Poll question: School vacation instead of summer vacation.
Why not have schools open year round and allow parents to choose when their child's school vacation occurs. They could chose the school vacation in spring, summer, fall, or winter.

1. It would make schooling prohibitively expensive to cater to everyone
Unless you're going to do online schooling, which is a form of homeschooling, but I understand that even online schooling has start and end dates.

2. The breaks would still be set by the school, parents would just have the option

of which ones their children take.

3. hmmmm... true, adding what amounts to a thrid semester would be more expensive
but I'd argue that it wouldn't be prohibitive, if we were truly concerned about education. :)

9. Part of the reason stress is so high in this country is that there is that working has been spread
out to 365 days a year, 24/7. In Europe I noticed, that unless you did typically 365 day jobs (nurse, etc.), the entire country had the same days off (about a month of them), and in addition, a whole month off in the summer, and that varied between July, August and September. As a result, there's far less stress over there.

Here? This is a country where working never takes a break and the less that there are fixed schedules, the more days off are eliminated, until eventually, there will be no time off at all.

I recall when I returned here how I missed having so much time off in Europe. I was very saddened by it.

And I think all "accommodations" to working throughout the year, ultimately lead to even more of a workaholic society than we already have.

I prefer the European way, where there are working schedules. Summers off. Lots of days off in between during the year.

It's a pleasure. I miss it horribly.

12. Schools are already suffering for lack of funds - everywhere in the U.S.
Where we live, for example, even districts that are well to do the public schools are between a rock and a hard place, with teachers having to pay for materials, or parents being asked to bring them in, and buses not being able to bus everyone who needs it, etc. Already they have been shortchanged for decades by the Repukes. We hardly need to demand they pull money out of places to suit those who want a new, never before used schedule for teachers and schools.

13. I think the defense budget could stand a trimming
I'm sure that would more than cover it. ;)

4. My sister lived in England; they went to school for 6 or 9 weeks and then got 3 weeks off
She loved it. The kids were still in class as much as they are here.

5. The logistics of an "open schedule" would be insane.
If some students took their break "early" then they would be behind compared to students who stayed in school.

I don't see that as even remotely possible.

Now a year round school with same number of days and a 1 month break after each qtr would be possible but it would be fixed. Everyone takes the same breaks thus all students are at the same point progress wise after each break.

6. My sis-n-law has her kids in a year round school in NC.
They have 3 week breaks every semester with 4 semesters making up a school year. Works out well. there is still time for vacations and over multiple seasons. I would think businesses would love it if they got a fall leg-up... or that travelling to a southern state becomes an option.. its super hot during the summer to really enjoy many parts of the United States.

7. The Breaks Are Set
And many schools around the country do it. I have friends in NC who have the option to send their children to an all year school or traditional school. The offer is through the public school system, so I can't imagine the costs are higher.

15. No.
I support leaving the vacation for the summer.
I support a December break near the holidays.
I do NOT support the break in Feb. and April like they do here in CT (not sure how it is in other states).
