Can Eliot Spitzer make a come back?
I'm watching Real Time With Bill Maher. Spitzer is smart and eloquent. (I can't believe he was such a dick to let his penis ruin his political career.) I think he is a necessary voice in these trouble times. David Vitter was able to overcome his hooker-gate why can't Spitzer? Has enough time passed or will it always haunt him and discredit anything he says?

1. I'd love to see him return...
He is super-intelligent and tough.

Time will tell...

2. He's a smart guy and I've always admired him...
I was really disappointed last year when the whole scandal came about. I hope he can resurrect his career...He was great on Bill Maher. When he was AG of NY he made a career of going after big time corporate crooks.

3. I think he's started -
and I think he can do it. His 'crimes' have more than been paid for, and with the Sanford and Ensign stories now common knowledge, Spitzer's no longer as tainted as he once might have been perceived.

In fact, if he does it right - and appearing on "Real Time" was a great move - he could be an even bigger "Comeback Kid" than Bubba. He's a real resource, a brilliant man, and he has, I honestly believe, a lot to give.

What is the opposition going to throw at him? That he used whores? Big deal. Who doesn't know about that? At least he's not out there claiming that his Argentinian girlfriend is his "soulmate" while his wife - and the rest of the world - is listening. And he, a grown man, didn't get his parents to bail him out when he got caught banging his employee's wife, the wife of a friend.

So, yeah, I think Eliot Spitzer is on his way back, and I, for one, am very glad about it. Takes brass ones, but he's got them.....................................

4. Probably not. He made a lot of enemies while Governor, and...
that job has very little power, so he needs all the friends he can get. He may be bright and eloquent, but a lot of arrogance comes with that, and it turned off most of Albany.

As much as I hate the idea, it would be hilarious to see Rudy in that job. As Mayor, he could ramrod pretty much everyhing he wanted through, but as Governor, he would have to kiss the combined asses of the majority leaders in the Assembly and Senate. The Assembly will always be led by a Democrat, and if the Senate doesn't go Republican, Rudy is sure to have a stroke.

Perhaps that's why he's on the fence about runnning-- he won't take a job where he can't be the dictator.

5. Does not have to be a come back as governor
I agree with others that he was very impressive tonight. The fact that he is appearing on several programs - I think that I saw him on CNN or MSNBC - suggests that, at least, the MSM is open to him.

I did not like him before - not that it mattered, not being a constituent - but if he can explain complex issues to a wide audience, he will find his niche.

6. I think he can
and someone with his knowledge and experience is needed in NY politics, regardless of the office. Go for it, Eliot.

7. It's all uphill for him now that he's been so humbled. And I think
he'll climb that hill, to the benefit of public interest.

8. Yes.
The psychological atmosphere in this country is noticeably changing.

The pendulum has swung so far to the right, it is now starting to gain momentum swinging back.

He was screwing hookers, not the State of New York. Which is how I prefer it.

14. Many smart men let their dick head do all the thinking.
Despite the fact that it's been proven that the penis contains no brain cells.

15. I hope so. Despite his flaws, he is one of the best things to happen
to New York in a century. If he can keep his zipper closed, and get some feminist advisers to help patch the weak spots in his policies, he could be one hell of a force for progressive reform.

16. It's not the prostitution I have an issue with, as much as it is the hypocrisy
Since he apparently prosecuted prostitutes while being a john himself. That's what I just can't bend my mind around. But could/would I forgive him? Sure. The people whose opinion I would be more interested in are some of the prostitutes he sent to the Big House.

I was one of the greatest Eliot Spitzer fans ever, I truly saw him as a reincarnated Teddy Roosevelt trust-buster type of guy. This disappointment ranked up there with the John Edwards sleeze. Will people ever forgive John Edwards? No.

19. There's The Question Of Character...
I agree with you about Spitzer. Many here want to overlook his personal flaws cause he fights the good fight. If he were an (R), we'd hear a different tune sung here. He was forced to resign primarily due to his hypocrisies...and the demonstration of being irresponsible. It's not the hooker that was the problem, it was how he tried to hide it and if he can "cheat" for his own gain on this, how can one trust him when coming to the public trust.

That said, the man really knows about the abuses of Wall Street and his input into any reform would be invaluable. While I see him too "radioactive" (as in hate radio) to go through any confirmation, I'd like to see him as part of some commission that investigates and then makes recommendations on wholescale economic reform.

Cheers...

18. Not Prostitution
Most people I know do not hold much against him for seeing prostitutes. Like the poster above me mentioned, his sin is that he was a prosecutor who charged both prostitutes and johns for sex crimes. The same crimes he was actively committing. He made a name for himself as being a tough on crime prosecutor. He is a person that we need to hold to a higher standard. I see no difference between him and a cop who arrest young kids on small time drug position, but then buys and uses drugs on his own time.

Elliot Spitzer needs to go back under a hole where he belongs.

21. I hope not
People need to study up on Spitzer's close relationship with Jim Cramer (they were roommates at Harvard.) When Spitzer was AG, he turned the other cheek when his good friend Cramer and his gang of hedge fund cronies were naked-shortselling thousands of businesses to ruin, as well as ripping off billions from average Americans. They are the ones who funded Spitzer's campaigns for AG & Governor. If Spitzer's the best we can do, we're in a shitload of trouble.

23. No... He likes pussy too much.
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 10:30 AM by Kansas Wyatt
Now if he had an R next to his name, had a perversion involving children or wearing diapers, was in the closet, or spent a lot of time in airport restrooms, then okay, but only if he said that demons overpowered him and he was seeking guidance from his pastor.

How dare you accept a Godless heathen who likes sex with women too much!

On edit: :sarcasm:

Yes, this is how screwed up America is.

24. K&R. Loved him on this show too.
It was such a treat to see the show start with Michael Moore and then go on to Paul Krugman and Eliot Spitzer talking about crony capitalism and effective regulations and tax rates in the past.

I found myself wishing Spitzer was our treasury secretary.
