102. And the voters in their states *want* to continue being cornholed by the insurance companies . . .
Edited on Tue Sep-29-09 09:35 PM by MrModerate
left to die broke, or see their loved ones put in an early grave? Perhaps the voters in their states are insurance company executives or shareholders and so want to see the current rapacious and ineffective system continue.

But I don't think so.

As I read the polls, this issue transcends red and blue, and even if there are more left-of-center voters on board with it than right-of-center, there's still broad majority (slender though it might be) support.

So who are they really representing?

204. Not all of us do...
And the "they are representing their constituents" garbage isn't true of ANYONE nowadays. They all have a corporate backer/donation committee that they answer to...it aint the people. North Dakota is a ridiculously red state. The ONLY reason we have democratic representation in Congress is because the hypocritical douchebags that make up that red base NEED the farm subsidies that those three gentleman bring home.

That being said, considering Kent and Byron's past voting record on other important Democratic issues...any North Dakota Republican would be MUCH worse than this DINO.

131. Sorry, but insofar as Baucus goes, he is going against the grain.
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 01:22 AM by BlueMTexpat
His town halls in MT have been full of single-payer advocates. MT is not so much a "red" state as an independent one and Obama is very popular there; McCain just barely won the majority of votes in 2008.
Baucus is in BIG trouble in his own state. Montanans are close enough to Canada to "get" it for the most part. In fact, one reason that Schweitzer is popular there is that when he was a candidate for office he used to take busloads of Montanans into Canada to get the health care that they could not receive in the US.

North Dakota, because of its proximity to Canada and Minnesota (generally a liberal state) is like MT in many ways. It's difficult to put voters from these two states into boxes because they're generally not single-issue voters. While I don't know the other states as well as I do these two, I would say that health care generally is not so much an issue between "red" and "blue" in all of these states as it is the individual Senators' being beholden to insurance company lobbyists.

What we need is Senators with backbone ... these are all spineless jellyfish ... and just as lethal to the welfare of our country. The answer is NOT to vote for Republicans. It's to encourage some primary opposition for them from the "Democratic wing of the Democratic party." That's what Howard Dean was doing as DNC chair. I don't believe that any other DNC chairs have understood how necessary this is.

I've never been to Arkansas but there have been some great Arkansans, including one of my all-time favorites, Senator J. William Fulbright. And one William Jefferson Clinton didn't do all that bad a job for us all either.
Hang in there! Not all of us define our fellow citizens only by the crazies.
We're all in this together. It's an everlasting shame that the crazies don't realize that their best interests lie with us because we actually care what effect actions have on our fellow citizens.

ARE they representing the majority of their constituents? They were elected with a "D" by their name. The voters of their state voted for a "D" because they wanted them to vote with the "R's"???? I don't think so. Do the majority in these constituents not want a public option? I dunno. But I'll bet they do want it seeing as the majority of American want it.

At least if there were only 55 democrats, it wouldn't be credible to lay 100% of the blame on Democrats, because anything that passed would legitimately have to have "bipartisanship" to pass. As is, we are getting Democrats voting against the people, and the people are starting to blame Democrats. Because we all know "republicans are irrelevant, they have no power".

the only people who wanted meaningful health reform. A majority of Republicans all over the country wanted it too. They may have some say in whether or not these guys are reelected. If I think someone has betrayed my trust, I'm not going to vote for him. I don't think we are the only people who feel sold out right now. Obama let these guys walk all over us. He has to share a large portion of the responsibility for what happened and what will happen next, too. I supported him, Now I have no more trust for him and very little respect. He really spent his potential on a mess of crap and now he expects us all to eat it. Congress? Yes, them too. But I didn't expect anything better from them. I was hoping he could work with them. That was a joke. To the best of my knowledge he didn't even talk to them. He was too busy playing paddy fingers with the Republicans who spit on everything I think is meaningful.

195. Unfortunate, but true...
One of the sad realities of politics is that when Republicans elect someone in a blue state or Democrats elect someone in a Red state, you have to understand what you are getting and be thankful for it.

