9. Actually, Glen Beck is not a bad candidate. |
|
The criteria aren't neccessarily for only good folk. Remember, Ayattolah Khomeini and Joseph Stalin were previous winners. I believe the requirement is who had the greatest effect for good or evil during the year.

Just from the choices above, I would have to say Rachel Maddow. The only other two people who come close are Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama. Ted has kind of been person of the year his whole life, and Michelle has done a lot of cool stuff but in terms of moving the population in a liberal direction I would say Rachel is the most important. Besides Olbermann and Maher, she is probably the most well known liberal newscaster in America. In fact she almost makes MSNBC worth watching. If MSNBC were to get its shit together and fucking hire Cenk Uygur and the Young Turks they could have a serious power block of programming.

10. I think you guys are kidding yourselves with Maddow here. |
|
I think she's great, don't get me wrong, but a snowball has a better chance in hell...she is simply not famous enough.
Glenn Beck, on the other hand...
Or even better, the entire right wing noise machine (kinda like the P.C. that one year). For better or worse (worse, obviously) the fucking noise machine has influenced political discourse and attitudes in America and around the world more than anything, to the Nth degree in fact.

|
Person of the Year isn't about person that does the most good. I would say he's been very influential this year to some people.

In all truth, I wasn't even aware of the distinction until I went to fact-check your claims. And you're right. No biggie.
I'd even like to give up the 2006 cover, but that's water under the bridge.

34. We'll see how the Vikes fare for the rest of the season. I like Favre well |
|
enough but root for the Bears in that division.
When Barry Sanders was ripping holes in the cosmos for the Lions, I liked watching the Lions just to watch him run. The wretched Lions haven't been the same since Barry packed it in.
If Favre leads the Vikes to a Super Bowl berth the aging athlete as triumphant hero has a real shot for that cover.

He is taking the spotlight on a lot of issues. Even though he's pretty much powerless, he has become the symbol of totalitarian rule and ballsy statements.
