Glenn Beck Riles Safeco Crowd with Vague, Incoherent Nonsense
Edited on Sun Sep-27-09 11:17 AM by Stephanie
I just wasted 40 minutes of my life watching Glenn Beck ramble at Safeco Field. I was curious because the news reports don't really cover the content of the speech he gave to 7000 followers in Seattle. Now I know why.

Beck's speech is an absolute, incoherent mess, laced with ominous, vague warnings that make no sense at all. Just let your voice quiver, throw in some key words like "the Constitution,", "liberty," and "9/11," and the crowd goes wild. Who is this guy and what the heck is he talking about?

YouTube - Beck at Safeco Part 4

Think of the Democrats that you actually know. The people on your street, the people that you work with. Do you think that those Democrats are actively trying to destroy our country? Think of the Republicans that you personally know. Do you think that they are actively trying to destroy the country?

The answer should be no to both of those, with an exception here or there on either side.

Now ask yourself this question. Can you think of a few people in Washington, Republican and Democrat, that are actively trying to destroy the Constitution of the United States of America? There's a difference. We send these people to Washington and they go all crazy on us. It's power, it's money. It's everything George Washington warned us against in his farewell address. They all predicted this time would come. And we will march ourselves into slavery if we don't peacefully stand up and demand our freedom.

We've got to return to the things that we know are right. You don't have to listen to some pinhead expert. Listen to yourself.

YouTube - Beck at Safeco Part 5

On September 11, our government did not know what the plan was on the Towers, but they did know that Osama bin Laden and Al Queda was a danger. But they were busy on other things. It was too politically incorrect to do anything. They didn't think Americans would do this or that.

They were busy on other things but they knew Osama bin Laden and others were ready to take us down. They did not know the plan but they knew of the threat. Americans did not.

But this time, Washington knows of the threat again. They know of the economic holocaust that could be coming our way. They know of the dangers to freedom and liberty that are coming our way. And yet they're playing the same game. But this time it is September 9 and we are awake, and we are telling them, whatever it is the game you're playing, that's fine. We're awake. We will protect our liberty, and our nation.

He went straight from high school to a job at a radio station. He attended one college class, getting in with the assistance of Joe Lieberman, but did not finish it. Per the recent Salon profile.

I would assume his audience is mostly men too. Why does this matter? Because his audience will be dead in 10-15 years.

Glenn Beck doesn't speak for 'the people'. He speaks for a few million spoiled, retired, entitled boomers who are scared of the outside world.

The oldest boomers are 63 and not yet retired -- or under present circumstances ever likely to be able to afford to retire. The boomers, especially the younger boomers, have been as screwed as anyone.

50. My mistake
The generation Beck appeals to were too young for WW2 and too old for Vietnam (born around 1940). They also grew up during a time when they got the benefits of unions w/o having to work for them (much of the work on labor reform was done before they joined the labor force).

13. White culture
Edited on Sun Sep-27-09 11:12 AM by Juche
Its a code word for the concept that white, conservative, christian males have a divine right to run everything, and anyone who isn't one doesn't deserve to have any real power or influence.

Obama, being a black liberal who is also president (or at least liberal by Beck standards) does 'hate white culture' in the sense that he is uppity and doesn't submit to the idea that conservative christian white males (like Beck) are the natural rulers of the world. Obama stepped out of his box.

So yes, Obama hates 'white culture', defined the way Beck defines it. This is why Beck won't define 'white culture'. He knows there is no way to give an honest answer and keep his reputation, or whatever reputation he has.

A contradiction of terms? Not much "culture" that I can see... McDonalds cuisine, Pat Boone music, meat and potatoes, beat up Chevy pick-ups, Country music, Thomas Kincaid "art" Martha Stewart, Wal Mart fashion? Kinda bland... now, throw in some Gay Fashion, European sports cars, Italian or Greek Cuisine, and Black Music, and you have a culture!

28. He is both like Hitler and McCarthy as he has the followers believing he has come from their
community. He is "the little guy" who speaks for them. The individual against the Establishment. The one who is "brave" and "smart" enough, smarter than the elected politicians, smarter than the professors in the schools and universities, smarter than their employers. Because he is "people smart", not "book smart".

Beck speaks their language. That's why this works. It sounds like jibberish to us, but it's perfectly clear to them.

and it was remarkably content-free. I mean, who wouldn't applaud "We appreciate excellence" and "Most Republicans and Democrats want this country to succeed"? But he never gets to any kind of point. He sounded like a second rate motivational speaker who knows how to sound sincere and give the "come to Jesus" without any of the well-known loopy rhetoric. Maybe that comes later, but I got too bored to continue.

