Gen. McChrystal Surprised by Enemy Strength in Afghanistan
Surprise, surprise.

Gen. McChrystal Surprised by Enemy Strength in Afghanistan

Friday , September 25, 2009

AP

KABUL —
The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan says he was surprised by the strength of the enemy when he arrived this summer.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, in an interview to be aired Sunday on "60 Minutes" on CBS, says that in some areas of the country, the "geographic spread of violence is a little more" than he expected.

Today, military officials said five more U.S. troops have died in attacks in southern Afghanistan.

The rising death toll comes as the Obama administration considers whether to add more troops to the total that's already been growing by 21,000.

Most of the additional troops have been sent to the south, where they've been targeted by roadside bombs and ambushes as they try to take back areas controlled by the Taliban.

The U.S. is on track to have 68,000 troops in Afghanistan by the end of the year. The Pentagon says McChrystal is asking for as many as 40,000 more. ... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,555620,00.html

2. In 1968 we had over 500,000 troops in Vietnam, a country half the size of Afghanistan.
He can ask for 40,000 more and then another 40,000 and then another 40,000 and it will not work. It did not work in Vietnam and it will not work in Afghanistan.

Arm, supply and support the Afghanis and if they really want to keep their own country from the Taliban then they will prove to be the fighters they have historically shown themselves to be against foreign invaders.

8. I strongly suspect...

that most Afghanis would prefer to deal with domestic assholes than have foreigners over-running their country.

Our puppet troops have had such a sterling record, ARVIN for example.

10. "fighters they have historically shown themselves to be against foreign invaders"

Right! Because Afghanistan has only endured foreign rule 2250 years out of the last 2300.

Can we please put to rest the "where empires go to die" propaganda.

Afghans didn't drive out the Greeks. The Persians did.
Afghans didn't drive out the Persians. The Arabs did.
Afghans didn't drive out the Arabs. The Mongols did.
Afghans didn't drive out the Mongols & Indians. The British did.

Afghans did drive out the Brits. But with lots of assistance from the Russians.

Afghan fighters didn't drive out the Soviets. Their stupid Afghan allies made them throw up their hands in disgust.

12. If they want their country let them take it themselves.
Does the Taliban outnumber Afghanis? Is the Taliban more motivated to take Afghanistan than its own people are to keep their own country? Does the Taliban have someone or country that can arm and support them better than we can do with the Afghanis?

It's their country. Let them do the fighting.

6. I heard earlier reports that we were having up to 9 hour firefights and that the
enemy was fighting like Marines would. They said they were much tougher than the Iraqi battles.
