WHY Do We Let RACISM Thrive on CNN? It's TIME For LOU DOBBS TO GO.

For OpEdNews: Posted by Joan Brunwasser - Writer

CNN News anchor Lou Dobbs is using his position to promote rightwing hate movements, including the clearly discredited "birther" movement which spreads destructive lies about President Barack Obama's citizenship. CNN president Jonathan Klein emailed staffers at "Lou Dobbs Tonight" informing them that the story had been thoroughly debunked. And yet Dobbs continues to highlight voices questioning the validity of the president's birth certificate on his program. Why is Klein accepting this behavior?

For years, Lou Dobbs has used his platform on CNN to spread myths and misinformation about Latinos and immigrants. Our friends at Presente.org, working hard to get Dobbs off the air, say he is the "most dangerous man for Latinos in America."

Just how dangerous is Dobbs? Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center says: "The rise in hate crimes against Latinos coincides almost exactly with the time Dobbs has been propagating false conspiracy theories about Latinos on the air. He's not urging people to go hurt and kill - but that is the effect of what he does."

Dobbs is helping fuel the rising tide of hatred and extremism against minorities in this country. CNN would fire an anchor that used network resources to suggest the moon landing was a hoax. Why is the fictional "birther" claim any different? And, in fact, it's more dangerous.

3. LOL! Ya right, keep still.
in this clip from the Media Matters website, Lou Dobbs defends the "7,000 leprosy cases in the last three years" statement made on his show. Leslie Stahl called him on it during a "60 Minutes" interview, during which Dobbs states "Well, I can tell you this. If we reported it, it's a fact."

It's not.

The Center for Disease Control has reported 7,000 cases of leprosy have been discovered in the last *thirty years*, not three years. In fact, the leprosy rate in the United States is on a steady decline.

But Dobbs was never one to let the facts get in the way of a good smear...

2. I recall when Lou Dobbs was caught purchasing a racist, stereotype box of ' Obama Waffles '
at the 2008 Values Voter Summit weekend he attended.

<>

"At the Values Voter Summit this weekend, vendors sold an item called “Obama Waffles” featuring a racist cartoon of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) on the box front — with “popping eyes and big, thick lips” — and another image of him wearing an Arab-like headdress on its top flap. Its creators, Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, said it was meant as “political satire,” and sold the box for $10 from a booth at the Family Research Council event. CNN’s Lou Dobbs stopped by the booth and exclaimed, “My wife will love this!” A photo shows Dobbs with a box of the mix in his hand"
