with for the vast majority had been born overseas.

Just curious...where are you getting this from that it is not proper.

TIA....:hi:

So, this is my experience. I haven't asked any of the other Asians I know if they are offended by the term Oriental. My community has a lot of Vietnamese, and Thai immigrants that we know through eating at their restaurants, I suppose I should get their input.

38. I am in SoCal....
...and the persons I asked primarily were native Vietnamese ~~ to a one, they appeared puzzled by my question. In fact, one of them is the wife of an atty friend of mine and she was born in VN, has a HUGE group of VN friends and told me she had never heard this. She was not offended at all.

I do try to be PC correct and not offend ~~ it is really hard some times. So that is why I asked about this "Oriental" issue.

BTW: The persons I have spoken to range all over the place in age, education, careers, length of time in the US, etc. All were female but one person.

Oh, well ~~ I have not heard that anyone is offended by "Asian" ~~ so I will just switch and use that just to make sure I do not offend.

51. My Friend came here when she was just a 9 Y.O.
Our Best Friend got his parents to adopt her, at the time she came here as an orphan. She is in her 40's now. She got to go back home ('93) and got reintroduced to her biological mother. Weird situation the US created back in the day. My friend hates the smell of burning sage, says it reminds her of burning flesh

Yes, trying not to offend other cultures can be a daunting task. However, when someone asks you not to refer to them by a certain term, I respect their request.

84. interesting question...
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 05:42 PM by AsahinaKimi
I often go to a chat room on meebo.com. The chat room, though called "Canada Chat lounge" also has a web page (http://chat567.com) on the internet seen by those in mainland China, and many Chinese students come to learn English there. Many ask me if I am Chinese, and I always tell them, no I am an American born Asian.

They find this very confusing..So I have to explain that there are many people whose ancestors came from Asia that live around world. I explain that my father came from Osaka Japan, while my mother who was born in New York City is half Korean and half Japanese.

That also is confusing because how can you be from Asia and the United States at the same time? So I tell that in the USA there are many people of different cultures and race..and that in the USA we might call ourselves Japanese, or Filipino, or Chinese, or Taiwanese or Korean, or Vietnamese, or Cambodian, or Thai, or whatever however, we are all essentially from Asia. In the USA, since we are so multicultural, that the use of the word Asian seems to cover all of those people who have come from that region of the planet. Not only that but there are those who are newly immigrants and those who have had generations of families living in the United States of America.

Everybody has the right to be called what is most fitting for them, and that's a very simple way of handling it. Good on you for asking them!

I have Indian friends who feel the same way about "Native American"---they refer to themselves as Indian, and that is why I use the term.

Thank you your sensitivity in asking them. It's an individual thing.

Really I think my husband prefers Filipino, and my friends prefer Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean, Thai, etc. but they realize that some people can't always tell. I've gotten pretty good at it over the years but I'm sometimes mistaken so I say Asian unless I know for sure.

82. Maybe it's because Filipinos aren't Oriental
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 05:19 PM by kristopher
Oriental refers primarily to East Asia (China, Korea Japan). The Filipinos are still pretty touchy as a result of the brutal Japanese occupation they had to endure and if I were from there, I'd reject the term Oriental also.

ETA: I don't even think Okinawa would be considered part of the Orient. Even though it is still under Japanese control, it's roots are in a local kingship that has no historic cultural tie to Japan.

I've a very close relationship with the Orient going back decades and it isn't possible to count the number of friends and family of Asian descent. This canard that "Oriental" is offensive has no basis in my experience. Maybe you should consider the possiblity that you are spreading an urban myth,

85. Definitely not an urban myth. I can name 30+ people off the top of my head from
several different Asian countries (some born here, others born outside the US) who I know for a fact bristle at the term "Oriental". Even at my office, several of my friends (one Japanese, one Filipino, one Vietnamese, one Chinese, one Korean/Chinese, and one Taiwanese) had to have a talk with one of our coworkers because she insisted on using the term but claimed to be very culturally sensitive.

So no, it is not an urban myth.

Urban myths often are perpetuated with exactly the kind of testimonials you are presenting. There is no reasoned basis for objecting to the word.

98. No, urban myths are perpetuated by people who say "well my mother's best friend's cousin
swears she knows someone who..." But personally knowing literally dozens of people who have objected to being called something is not an urban myth. It's reality. I'm not sure your experience is as broad as you're convinced it is if you haven't seen it. Perhaps some of the people you know aren't offended by it, but perhaps some are offended and are just too polite to say so (especially if they've heard you use the term). What I know for sure is that it's common among my friends, family and associates to prefer the term "Asian" over "Oriental". I was there when several of my coworkers called another coworker out for repeatedly using the term "Oriental". There is an Asian person on this very thread, responding to my previous post, saying that she finds it offensive. What more do you need to hear?

And as far as there being "no reasoned basis for objecting to the word," who are you to decide how people should feel about a label that was given to them by outsiders? Do you decide for everyone how they should feel about labels they didn't choose for themselves, or just Asians?

99. What is the basis?
Edited on Fri Sep-25-09 07:06 AM by kristopher
To me, this is a question related to linguistics. What you'll find is that there is almost always a discernable pattern to what happens when words change meanings, and that pattern is rooted in some tangible thing. There is no root basis for the objection to the word Oriental if it is applied to peoples of east Asia, however there is a basis if it is *misapplied* to peoples who have previously been victims of Japanese colonialism. That is, as I stated elsewhere, no different than misapplying the term Anglo to a French person by someone that thinks Anglo=White. If someone calls a French person an Anglo the French person is probably going to take offense.

