Mount Vernon City Council Rejects "Glenn Beck Day"

September 24, 2009 4:04 pm ET by Oliver Willis

The city council for Mount Vernon, Washington was not nearly as wild about the idea of "Glenn Beck Day" as the mayor:

On Wednesday night, the City Council of this town of 32,000 distanced itself from Mayor Bud Norris, who plans to give the keys to the city to talk-show personality Glenn Beck on Saturday.

The seven-member council unanimously passed a resolution proposed by member Dale Ragan that stated, "Mount Vernon City Council is in no way sponsoring the Mayor's event on September 26, 2009 and is not connected to the Glenn Beck event in any manner."

The resolution came after two dozen people who had signed up for the public-comment part of the session spoke in often emotional language to oppose honoring the controversial talk-show host.

Beck, who just made the cover of Time magazine, was in the news recently for labeling President Obama a "racist," a statement that brought a boycott of dozens of advertisers from his Fox TV show. He is recognized as a polarizing figure.

Hats off to Mount Vernon.

Edit to add: You might want to think about getting a new mayor. :eyes:

9. This warms my heart
I happen to have to be passing thru on the highway Sat., on my way up to visit my family in Bellingham (who's mayor offered the key to Jon Stewart) and am dreading being within such a close range to that scum ó the earth.

I'm trying to think of some quick, catchy phrase I can stick in my window for support on my drive up, want to be part of the protest in some way!

It's a symbolic victory that the council distanced itself.

12. The Council only voted to distance itself from the Mayor's decision--Beck still gets key--
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 04:27 PM by Mrs. Overall
Article posted today on Seattle's KOMO News website:

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- With just days left until Glenn Beck is to be awarded the key to the city on what the mayor has coined "Glenn Beck Day," desperate opponents of the event turned to the city council on Wednesday for a Hail Mary.

But the Mount Vernon City Council, in turn, voted to distance itself from Mayor Bud Norris' decision.

Dozens attended the city council meeting Wednesday night to reason, argue and plead with council members to overrule the mayor's decision to honor the conservative talk show host.

Even in the face of strong and emotional opposition, the mayor has stood firm in his resolve to honor the city's native son.

There is not enough time left for the city council to stop Beck from receiving the key to city on Saturday; however, the council members cast a symbolic vote on Wednesday night and voted unanimously to distance itself from the mayor's decision.

More than 700 people have bought $25 tickets to see Beck in person this weekend. Norris initially said only one person from the media would be allowed inside. But on Wednesday, he changed that number to five.

Is that he is actually going to show up! The man is a paranoid idiot, and since the west side of Washington state is "blue", I would think he would be scared to death to show his face over there.

16. Yes, indeed.
It just seemed like maybe some people on the thread thought that Beck was no longer going to receive the key.

I wished they had acted just a bit sooner so that they could have stopped it--Mt. Vernon businesses will suffer.

At least they can say they are smarter than the Mayor. Mayor Bud Norris might have a campaign re-election issue on his hands next election.

33. I am troubled by Obama's racial attitudes
To be fair, everyone in life lies sometimes. It is troubling that Obama did attend a church for 20 years that had a preacher that spoke of hateful things about white people. That church also heavily emphasized black (African-American) mission statements. I am also troubled that President Obama immediately sided with his black friend, Professor Gates, and said the police "acted stupidly", after admitting that he didn't have all the facts. There is a way for us to be post racial and color blind. I'm not convinced that President Obama is post racial. I am also troubled by how we can still use hyphenated terms like Irish-American, and African-American, and be post racial. For our nation to get past our ugly history of racism and slavery, we need to stop using hyphens, and just call ourselves Americans. Just my 2 cents.

How many racist white presidents have we had in the past? I guarantee you reagan and both bushes were racists.

I understand it's scary, but one guy is not gonna turn America inside out, blacks into the ruling class, and whites into the underclass that populates ghettoes and prisons.

If Obama spent every single day of his presidency hacking away at the racism deeply embedded in all the institutions and most of the people in this country, let's face it. He would barely make a dent.

I agree that a huge problem with our country is that we have so many cultures, and so many people that do not accept other cultures as their own. If people thought welfare went towards helping their fellow countrymen and not "those people", we would have much more liberal policies in the country.

It would be easier if we were all one culture. Far easier. But people aren't gonna change their ways any more than other people are gonna stop hating them.

What if you were a minority, and were asked to give up the foods you like for some other culture's cuisine, to stop listening to the music you like and listen to whatever everybody else does, and to turn a blind eye towards your ancestry? It's a difficult thing to do. We certainly know that a segment of the population values their "values" over just about any other concern, and never stops bitching about it.

Don't forget that 100 years ago people were saying these things about the Irish, or the Germans, or the Italians. These things take a whole lot of time. People just don't appreciate it. Our culture is homogenizing though, with the help of the mass media. Slowly but surely. It'll be better in 50 years, and then more in another 50, provided we don't go through a civil war.