From my notes as I was watching the 5-Part YouTube. Disjointed transcription but you get the point. Or rather, you don't get it, because there IS no point.

YouTube

Part 1

By the way, the guy that did the $20,000 worth of damage? From California.

Their arrogance will be their undoing. They believe they are right and you ahve no reason to open your mouth. They will try to shut you down and shut you up every step of the way.

You gotta ask yourself, who are we? Who are we? Who are you? Let me tell you something. THey say necessity is the mother of all invention.

Necessity is the mother of all invention. What is this government now trying to do? They're trying to take your necessity away. We've got a lot of invention coming. Don't let anyone take your necessity away. Failure is what builds you. Without failure you cannot have success. It is the mother of invention. But if tjat's the mother of invention, who's Dad? Well the govt is.

Part 2
Listen to me now. The only voice that matters is yours. Never be silent. Follow up on the news and hold their feet to the fire. Both parites want control, they just don't want the other party controlling it. They both want control, and they so misunderstand. The media has to get off that little freaky island once in a while.

Nothing seems to make sense any more, at least what's coming out of Washington.

And again they think we are terrorists. We picked up after ourselves on the Mall.

We love our institutions, they just need to be cleaned. They need to be sterilized. We know we have financial probelms in our country. Who the heck caused them.

I am willing to be poor, I am willing to not have, well not cable televisioin, you should always have cable television. I'm willing to grow my own food, I'm willing to ride the bus, I'm willing to wear old clothes, I'm willing for us - if you leave choice there so my children have a chance to succeed after we take the time to do the hard thing to mop up the mess.

They don't have to lie to us. We know we're in trouble. We're willing to do the hard work. Just leave our children freedom at the end of the road.

The one bill hat we need passed is the one that says, you are accountable for your own actions. You are accountable for your successes and your failures. You reap the rewards, you reap the profits. When did personal responsiblity fall out of fashion.

Part 3

They will do everything and anything to discredit or remove an effective voice.

Part 4

It's called life. It;s what's real. We must connect with those things. We must find our way back.

We didn't wallow in our towers falling. On 9/12

On the following Sunday after that Sunday we fell to our knees at church, we went to our houses of worhsip and we said, God hlep us. Great and mighty miracles will be witnessed by every one of us in our lifetimes. Keep a diary. It will be global in nature. And powerful miracles will be seen. They already have been.

A year ago I was warning about socialism.

And a listner called me and said...

I turned off the microphone and I had a little mini breakdown, because I was tired. I don't awnt to be the guy who warns you about these things. I'm an entertainer. I stayed up very late at night, reading as much as I can. I do get it wrong. I am a flawed human being. I'm worried for my country, and I find myself in an incredible position to be able to ring the bell of warning. It's not what I wanted to do. I do it because I know it's what you would do if you were in my posiition.

Part 5

I trust my God over my govt. I trust my military over my politicians. We must humbly, as our founders did, we must beseech our leaders humbly...

Now I'm sorry, we have a health care system that does need repair, but I don't see people clawing at the emergency room that are being turned away. A higher priority is win this war, or bring them home.

There are three things, I keep them on a chain to remind me. The three things I'm living my life by irght now. Question with boldness, Hold to the truth. How many of us currently believe things that we would have thought were insane 12 months ago? How many of us believe things that we wouldn't want to believe?

And the thrid thing is, speak without fear.

23. Heal the new "Minster of Propaganda & Hate"
Its interesting, almost entertaining to watch Beck spew from every orifice his distortions of the U.S. Constitution, and America's people. It is also intriguing to watch history repeat itself as Beck steps forward to claim Copper Crown of Hate, and the title of "The Minster of Propagand & Hate" the same title that once belonged to Rush Limbaugh, the first disciple of Joseph Goebbels ( Hitler's Minster of Propaganda ).

The blood sucker Sean Hannity must be rolling over in his coffin after working so hard for years to claim the title and Copper Crown of deception that Beck has bolted to his head.

“The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over" - Joseph Goebbels

42. I can't help but contrast Beck's visit to Seattle with the Dalai Lama's
I went to see the Dalai Lama when he visited Seattle and it was a beautiful uplifting experience shared with more than 50,000 people.

He spoke of kindness and compassion. It was one of several events and meetings that week. Each had high attendance.

Quite the contrast to Beck.

Found some links to remember that day:

Washington state governor Christine Gregoire, left, talks with the Dalai Lama during an appearance at Qwest Field.