And if a couple of busybodies who are as ignorant as the person misusing Anglo observe the exchange they are liable to draw some seriously wrong conclusions about what is happening.

And just to go to the same place you decided to, I suppose I should accuse you of being deceitful when you speak of all those people you pretend to know who actually were offended. There is no basis for claiming Oriental is a racist term. That is a crock perpetuated by fruitcakes.

I can be just as ignorant as you.

ETA: For a taboo word, it is used an awful lot by those supposedly offended.

101. A possibility
Edited on Fri Sep-25-09 07:39 AM by kristopher
I could still edit my other post but I'll let it stand so this one makes more sense.

I've been thinking more about our disagreement and I think I understand the origin of our different perspectives.

Far from overstating my association with Japan I think I have failed to properly convey the importance of it; primarily because I didn't appreciate the significance. I first went there 32 years ago; I married there, I went to college there, I raised my daughters there, I buried their mother there, and I remarried there.

That exposure, of course, dwarfs the number of people I've met that have immigrated here.

It is inconceivable to me that any of the Japanese I've shared my life with, gone to school with, played music with, or engaged in any substantial dialog with, that any of those people would take the slightest offense at being referred to as an Oriental.

I've erred in overlaying that experience on people who've made their lives here that happen to have a phenotype similar to those Japanese but who have had to endure the ignorance and bigotry of Americans towards people who aren't WASPs.

The Japanese I knew had an ethnic identity reinforced by the entire culture surrounding them and a consequent sense of intense pride in being part of the group. In contrast, here there is often a sense of otherness related to having an Asian ethnic identity (or so I understand from my daughters) that can be hard to deal with. The term Oriental is associated closely with the perception of Asia as an exotic, alien place with exotic, alien people; so it is reasonable that it has a much stronger sense of "otherness" associated with it here.

You are correct and I *was* wrong.

I'm glad I read this one. And while I never went as far as to infer you were a fruitcake or completely making up your relationships to prove your point, I did underestimate your experience and I am sorry about that.

I can see where you are coming from if your experience comes from inside Japanese culture *in* Japan. My friends and family all live here now so they are exposed to the bigotry of the American experience. Even when it's not Bigotry with a capital B, there is still a lot of ignorance.

I remember the first time my mother met my husband's family 20 years ago, one of the first things she said to them was "I LOVE Chinese food!" I was completely mortified. My (then, future) sister-in-law told me later that it happens all the time when white people are trying to be kind but are still all too aware of the divide between them. I didn't realize that because I always felt so comfortable around Asian people. I know it's a stereotype but it's one that happened to be true in my case–I was an honor student and the people who naturally became my friends were the other honor students, many of whom were Asian. I suppose that my being an outcast in general gave me a certain "otherness" that my Asian friends had by virtue of their appearance, and that gave us another reason to bond.

That didn't change in college or after college. At my last job before becoming a freelancer, easily a third of my department at any given time was Asian, and we enjoyed many of the same things. So many of us became friends outside of work as well. I guess I can see where it might seem made up that my circle of friends sounds like a parade of Asian nations, but it's true. I remember one Sunday morning trucking down to Chinatown for dim sum and it just happened that everyone we called was able to meet us that morning. So we ended up with a huge table of people and were laughing at all the ethnic representations at the table: Filipino, Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese and Greek. I was alternately the "token white" and the "honorary Asian".

Anyway, yes, I think you're right that the term takes on a somewhat negative (if unintentional) "otherness" here in America that it doesn't have outside the US (perhaps in Japan especially). And that's why it becomes offensive to many people who live here now or were born here. There are other labels like that in other cultures, where the degree of discomfort at their use depends on who's saying them and the context.

24. Why isn't oriental acceptable? That's news to me. All it means is
"from the east" like occidental means "from the west". I personally don't see the difference between that and calling everyone from the east (of Europe of course) Asian.

28. Becuase people from the East find it insulting
due to the history of how it was used over the last 150 years. It has some racist overtones to it.

<------- keep with language as a writer. Hell, right now doing lots of research onto southern regionalisms, y'all.

What a dear man he was... once he got past the racism he was even better. If'n he c'n do it, anyone might could!

96. Can you support that?
I don't believe it is true. There is no more racism in Oriental than there is Asian. My guess is that the objections are rooted in misapplication similar to what would occur if you were to call a person from France an Anglo because they may share some physical characteristics associated with "white" people. If the speaker equates "Anglo" with "white" and then applies Anglo to all whites, there are going to be people who take offense.

Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 06:21 PM by masuki bance
"Oriental" is Eurocentric, referring to things east of Europe.

Oriental is used to refer to objects, material possessions, rugs, teas etc..

Asian is used to refer to people, culture, food, etc..

See Edward Said-

31. They don't travel far..too young and we're on a cul-de-sac
so they can ride to their hearts content..they put them in their garage when they are through riding. What made me think of it was the tires were low so Mr. Shraby put air in all tires, oiled what needed oiled so they could ride them easier..some of the tires had virtually no air..we didn't check them when they got them a month or so ago..guess we should have.

with their father before we did anything to make sure it would be okay..actually we were going to give him the money to buy them and just let the kids think Dad came through...but he wasn't hearing that..he wanted the kids to know we bought them. He popped the kids in his rig and we went in ours and met them at the store.

for me at all. Not everyone is up on what's PC. As Heidi Klum says,"One day you're in, the next you're out." We've all screwed up our PC language at times and generational issues color that as well.
