Former Mayor Gets Probation for FEMA Fraud

GULFPORT — A federal investigation of former Gulfport Mayor Brent Warr and his wife, Laura, came to an end Friday when Brent Warr pleaded guilty to one felony count of FEMA fraud and was sentenced to three years probation.

Brent Warr also will have to repay $9,985 to FEMA and serve 100 hours of community service, U.S. District Court Judge Walter Gex III ruled.

The other 19 counts of federal Katrina and insurance fraud against Brent Warr were dropped. All 20 charges against Laura Warr were dropped, according to the plea agreement. The federal government alleged that the Warrs didn’t live in their beachfront home when Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005.

4. There were charges against his wife as well
and all of those charges were dropped. They were able to afford the most expensive and, I suspect, best connected lawyer in town. They got the kinder, gentler form of justice that the rest of us only hear about.

3. As somebody who survived Katrina two towns over, I would say the feds punted on this criminal.
People died during the storm. There was so much misery, and help was scarce. To see somebody who was much better off than those who suffered and died getting off the hook, essentially, for stealing roughly 250,000 in cash is appalling.

If he were a poor Black person like the many who did die in Biloxi, he would be spending the rest of his life in prison.