48. Did You Know ONLY 30 Protesters Showed Up?
Yep, that's according to The Seattle Times....

I thought, maybe they pulled this number off of The AP who is notorious for under reporting when "liberals" protest and over blowing the "teabaggers" numbers. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2009949568_webbeck26m.html

But no, The AP says protesters numbered 800 and it was the largest protest in history in the small town in WA. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iRNriGY3MaU3TlkygUll5o78elngD9AVFF300

Of course the low number reported inspired the wingnuts to write the nastiest comments on the Seattle Times site - I hope someone in Seattle calls them on this enormous misrepresentation of the facts.

I won't hold my breath for a mea culpa.

49. There were two events, one in Seattle at Safeco, and one in Mount Vernon
The 800 protestors were in Mount Vernon, Beck's hometown, about 30 minutes north of Seattle. The Safeco event was earlier in the day, followed by the key to the city event in Mount Vernon.

56. Here's the Salon piece, plus, AND Part II shows the VICIOUS SADIST
Whacked BecKKK's whacked hero:
One Willard Cleon Skousen, who worked/retired from the FBI and went on to be investigated by Miss HOOVER's FBI to the tune of 2,000 pages. I've always thought it was brilliant of LIMBOsevic that his main thrust in attempting to make Conservativism respectable when he first started was to ---purposefully, deliberately--- distance himself from the kooks, the BIRCHERs, the Trilateralists, etc. He would cut off all callers who started ranting on these topics. The same way he still cuts off those true followers who slip and let loose their true racist selves---------------INSTEAD of "disguising" themselves.

Meet the man who changed Glenn Beck's life

Cleon Skousen was a right-wing crank whom even conservatives despised. Then Beck discovered him

By Alexander Zaitchik

.... But more interesting than the contents of "The 5,000 Year Leap," and more revealing for what it says about 912ers and the Glenn Beck Nation, is the book's author. W. Cleon Skousen was not a historian so much as a player in the history of the American far right; less a scholar of the republic than a threat to it. At least, that was the judgment of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI, which maintained a file on Skousen for years that eventually totaled some 2,000 pages. Before he died in 2006 at the age of 92, Skousen's own Mormon church publicly distanced itself from the foundation that Skousen founded and that has published previous editions of "The 5,000 Year Leap."

As Beck knows, to focus solely on "The 5,000 Year Leap" is to sell the author short. When he died in 2006 at the age of 92, Skousen had authored more than a dozen books and pamphlets on the Red Menace, New World Order conspiracy, Christian child rearing, and Mormon end-times prophecy. It is a body of work that does much to explain Glenn Beck's bizarre conspiratorial mash-up of recent months, which decries a new darkness at noon and finds strange symbols carefully coded in the retired lobby art of Rockefeller Center. It also suggests that the modern base of the Republican Party is headed to a very strange place. ....

...The city's ultraconservative mayor, J. Bracken Lee, fired him in 1960 for excessive zeal in raiding private clubs where the Mormon elite enjoyed their cards. "Skousen conducted his office as Chief of Police in exactly the same manner in which the Communists operate their government," Lee wrote to a friend explaining his firing of Skousen. The man is a master of half-truths. In at least three instances I have proven him to be a liar. He is a very dangerous man (and) one of the greatest spenders of public funds of anyone who ever served in any capacity in Salt Lake City government." ....

...Skousen laid low for much of the '60s. But he reemerged at the end of the decade peddling a new and improved conspiracy that merged left with right: the global capitalist mega-plot of the "dynastic rich." Families like the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds, Skousen now believed, used left forces -- from Ho Chi Minh to the American civil rights movement -- to serve their own power. ....

"Skousen's personal position," wrote a dismayed Quigley, "seems to me perilously close to the 'exclusive uniformity' which I see in Nazism and in the Radical Right in this country. In fact, his position has echoes of the original Nazi 25-point plan." ....

Skousen may have been too extreme for the Quorum of the Twelve in Salt Lake City, but he soon found rehabilitation on the intellectual margins of Reagan's Washington. In 1980, Skousen was appointed to the newly founded Council for National Policy, a think tank that brought together leading religious conservatives and served as the unofficial brain trust of the new administration. At the Council, Skousen distinguished himself by becoming an early proponent of privatizing Social Security. He also formed relationships with other evangelical church leaders and aligned the LDS church with an increasingly religious GOP. ....

..."The Making of America." Besides bursting with factual errors, Skousen's book characterized African-American children as "pickaninnies" and described American slave owners as the "worst victims" of the slavery system. ....

