Poll question: Have you or anyone you know contracted H1N1?
A friend of mine has three sons who had it and right now my husband is suffering from it. I'm curious at how widespread this is getting.

2. Probably. Not as many as I know who have gotten the equally-deadly regular flu, though.

4. I actually thought I might have it, but then I read Sanjay Gupta's account of his
bout with it while he was in Afghanistan. :scared: Man, there's no question when you get it, and I desperately hope I don't.

5. no it's all FOAF
from a teacher friend -- "a bunch of our kids have swine flu" and so forth (all the kids recovered so you can see swine flu had its fun in new orleans some months ago now in the early stages, it's old hat now)

as far as how widespread you must know that at this point it is worldwide and found even in australia, china, etc. -- there is nothing to be gained by any quarantine

it is unpleasant sure but it sure ain't lived up to all the hoopla

13. My sister's family currently has it and it's the worst flu they've ever had
It involves digestive upset, nausea, vomiting at times, high fevers (over 102), pain everywhere that doesn't go away with Advil or Tylenol, stuffy nose, sore throat, intense headache, total weakness, AND difficulty breathing.

Good that you are feeling better,

I was on ground zero when it broke in Mexico City and as they closed down the city... I had to call parents and explain to them the logic of that...

Thank you, again.

As nadin knows, my best friend, a healthy 57 year-old, got the flu and before they could diagnose it was H1N1 it had become that viral pneumonia that causes severe meltdown in the lungs very quickly. He was under a ventilator for 3 weeks in ICU and is just now recovering in a physical rehabilitation center. His prognosis is good but one cannot minimize the potential damage this flu can cause.

I never knew it could strike such a healthy person so hard. We almost lost him a couple of times and it was a Dr. House moment when he started to come out of it just when all hope was almost gone. Damn, 3 weeks is a long time to be in a drug-induced coma. It has taken him about 2 weeks to get to where he can stand up and talk. He also had kidney problems develop during the siege and some blood sugar concerns. All is slowly coming back to normal. A month later.

My wife also had a co-worker that was severely stricken earlier in the summer and then my wife caught it. My wife went right to bed, consulted her doctor and was well within 5 days. If you get the sypmtoms, don't try to tough it out and go to work. Stay home. And by all means get any vaccines that become available. Almost everyone that has one of the bad cases of it, I have heard describe it as the sickest they have ever felt. My wife said that. My best friend said that. Sanjay Gupta said that. I don't take those comments lightly.

Just my dos centavos,

robdogbucky

22. Yep, have it now
going through it without a lot of pain; the fever and chills are the worst. For me, the bronchial part is the toughest - as I put in another post - and making sure that I don't get pneumonia.

If anyone else has it or their loved ones do, take care and good health wishes are coming your way. :grouphug:

24. My son and I had it.
My son had it first. His bout was pretty mild compared to mine, which threw me for a loop.

I'm still fighting the after effects of a very bad, hacking cough.

I had a mother of a flu in the early 90s where it knocked me out completely. Ended up with pneumonia and a very grossly, oozy, left eye infection. The eye infection was so bad that to this day my eye is not the same. I never, ever, want that kind of flu again; which is why I always get a flu shot. Compared to that flu, this one wasn't so bad.

I finally got my flu shot this week, and was told to come back in October for the H1N1 shot.

To compound matters was the inability to have enough pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) in the house to dose multiple family members.

25. Yup
A couple of co-workers (nurses) and several patients. In our area we expect it to be widespread but fairly mild, except in high risk populations (I work in transplant, which is a very high risk population)

(On another note, about 20 of us were just exposed to pertussis. We got a vaccination booster and a course of prophylatic antibiotics. **sigh**)

Edited on Wed Sep-23-09 10:52 PM by Hansel
His 4 year old son spent 4 days in the hospital with it. His wife and 5 year old daughter also had it. Both were very sick but did not end up in the hospital. He did not get it. Nor I or my daughter even though he was working on our house at the time.

Nearly 1/2 of the people I work with got it and the place had to be fumigated. The people originally from foreign countries seemed to get much sicker than those born here did. I wasn't in the office during this time, but my daughter had to stop in to run an errand for me and again, she did not get sick.

No one in my office over 50 got sick. There must have been a flu a few decades ago that provided some immunity.

30. Yes. A friend and her son (probably) had it.
Severe flu-type symptoms for both of them, although they were never formally tested.

He was sick for 3 weeks and is still not back to normal. She has been sick for a week and a half now, but seems to be slowly on the road to recovery. She said she was quite ill for about 4-5 days with a high fever etc.

34. Yes, the daughter of a co-worker.
And the daughter of another one has come down with some sort of flu tonight, it seems. I'm in East Tennessee. I work at a newspaper, and I'm afraid we're about to find out just how few people we can have in the newsroom and still get out a paper.

Trouble is, it scared a lot of parents and the absenteeism rate has skyrocketed to 20 percent or so.
