1. That last one insults 8th graders ...
Most of them are much smarter than that sign suggests ...

3. I believe they actually write for the 6th grade comprehension level
... at least that's what my local newsrag came in at.

18. Yup, you're right, it's the sixth grade.
I used to write for them and that's what was expected, sixth grade level, no big words... :eyes:

21. Well, there was actually a reason for that that isn't eye-rolling worthy.
When newspapers started, many people in very rural areas weren't educated beyond what they were taught by the elders in their families. They couldn't understand big words, but still thought it was important to keep up with world, state and local events (they may have had little book-learning, but were NOT stupid).

Therefore, newspaper people wrote so that both the educated doctor on the hill and the less-than-school-taught farmer in the dell could both understand what was going on in their county, state, country and world.

Not a bad idea.

I love learning these things. :-)

Actually, what I wrote about were the network TV shows, so maybe was dealing with an even lower grade level. :eyes:

And it's probably true that there's still that dichotomy between groups of readers. Those with less formal education may be more likely to read the daily newspaper, while their more educated counterparts would be more likely to get their news on the internets...

We got a huge complaint when someone (not me) used the word "niggardly," meaning parsimonious or frugal. I admit, bad choice. x(

And I got into it with my copy editor who insisted I couldn't use the word "obstreperous" to describe Bart Simpson... :silly:

27. USAToday lowered the bar and added the fun colors.
It's occasionally fun to read the same story in USAToday and a real paper (especially European papers) for quick gauge of how far we've fallen.

4. These photos are way too cool. Kudos!
I love the fact that it is the progressive/liberal movement which draws out the most compassionate and talented people.

We democrats, if we can humble ourselves and work together, have the skills.

Sadly, the republicans seemingly have a corner on only "the hate" and "the stupid."

Let's convert the younger one's who will take time to listen and ignore the rest?

Excellent work! :yourock:

5. Terrific job
And it suggested to me to wonder where some of those signs came from. The people holding them don't seem capable of having produced the signs themselves, and I'd guess they aren't the types to hire professional sign companies to produce their protest signs. Where did the signs come from? Who paid for them? And do the tools carrying those signs have the slightest appreciation for the remarkable irony of volunteering to carry signs produced by their taskmasters and slave drivers?

The only translations I could come up with are:

1-"I'm completely addled"

2-"I'm out of my meds"

15. Old joke here on DU.
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 01:46 PM by Rex
I'm sure someone will post the pic, but we have a famous moron that changed the very meaning of the word with his sign at a RWinger protest. I'm sorry, but I am too lazy to google the pic for you.

Just google 'moran man' or something like that.

16. Well yeah, there's the "Get a brain, Moran" sign...
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 01:52 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
but in the title he seems to be referring to the freepers as "Morans" - the obvious derogatory remark exists but then is capitalized for that iconic freeper protest. I'm pretty sure the freeper's posted in this pictures are not in Moran's camp (a democrat), so the joke just isn't doing it for me I guess.

24. you're even more confused now than before.
the Moran guy was a random Iraq qar supporter back in 2003 or so. he was the "first" idiot to become famous holding up a misspelled sign. he is a right winger. he was telling US to "get a brain! Morans". this started the trend of using and ridiculing "freeperisms", misspellings etc. used by the idiots on the right. chances are if you see a word spelled wrong in a post title, it is a freeperism. it has nothing to do with rep. Moran.

tomorrows lesson on posting od DU: learning how to reply to the original poster, not the bottom post in the thread.