"The 5,000 Year Leap" is not the only Skousen title to find new life on the 912 circuit. The president of the National Center for Constitutional Studies, Dr. Earl Taylor Jr., is currently touring the country offering daylong seminars to 912 chapters based on Skousen's "Making of America." For $25, participants will receive a bagged lunch and stories about America's religious Founders and their happy slaves. An ad for Taylor's "Making of America" seminar, currently featured on the Web site of the Tampa 912 Project, claims that Skousen's book is "considered a great masterpiece to Constitutional students (and is) the 'granddaddy' of all books on the United States Constitution."

Like so much declaimed by W. Cleon Skousen and his 21st century acolyte Glenn Beck, this last statement is fantasy. But it is also a profitable and popular one. In coming to terms with a movement that has an ever more tenuous relationship with accepted fact, we relearn that perennial lesson grasped even by J. Edgar Hoover's FBI. Fantasies can have serious consequences.

The making of Glenn Beck

His roots, from the alleged suicide of his mom to Top 40 radio to the birth of the morning zoo. Part 1 of 3

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/09/22/glenn_beck_two/index.html

Glenn Beck becomes damaged goods

The radio phenom takes over the morning zoo, makes fun of miscarriages and flames out. Part 2 of 3

.... Beck's real broadcasting innovation during his stay in Kentucky came in the realm of vicious personal assaults on fellow radio hosts. A frequent target of Beck's in Louisville was Liz Curtis, obese host of an afternoon advice show ... Curtis, whom Beck had never met and with whom he did not compete for ratings, was overweight. And Beck never let anyone forget it. ....

...He told Beck to lay off Curtis, suggesting he instead attack a morning DJ like himself, who could return fire. "Beck told me, 'Sorry, all's fair in love and war,'" remembers Meiners. "He continued with the fat jokes, which were exceedingly cruel, pointless, and aimed at one of the nicest people in radio. Glenn Beck was over-the-top childish from Day One, a punk who tried to make a name for himself by being disruptive and vengeful." ....
Louisville is where Beck began experimenting with another streak that would become more pronounced in later years: militaristic patriotism and calls for the bombing of Muslims.

The birth of Glenn Beck as Radio Super Patriot can be traced to the morning of April 15, 1986. This was the morning after Ronald Reagan ordered U.S. warplanes to bomb Moammar Gadhafi's Tripoli palace in response to the bombing of a Berlin nightclub frequented by U.S. servicemen. Beck sounded stoned during the show -- and given his later claim to have smoked pot every day for 15 years, might have been -- ....

"A couple days after Kelly's wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, 'We hear you had a miscarriage,' " remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. "When Terry said, 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce (Kelly) apparently can't do anything right -- about he can't even have a baby." ....

"It was low class," says Miller, now president of Open Stream Broadcasting. "There are certain places you just don't go."

"Beck turned Y95 into a guerrilla station," says Kelly. "It was an example of the zoo thing getting out of control. It became just about pissing people off, part of the culture shift that gave us 'Jackass.'" Among those who were appalled by Beck's prank call was Beck's own wife, Claire, who had been friends with Kelly's wife since the two worked together at WPGC.

The stunt was a textbook case of media marketing 101: Attention is good; controversy is better. Outrage is the gift that keeps on giving. ....

Glenn Beck rises again

Getting clean, getting Mormon, getting talk radio -- and going to Yale, with the help of Joe Lieberman. Part 3 of 3

.... Beck didn't just fire people in fits of rage -- he fired them slowly and publicly. "He used to take people to a bar and sit them down and just humiliate them in public. He was a sadist, the kind of guy who rips wings off of flies," remembers a colleague. ....

One local politician who appreciated Beck's regular digs at the governor was the man who had defeated Weicker in a bitterly contested 1988 senate race: Democrat Joe Lieberman. Beck and the senator were friendly throughout the '90s, until they fell out over Lieberman's refusal to back the impeachment of Bill Clinton in 1998. But before they parted ways, Lieberman would play a role in Beck's search for a worldview and identity by helping Beck enroll part-time at Yale in the fall of 1996. The ADHD-diagnosed Beck didn't last long at Yale. He took one class, "Early Christology," and dropped out. ....

"The guy had dozens of enemies. People thought he was an annoying, washed-up has-been. When I see people today bragging that they knew him back then, I'm like, 'But you fucking hated him!' "

64. BecKKK, as a convert to Mormonism, re-discovered the discredited SKOUSEN.
For himself. You know, converts tend to me more zealous than the native practitioners. Plus, I suspect that BecKKK was running out of "new" ideas to shock and scare people with, so he found a ready made source in the old fart's crap.
