Baby Rhino Rejected By Her Mother, Will Be Brought Up By Zookeepers - pic
awwwww.....

Babies just won't sleep in their own room: A four-day-old female rhino baby lies between two keepers in her indoor enclosure in the zoo of Muenster, Germany. She was rejected by her mother, Emmi, and will be brought up by the zookeepers.

Baby Rhino Being Hand-Reared in German Zoo
September 23, 2009

snip...
According to zoo staff, the 18-year old herbivore had already killed two of her calves in the past, and had shown signs of nervousness and aggression during the birth on Sunday too. "Emmi kept pushing the little rhino into a corner," said biologist Dirk Wewers of Münster Zoo. "We decided to intervene after four minutes."

19. Makes you wonder why they'd keep inseminating it then.
If that's how it got preggers that is.

Is this a money-making enterprise, i.e. selling the offspring?

Why else impregnate an animal that has already proven it won't be a capable mother?

20. Probably just for the gene pool
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 04:41 PM by lukasahero
Rhino populations are hurting so if they can get a healthy baby rhino from a mother who hasn't already contributed to the gene pool, it increases viability of the entire pool.

24. To keep the species alive
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 05:04 PM by lunatica
Zoos are becoming the principal gene pools in the world. They're keeping species alive and healthy where many of the animals are suffering in the wild due to habitat destruction and poaching. Rhinos are particularly poached for their horns, like elephants are for their tusks.

37. I have no idea.
It is so beautiful to watch other animals step in and take care of the young. I remember, when I was a child, we had a cat that abandon her kittens. She just walked away. Wanted nothing to do with them. Our other cat, her mother (who had just had a mis-carriage) took over taking care of the kitties. I remember being so angry with the cat for not taking care of her babies. But, I also remember how happy it made the other cat to take care of her grandkids. LOL!
