It's hard to imagine there really are people dumb enough to believe anything Bachmann says, but they are out there (as Bill Sparkman discovered all too well): http://thinkprogress.org/2009/06/17/bachmann-census-lawbreaker/

1. because the bible told her so?
wow, I was just looking up your second use of the word (censure) to see if it was used correctly - but got side-tracked and I think I found out why Bachmann is whacked out about this!
"Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Take a census of all the people of Israel—from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north—and bring me a report so I may know how many there are.”

But Joab replied, “May the LORD increase the number of his people a hundred times over! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this? Are they not all your servants? Why must you cause Israel to sin?”

But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab traveled throughout all Israel to count the people. Then he returned to Jerusalem and reported the number of people to David. There were 1,100,000 warriors in all Israel who could handle a sword, and 470,000 in Judah. But Joab did not include the tribes of Levi and Benjamin in the census because he was so distressed at what the king had made him do.

God was very displeased with the census, and he punished Israel for it. Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt for doing this foolish thing.”

3. thanks Brent
but look at the "light bulb moment" that popped up due to your typo! I think I stumbled onto something, do you? Bachmann is a Dominionist Evangelical prayer warrior. The bible verses from the site I linked may explain her paranoia IMO.

6. Yet Jesus Christ's parents complied with Caesar Augustus's census
according to the Bible. If they hadn't, he wouldn't have been born in Bethlehem as he was supposed to be according to prophecy. It's a good thing for Christians that THEY didn't duck the census takers, isn't it? It would have completely screwed up God's plan.

4. but but but ... the Census is *required* by the Constitution!

Surely she's not suggesting good citizens should oppose the Constitution? That would be subversion!

5. What would Jefferson say to the census...
The census has moved way beyond what was originally intended...

Simply give them how many people in your household and tell them to move on.

7. Let's offer a resolution allowing congressional districts to opt-out of the census.
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 06:49 PM by Ian David
We'll let each Congressman decide for their own districts.
