Pittsburgh and the G20 Protests
If somebody was twittering what they were seeing, I swear it would sound like the Iranian protests in a lot of ways.

1. No the Iranians had permits so that was why it was bad
for the police to attack them indiscriminately. Our protesters did not have permits, so it is ok to beat the crap out of them with high tech weapons.

:sarcasm:

4. The Pitt News (University of Pittsburgh student paper) was twittering last night
as more riot police swarmed onto the campus. There was a very small protest which was completely peaceful by all accounts. Looks like the police were looking for once last opportunity to use their new toy the LRAD, to launch a few more gas canisters at students (not protesters) who were out socializing on a Friday night and to crack open a few more skulls. I have lost all respect for the Pittsburgh Police after last night.

5. here's another PItt News link - they did a great job with the photos as well

Disturbing stuff - if the police didn't expect students to check out the action, they should have closed off that part near campus... and avoided a lot of the violence/police actions that came later.

7. Most students would have been unaware of what's going on had the
riot police not descended en masse and forced the protesters into the main part of campus. There was no damage to property and the only violence was initiated by the police themselves.

8. what I read what that a bunch of "anarchists" (who obviously know nothing
about the history of anarchy) smashed a bunch of windows in various businesses on Forbes later in the evening, including Pamela's, a wonderful locally owned restaurant. That apparently led to the police pushing back and using force.

( I wasn't there- I'm just going from reports that I read)

9. The property damage occurred on Thursday night and it was one individual
who broke all the windows and he was arrested that same night. The individual was not a student and had come from out of state for the protest.

Last night was a small peaceful demonstration which occurred in a park on the edge of campus. The police forced the protesters out of the park and chased them into the main part of campus.

13. No problem.
I've been following the story closely because my son is a student at Pitt and both my husband and I are alumni.

so it was worrisome to see those shots from the Pitt News. Scary to think of police chasing students into the lobby of the Towers..