A conservative Democrat in one of those states is better than a far right Republican which is what you would get otherwise. It's better to get the right vote 45-55% of the time from the person in that seat than 0% of the time.

It doesnt mean we have to like it when they vote the wrong way, but lets not forget what we are talking about here. Republicans in those states are the farthest right of the far right.

Where do you live? on the moon. Democratic incumbent NEVER FUCKING LOSE THEIR PRIMARIES. It is a problem with our system and until people like you understand it we cant fix it.

It is so easy to say we will defeat them in the primaries but it wont fucking happen. Read "For Competitive Primaries" in The Nation, Sept 28.

We must support organizations outside the party to defeat incumbents.

I think Lieberman might disagree with you about that. And I certainly hope Arlen Specter learns that at Joe Sestak's hands.

Lots of defeatism here. All we're learned is that electing a "Democratic" majority in Congress and a "Democratic" President is worth zilch. We have to go for real Democrats. So it will take longer. Let's hope we get it done before the whole country and the planet collapses.

193. Lieberman is the exception that proves the rule. Even when he lost the primary
the Democratic Party helped him get back in the Senate Club. If you look at the Lieberman case you will see just what is needed to defeat an incumbent Senator. You must find someone willing to buck the Democratic Party because the Party clearly supports incumbents. That would be political suicide for most challengers. You would have to find a large source of money, because big money won't support an incumbent challenger, Lamont used a lot of his own money. I strongly urge you to read:

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20090928/nichols

Recognizing a system that is broken in the hopes of fixing it, isn't "defeatism". Until the broken system is recognized, it can't be fixed.

I think incumbent Democrats can be beaten in the primaries but not thru the Democratic Party. An outside organization will have to be used like moveon or PDA.

...as the sun rising and setting.

It's not the only way.

The HELP bill will have a PO and the House bill already does.

It's not dead by a long shot.

Public Option voted down? I'm stuck at work, what happened?

It's not really reform without it.

Insurance companies wrecked health care in this country. They need competition. Actually, they need to be taken out of the equation altogether.

of taxpayer's money to the insurance industry, you can come to the head of the line to apologize to me. I am not gloating. I am crying. If people had listened to me and others who predicted this would happen when we saw the health care lobbyists welcomed to Congress and the White House, while single payer advocates were shut out and even arrested, we could have scared them into doing the right thing by not caving in. We would have gotten the Medicare for All public option. Any body who has ever had to buy a used car knows how it's done. Our Congress people know too, but they pulled a bait and switch and anyone who doesn't see it is just plain stupid.

Hoyer Cool To Repealing Wiretap Immunity
Source: Associated Press

(09-29) 10:31 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer made clear Tuesday that he would be cool to a Senate proposal to take away the retroactive immunity now given to telecommunications companies that participated in warrantless wiretapping during the George W. Bush administration.

"I don't think that revisiting that issue is really going to get us anyplace," the Maryland Democrat said at a news conference.

His comment came a day after Senate Democrats Chris Dodd, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, Russ Feingold and Jeff Merkley said they planned to introduce legislation to repeal a provision in a 2008 act granting immunity to telecom companies that helped the government spy on Americans in suspected terrorism cases.

115. Perhaps public referendums...
...Referenda? Get propositions, ballot measures, whatever before the voters in each state in which the public is asked to approve a law that eliminates all lobbying of elected officials and all private financing of candidates for public office. With a bit of publicity, the measures would pass with about 95-percent of the vote in all 50 states, I believe.

I've EVER seen! Look who ran against him the LAST time out! I'm NOT surprised by any of his votes, MOST are predictable and not many I EVER support!

I've said far too many times... it's so very difficult to vote them out... THEY HAVE THE MONEY, THEY HAVE THE NAME RECOGNITION.... AND.... THEY HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE AROUND THEM TO MAKE SURE the shit gets out there and spread around!

