21. Not everyone is going to simply chose the city on the continent they live
I wouldn't say that makes it obvious.

8. This is simply not true.
There are certainly people opposed to the games coming to Chicago, but there is also a whole lot of enthusiasm for the Olympics coming here in 2016.

22. We thought 1996 was gonna be gridlock here in Atlanta..
Traffic was better during the Olympics than any time I can think of before or since.. Atlantans stayed away from the city in droves.

6. Chicago, obvi, but if not, hopefully Rio
As an American and a frequent visitor to Chicago, I'd love them to get the games. Chicago has really flowered as a city over the past couple decades, and what better way to showcase it?

However, I won't be upset at all if Rio gets it. South America really should get the games sometime soon, and there's so much enthusiasm for it there.

Tokyo's had it many times before and Madrid? Well, London's getting in 2012, so I don't really see a reason to have it twice in a European city within 4 years.

14. If Chicago doesn't get its youth violence problem
dealt with effectively, I don't think it'll get the Olympics. And I'm not sure it should.

7. I was at SportAccord where all the cities made their final proposals
and I can tell you that the most enthusiasm was for Rio's proposal. Mostly because South America has never had an Olympics but also because the Brazilians were the most engaging. Now as to how any of the cities can afford them is another question.

16. They'd be my #2
I was there back in 1993 and I loved the city.
I just don't know where they'd PUT the venues, the place seemed a bit packed in, I can imagine there's been new development in the last 16 years.

18. Not much love for Tokyo, eh?
Oh well.

It's my understanding that Tokyo is actually the best equipped city of the four to handle the games, but there are two big disadvantages. For one, the games were just in China so sentiment would certainly seem to be "what, Asia again!?" which is understandable. And secondly, the people here by and large definitely do NOT want the games, at least among the people I've talked to and the local news articles I've read.

Still, I live near Tokyo so I'm kinda hoping the games will be here (simply for convenience and the hype of it all).

Someone up-thread commented that Tokyo has had the games many times? Actually, as for the summer games it was just the once (1964) though the winter Olympics have been in Japan (but not near Tokyo) twice I believe

23. Rio would be awesome -- I just hope it is not Madrid
The olympics would help the Rio and its needy citizens. We get to host the games very often here in the US so Chicago can wait.

Regardless, I hope it is not Madrid since they had a couple of ugly events at soccer games with fans making monkey noises when black soccer players touched the ball.
