At UN, Venezuela's Chavez smells hope, not sulfur

UNITED NATIONS — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has told the U.N. General Assembly he "smells hope" instead of sulfur, a reference to his branding of former U.S. President George W. Bush "the devil" while addressing the world body three years ago.

"It doesn't smell of sulfur. It's gone," Chavez said Thursday.

In another reference to Bush, he said "please don't anybody throw a shoe at me" and joked that Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, a close ally, had been preparing to do just that.

Chavez had not spoken at the U.N. since he called Bush "the devil" several times in 2006.

This time, he said it was "a great pleasure to be back after several years."