I come here less and less, I decided to watch Rockefeller yesterday, but then as Nelson kept interrupting with his "inquiries" I KNEW once again what the outcome would be!!

Not only am I suffering from a really bad cold, my stomach churns not only from it, but the bile in my stomach is compounded by yet even more betrayal!

Going back to bed!!

156. I sure hope you can eat "Hope"..or that "Hope" is a band-aid for those so sorely ailing
with no health care..or maybe "hope" is a tent in the new tent cities springing up everywhere in this nation!

Or maybe "Hope" is jobs for the 6 million who can't find a job and can't feed their kids..or maybe "hope" will pay the hospital bill so many are going bankrupt because they can't pay or their insurance company is fucking them out of care they paid for!

Anyone who lives believing in "Hope" and using that phrase as an excuse to vote for anyone..is a damn fool..and is fucking the rest of us.

Hope is for Idiots that can not think or reason..or the delusional.

Show me the money.........verify everything..prove to me what you are going to do..not what you say!

I left this message on his machine tonight:

Senator Nelson, this is (name and address). I volunteered for you in youfirst senate campaign. I displayed your sign in my yard, and I am extremely disappointed in your vote on the Rockefeller amendment. Because you clearly answer to Humana and not the voters, my vote will oppose you in the primaries and I will not give another nickel to the the DSCC or any other group who may be channeling financial support to you, Baucus, Tester, Lincoln, or anyone else on the Democratic side of the aisle who makes this effort to sabotage the president. Thank you Senator Nelson.

Re-elected! He's a smug piece of SHIT! I lived in Florida since he was elected and never liked him from the get-go! He's a person fully comfortable putting his middle finger in the air, to see which way the wind blows... then makes a decision!

But mostly, at this point in his career, he doesn't care WHAT YOU THINK! I've had many "back & forths" with this P.O.S (piece of shit) and even how you get to reach him is even more difficult than most!

You can call him, but the last time I tried, he wasn't taking emails! But then, I stopped a long time ago... he just doesn't care, and all I even got back from him was the "standard" reply!

How I miss Bob Graham!!!!

THAT SHOULD WARM THE COCKLES OF YOUR HEART!

162. I don't think you 'get it'....
What happens in 6 months when people are sent to prison because they can't afford the extra 1000 dollars per month for an acceptable insurance policy? People on both the right and left will threaten revolution if that doesn't change immediately. And, just as Medicare and Social Security, are never scrapped but just constantly "updated", this plan will be updated with a 'public option' which will evolve into a true single-payer plan within 5 years......For gosh sakes be a little patient. Our president campaigned on a single-payer system and he will deliver, but like he said, we will have to do it in stages. This has been the plan all along. Our socialism will come eventually. It is inevitable.

Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 10:14 AM by flyarm
I have worked and waited 37 years for this time..no my patience has run out dear..and this dear one is not immediate..this is a very very long time coming..and now iis the time to stand up..or get the fuck out of our way..those of us who have fought for this for a lifetime of 35- 50 years!

You may be new to this, perhaps thay is why you think of this as "change immediately."..but you are sorely mistaken if you think this is new to the rest of us!

I raised my family with no national health care..but lived parts of those years in Canada where i could get cheaper meds for my family..others were not so lucky..and i have great health insurance..that cost my hubby and I almost $2,000. bucks a month with our union picking up an additional $4,000. a month that equals $6,000. bucks a month for 2 people!! ..most people we know who retire can't afford the coverage and had to drop it..and are left without coverage..until they turn 65 and get medicare..

I know what our insurance cost 30 years ago compared to today..so no dear this is immediate..this isn't new to most of us who have paid for a lifetime for coverage..who took less in our salaries to have coverage..and who unionized so we would have health care only to now lose it because most can't afford it!

Please do not tell me I 'DON'T GET IT"..I FUCKING GET IT IN FUCKING SPADES!

