WICHITA — A Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputy is expected to survive after he was shot around noon today while responding to a call in southeast Wichita about a possible larceny, authorities said this afternoon.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Robert Hinshaw said it is possible the call was a set-up, used to lure the officer to the scene of the shooting at 3636 S. Rock Road.

He said the deputy was out of surgery and was in critical condition at Wesley Medical Center. But he said doctors expected the deputy to survive.

Hinshaw said authorities have identified a suspect and his location. They think the suspect, 27, is in a house near where the shooting occurred. He said authorities were attempting to make contact with the suspect.

In 2005 I lost a good friend who was a Sheriff in my home town. This hits kind of close to home

6. A good friend of mine was shot in the line of duty.
He was responding to a report of an armed man in a store lot. The man apparently wanted a "suicide-by-cop."

As my friend, a shift commander, pulled up in his marked squad car, he saw the guy ready to shoot into the windshield of another officer, point-blank. The man shot at my friend, instead.

My friend lost his eye and part of his brain. A young father, he's still on duty -- a great man who was ready to give his life for his fellow man.

I hope and pray for the deputy in Kansas, greenbriar.

My deepest sympathies to you and your friend's family. Your loss is irreplaceable.

14. Not all of us...just idiots who look at unrecommend as a bright and
shiny little toy. They think they're making a point. The only point they're making is that they are assholes, when it comes to threads like this.

That said, I am sickened by this story.

15. and now he is dead
I do not personally know this latest officer that was killed in the line of duty, but I know all to well how such an act affects family, friends and community.

Matthew Hayden Samuels was an awesome guy, a loving husband, friend and sheriff who gave his entire life to the community he died for.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this latest horrible act.

16. one more rec
Officer Ricky Timbrook was murdered while pursuing a suspect here in my hometown. He chased the suspect around the corner of a building and the suspect was waiting with a gun. Shot him once, died of his wounds. Regardless of how you feel about the police, there are some (most I would argue) who do the job because they truly feel an obligation to protect their fellow citizens. Those who die in the line of service deserve our thanks and respect.

Im glad the officer is recovering greenbriar.
