My (R) mother-in-law said she wants another terrorist attack as big as 9-11.
We were talking about health care, and she has a "I've got mine, screw you" attitude. I reminded her of how her daughter, grandson, neighbor's grown son, and best friend's grandson are all "uninsurable". She said most people without insurance won't pay any premiums for a public option. She didn't have any source for that, only her family experience (parents, siblings, nephews, etc. I asked her if she wanted them to have access to healthcare, and of course she did.

Somehow the discussion ends up on "Bush kept us safe" and I said "yeah, after 3,000 people were killed," with a sarcastic laugh. She accuses me of laughing at their deaths, and I told, no, just the absurdity of letting Bush get away with "he kept us safe." That was when she stated she wanted smother big attack. I said "you can't possibly want people to die to prove your point" and she proudly declared she did.

My MIL isn't an educated woman, but watching these idiots on tv has helped turn her into a lunatic when it comes to Obama, the military, etc. It makes me really sad that she has become so irrational.

8. They're not all like that
I have a MIL, and she's a sweet, very kind and tolerant old lady. She's a devout Catholic, but has fully accepted the
fact that I (and, more importantly, her granddaughters/our children) are religion-free. She has seen so many marriages
go bust even though the parties were supposedly very religious, she is just happy we're happy, and she adores her
religion-free granddaughters.

Sometimes you luck out with a MIL, sometimes you don't.

57. Mine is great as well. Very sweet and liberal (at 85).
My husband's family lived in Illinois farm country when they were growing up in the 50s/60s. They did church, taught Sunday school, the whole nine yards. Interestingly, all of the members of the family -- parents, six siblings -- wound up rejecting religion after they all came to the same conclusion eventually -- that it was a bunch of crap.

4. Republicans are illogical and highly vindictive individuals
They wear their hatred before anything. I mean, who on earth would cheer at the execution of people, be it in war or as death penalty? They would even destroy themselves just to defend the Republican causes they've been told to defend by their leadership. I see it as a sort of evil fraternity.

No one will ever convince me that a conservative is not a selfish sob.

And I don't mean that all have gruff voices and violent tattoos. Some might, in fact, be mild-mannered in their manner of speaking. But their ideology always leads to economic violence.

And conservative economics always leads to mass poor. And its extreme is aryanism.

56. She is so weird. She feels such a sense of entitlement because she
always had a job until she retired. Her husband was career military, but didn't advance too far up, and she doesn't get a pension from the military now that he is deceased. She doesn't think super-wealthy should have to pay more taxes, so she is content with lettingthe deficit grow. It is absolute stupidity, ignorance, and "I've got mine, screw you" of an attitude, except when it comes to her aging siblings, or grandkids, or people she knows. She's mental.

(interviewing the homeless to see what their past had been, as a way of knowing how to tackle the situation), and you could visibly see this man was ill, had no teeth, looked horrific, and probably did not have much life left ahead of him and not 1 penny to his name, yet he said he would "NEVER" respect someone who took welfare.

They're frikkin mentally ill.

feels. The hate for Obama and democrats is so overwhelming they just can't help themselves. They want another 9-11 so they can say I told you democrats can't keep us safe. Funny though in my family we have military members who served over 60 yrs and they were all democrats. You know you don't see many and I mean many upper middle class families sending their kids off to war. I find it funny they think god is on their side. Always yelling and screaming we are protected by god and god chose Bush.

Here is a comeback when they say that. Crazy, thinking that way than he would have picked Hitler to save Germany.

She is also a vindictive, irrational, proudly willfully ignorant Republican who believes everything the talking heads spew from the propaganda box and who just can't wait to watch Tom the dancing bugman on Dancing with the Stars.

Then again, she is a major control freak, and control freaks have an overwhelming need to see the world in clearly delineated black-and-white terms, so it isn't surprising. To her Republican = Good and Democrat = Bad, and she won't be told otherwise, as it would mess with her considerable control issues. She is beyond reason.

I have a friend who is a reformed repug who was an US army demolition expert for over 8 of his 16 years in the army. He blew stuff up left right and center and he explained to me how the WTC towers were demoed and how the pancake effect is complete BS (main columns should have still been standing, etc). And then I watched this movie and I will be buggered - all these experts said the exact same thing he did.

37. My husband is a retired demolition guy, too.
And he understands that the unique construction of the World Trade Center was what led to its collapse.

Before the terrorist attack, the twin towers were 110 stories tall. Constructed of lightweight steel around a central core, the World Trade Center towers were about 95% air. After they collapsed, the hollow core was gone.

http://architecture.about.com/od/disastersandcollapses/a/twintowerfall.htm

There were no "columns" to remain standing.

so if he's saying that the building was constructed other than how it actually was constructed, then he's either gone insane and forgetful, or some nutjob conspiracist has edited his words to say something else.

Fucking hell, I wish people would at least attempt to understand at least a smidgen of physics before they start pontificating on how buildings fall down.

77. There were no main columns, there was no demo
I have been a licensed architect since 1986. The WTC had no internal columns. It had an exo-skeleton of columns and an inner core that housed the elevators and stairwells. The floor structures spanned between these two vertical structural elements. The vertical exterior ribs were greatly compromised by the impact, the heat caused the horizontal floor supporting steel to deform, thermal expansion, that is why there are expansion joints in structures to account for even a delta temp difference of 100 degrees. The heat caused extreme deformation of the horizontal elements and their connections with the vertical elements (many of which were gone on impact) gave way.

The pancake effect is complete physics. Shit falls down towards the center of the earth, gravity is attractive. It is not a tree cut at it's base, it is a house of cards.