I can't remember the name of the R senator that said the public option would be so popular that it would put insurance companies out of business and we'd end up with a single payer system. Well, what's so bad about that? If private industry can't compete and can't provide health care to everyone for a reasonable price, then I guess its the government's role to do just that.

177. Trumka Scheduled To Meet With Rahm Today To Cut Deal on Public Option
Trumka Scheduled To Meet With Rahm Today To Cut Deal on Public Option
By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday September 30, 2009 7:06 am

http://campaignsilo.firedoglake.com/2009/09/30/trumka-scheduled-to-meet-with-rahm-today-to-cut-deal-on-public-option/

We hoped it wasn't true. We hoped that when Richard Trumka committed to back a public option and threatened to withhold support from Democrats who wouldn't vote for one that it wasn't just pre-convention rhetoric.

But then the big guns came out -- Baucus decided that rather than taxing the rich, he would tax the health care plans that seriously affected AFL-CIO workers who had given up wage hikes in exchange for comprehensive health care coverage over years in contract negotiations. When Gerry McEntee rightly called the Baucus bill "bullshit" from the floor of the convention, Nancy Pelosi was then dispatched to say they were considering the same thing in the House.

I defy anyone to find me one single example of the White House twisting one arm for a public option. Just one. But when Rahm and Trumka meet today, it will be after a month of very serious threats to the AFL-CIO carried out at the highest levels. It's the kind of "arm twisting" that only the executive branch is capable of, and it has been done to crush support for a public option, not opposition.

I wrote recently about the fact that people within the AFL-CIO were getting tremendous pressure from the White House to push Trumka into backing down. And sources familiar with the situation say that since the other unions outside the AFL have already caved and are kicking Rahm's trigger football, Trumka feels he has little support for his position and no choice but to relent.

Contact the AFL-CIO and let them know that you support Richard Trumka and his commitment to the public option. Let him know that staying true to that commitment is extremely important to those of us who strongly support labor.

180. We need to stop separating the blue dogs from the rest of the party.
We really don't know how much real enthusiasm there is from the rest of our elected Democrats. Chances are that if it weren't for the blue dogs some other Democrats would step up and save the insurance companies. I say give them all a big fuck you. Clearly the blue dogs aren't listening to us. Maybe their fellow Democrats (if they feel threatened) can twist their arms and get somewhere. But I'm not inclined to let the party off the hook for the actions of a small fraction of their members. It's a political party not a group of independent politicians.

Apparently the Dems are now so scuuured of the Republicans that they just cave to them regardless, even if there were just 1 Repub in the Senate....

I say let the Repubs filibuster it and show their true colors... but put something meaningful forth, not this evicerated BS, that they apparently want to do now... Huge insurance give away and Dr. Dean said it...

Leave Your “Blame the Republicans” Emails Here!
By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday September 29, 2009 5:05 pm

I know my inbox is full of emails blaming the Republicans for killing the public option on the Senate Finance Committee. They're hilarious.

That's right, the GOP did it!

Leave yours in the comments. Maybe we'll have a drinking game to see how fast each one starts pimping triggers.

It seems to have escaped their notice that Democrats did the exact same thing they're blaming the Republicans for. Just enough of them, in fact, to make sure the public option failed.

Funny how that always works, isn't it?

Democrats are having their pockets stuffed with cash and it's buying influence and will buy their re-election, or at least a nice nest egg.

My theory on the Blue Dogs: Corporate insurance against public influence. The Dogs are hired to prevent any but Republican and pro corporate legislation. It's all just theater when Democrat whips and leaders babble about what 75% of the American citizens want.

Look at the assholes we have as party whips and leaders! Losers. The Democrats are the Washington Generals. The Corporations are the Harlem Globe Trotters.

Come to my Social Network and criticize my grammar and spelling!

the dems against the public option are proof positive that we have "democratic" posers -- Baucus, et. al.

We need to go back to hand counted paper ballots at precinct level with public oversight if we are to reclaim our democracy - could easily be done the way the jury system is run -- summoning people to handcount once every few elections
