Clueless racists shouldn't move to New Mexico
TAOS — Larry Whitten said a woman recently walked into his hotel wanting to speak with him. "She was one of these mountain people that live around here," Whitten said, "one of these potheads who escaped society."
Whitten owns and operates the Whitten Inn in Taos, and, for the last month, protesters have stood outside holding signs and shouting "Boycott! Boycott!" from the sidewalk at anyone who heads toward the hotel's front doors.
The "mountain" woman had talked with the protesters and wanted to hear Whitten's side of the story.
The controversy began after Whitten fired several hotel workers and told some to use Anglo versions of their Spanish first names like Martín and Marcos (they were instructed to go by Martin, without the accent, and Mark instead). Whitten also told employees they couldn't speak Spanish, at least when they're around him.
"This mountain lady who wanted to hear the truth, she asks me, 'When you told Martín his name was gonna change, did you ask him how he felt about that?' " Whitten said.

Many "Hispanic" families have been in New Mexico for 500 years, before a single word of English had even been spoken on this continent.
Hope he finds somebody to come in and turn around his "distressed" hotel business.

4. There's a way to bypass that on a one-time basis, but you do
have to watch an ad for the paper. It's not really worth it. The story just shows what a moron the hotel owner is.

8. Yah...there's an answer...
A moronic answer, of course, but an answer...

Doesn't really seem in keeping with the DU concept, now, does it?

3. The guy tries to change people's fucking names and enforce some
English only rule in a place that - as you pointed out - has been Hispanic since the 1500s (before the Plymouth or Jamestown colonies)

Great business model. Remind me to invest some money with the guy. What's his next venture? A homophobic gift shop in the Castro?

Que estupidez.

5. What part of "New MEXICO" does he not understand
I had a similar experience with one of the local idiots around here who was going to move out of CA because "there are too many Mexicans here".

When I asked where he planned to go and he responded "El Paso Texas", I could barely keep a straight face.

7. That's funny. I have a moronic brother-in-law
who's a stupid racist. He's not happy here, and keeps talking about moving to Mexico to get away from all the blacks, hispanics, and asians who live here. I told him that the people down there speak Spanish and that he wouldn't get along all that well unless he did, too. He seemed surprised to hear that, and said, "I'll only talk to people who speak English."

I explained further that he'd have a very difficult time finding a job there. "I'll work for some of the Americans down there," he retorted. I explained that many of them moved down there so they could hire people for peon wages and have domestic servants.

"OK," he said. "Maybe I'll move to Costa Rica. It's cheap to live down there." He was very surprised to learn that Spanish is spoken there, as well.

I fear he's not going to find his place anywhere...

15. I wish I could. If he'd go, I'd buy him a one-way ticket and tell
him that once he got all set-up over there, he could send for his family. We'd never hear from him again, and that would be a great thing. Don't even get me started on this loser.

27. I just read that the district I'm staying in here in East San Jose
is the most Hispanic one in California. Maybe Zoe is just bragging but it's not hard to believe because you hear Spanish everywhere and yesterday my Mom got a replacement library card without even knowing the right numbers. I'm loving it!

31. You're in SJ?!
I thought you were up in the Sunset, based on our earlier conversation about neighborhood groceries. Well, come to find out, I'm in an extended-stay hotel in north SJ. No groceries, but it is near work and light rail, and they give me free breakfast.

:hi:

12. New Mexico's State Constitution . . .
states that New Mexico is a bilingual state. "English Only" would be deemed unconstitutional according to our Constitution. My Hispanic ancestors came to New Mexico as early as 1598, all speaking Spanish. Now if Mexico had built that wall or fence the U.S. is talking about on their border in 1846, then we'd all still be speaking Spanish here still. ;-)

17. I live in NM and find this absolutely hilarious
Back in Boston, people asked me what kind of visa I needed to move to NM. Others asked me how long it would take me to learn Spanish so I could get a job. Ignorance about this state is massive and spills over to some of the folks who move here for the atmosphere, not realizing that atmosphere is largely created by brown folks who speak languages other than English.

Some idiots need a good education and some idiots will only be able to get it the hard way, accompanied by a swift kick to the wallet.

26. In 1598, "Colorado" was a part of Spain, as well.
In Colorado it was harder to establish settlements because of raiding Indian tribes until after 1848. While Spain was really at the end of her reach in this region, it was still Spain. And then was Mexico. Colorado has many native Spanish speakers, especially in the San Luis Valley whose families have been here for generations. One of our California imported state senators, the dimwitted, but very Phyllis Schlaffley, Eagle Forum supporting, Dave Schultheis, introduced an "English only" bill a year or so ago. Clueless. It went nowhere, very fast. :eyes:

21. He 'insists" That workers show up 10 minutes early for their shift?
Does he pay them for this time, or are they expected to just volunteer there free time so he can line his own pocket?

10 minutes of unpaid time, for someone who works five days a week, comes out to 50 minutes. That has got to be illegal.