This is not to say it was not LIHOP, or even MIHOP. I am somewhere between the two and at best for W, gross negligence, but I do know that controlled demolition was not involved.

94. The thing is, one doesn't NEED the speculative "events" to believe in MIHOP.
http://www.historycommons.org/project.jsp?project=911_project

All you really need is the Timeline. Before, during and after. All real events. All documented by mainstream media sources. If one doesn't come away from this at LEAST conceding the LIHOP argument, then I just have no hope for that person. Some of these events are just TOO dubious and out of the realm of believability to make logical sense. Even Popular Mechanics' "experts" are pretty much reduced to "appeal to authority" fallacies and flaccid apologist garble when confronted with hard questions about the real events Thompson outlines in his timeline.

46. We had to leave. We rounded up the kids, got our stuff, said our goodbyes and left.
She attacked me personally back in 2001 after 9-11. She got really bitchy on me. Hubby told her off and we left. We didn't call or write until just before Christmas. I didn't miss her, either. Hubby, the kids and I had alot of fun not going to visit. She calmed down after that, so I guess this one has been about 8 years in the making.

I do love my full-blooded Czech MIL, but sometimes she is so stupid about stuff, and it doesn't seem to bother her when she knows she is wrong on facts or is saying something as ugly as wanting another attack.

for her ignorance...I wonder if she would regret such a statement then..more than likely she would...sorry but people like that don't deserve respect in my opinion...I am tired of putting the blame on the media nut bag right winged talking heads...she must own up to her own actions and or words...

51. I hear you. It is like the law of threes or some other kharmic
justice is possibly ready to pounce on her attitude, and that has me a little concerned. I go back and forth on belief in my personal deliberations of spiritual matters and consequences, so she does bother me with talk like that.

50. Too bad she's your MIL. . .
otherwise you could have suggested she volunteer to be one of the victims for the terrorist attack she yearns for in this country.

There is something explicitly anti-American when a political philosophy dictates that some other innocent citizens should suffer because this woman perceives it as the only path for her ideologues to return to power.

The more I hear about people like your MIL, the more determined I am to never vote for any Republican candidate on any level for any reason.

58. You don't want to know how vicious she can be to her own detriment.
One of her sisters, let's call her "Sandy," takes care of her own three grown mentally disabled daughters. A few years ago, "Sandy" won a $1MM lottery. About 40% or so went to taxes, and she used some of it for fun, and there wasn't alot left for setting up some trust funds for the girls, but my MIL was horribly jealous. I had to explain to her that if she is going to be jealous of her sister Sandy, then if she wants the money, she also gets the disabled children. I told her she had to completely trade places with her, and asked her if she would. She never expressed jealousy over it again.

59. This time perhaps a bigger attack
could be made on a country club run by and attended by right winger only. Perhaps there is some enclave somewhere that has that, and you could mention to your MIL that you would like such an attack on it.

A possibility could be the Trump Tower, if a country club doesn't have the exclusive clientele of pugs. Or any major skyscraper in Dallas, or other mostly Repug city in Texas. We could secretly tell any Dems to stay home from work on that day.

:sarcasm:

Fair enough; if she wants to encourage the deaths of thousands or millions, she's mentally ill. And not in a good way.

79. Sounds like she's trying to get your goat
Many mothers subconsciously feel in competition w/ their daughters-in-law. While you're trying to find common ground, she may feel compelled to win. Getting you all bent out of shape is one way of doing it. So that's her story and she's sticking to it.

I would supervise her interactions w/ your kids, so you can later clear up any crap she might tell them. I'd be particularly watchful for racist messages. That stuff has to be nipped in the bud immediately and in no uncertain terms. Saying something as clear and simple as "I don't think that's true", if she makes racist or ethnic generalizations in front of them should keep her from poisoning their impressionable young minds. I wouldn't worry about giving offense at those times.

The rest of the time I'd talk w/ her about gardening, casserole recipes, and anything else absolutely bland and uncontroversial. If she brings up anything even vaguely political, I'd pretend not to hear and change the subject.

Merely expressing her offensive political opinions to you is not something your husband can help you with, so I wouldn't keep reporting her remarks to him. Better off enjoying the time you two have together than souring it by rehashing wingnut things she said. Venting and getting validation for your feelings were fine when you were just learning who she is. After that, tattling is just giving her the power to add negative drama into your marriage and making him uncomfortable. You don't actually expect or want to make him stop loving her? It would be different if she were disrupting your life in some way like interfering w/ the way you handle your kids or prying into your finances. That would be something your husband could and should straighten her out on.

If you're still steaming when she leaves, it's better for you to pop onto DU for a few minutes to regain your feeling of sanity.

So stay strong and control the direction of the conversation so she can't score points by upsetting you. It'll lose it's appeal for her and she'll gradually stop doing it.

96. Did you try telling her that the idea of "Bewsh kept us safe" is a logical fallacy?
It'd be the same as me doing this:

Me: (clapping rapidly and loudly outside my house)

Freeper: "Why are you clapping?"

Me: "Why, to keep the TIGERS from attacking!"

Freeper: "But there aren't any tigers here."

Me: "WOW! This clapping thing's working better than I thought!"

It's a fallacy of cause and effect. A president cannot keep us safe from something none of us have ONE bit of control over any more than you or I can.

http://www.historycommons.org/project.jsp?project=911_project

Arguably, Bewsh's ignorance of intelligence from at least 11 countries and the August 6 Presidential Daily Briefing indicated that he didn't even take conscionable action during those "vacations" and also displayed glaring amounts of "ball dropping" on his part, not vigilance of any kind.

So even tossing aside the logical fallacy and solely judging him by these and many other bits of ignorance and blow-offs, one could argue that he didn't really "keep us safe" at all when the time came.
