DO NOT Listen to the Talking Heads on TeeVee!
They will tell you that today's defeat of the Rockefeller and Schumer amendments to Baucus's bill is the end of the Public Option. It isn't.

Kennedy's bill remains in the Senate. There are 3 more bills in the House.

All will need to be reconciled - the House has said a bill without a public option won't even go to vote.

It's not over folks. Dig in, keep making phone calls, writing emails/faxes and don't give up.

:hi:

4. Sure, he knows today wasn't going to happen.
Not in that committee. It was a NO from the start.

12. Agreed.
The media counts on the ignorance of the American people; it's how they get away with it.

7. Do listen to Chuck Schumer on the Tweety Show right now.
Edited on Tue Sep-29-09 04:10 PM by backscatter712
He's got a more level-headed interpretation of today's vote.

Of course, everyone else in bobblehead-land is declaring "THE PUBLIC OPTION IS DEAD!!! POP THE CHAMPAGNE!!!"

As Avalux says, there's still HR3200 (3 versions), the HELP Committee bill, floor amendments in the House & Senate, and conference committee. And if all else fails, there's reconciliation. We can lose TEN Democrats in a reconciliation Senate floor vote and still pass the bill.

We pretty much already knew that Blue Cross Baucus wouldn't let a public option out of his committee. We merely need to force him to crap his piece of shit onto the Senate Floor so it can be replaced with worthier legislation.

9. The usual suspects have been calling the Public Option "dead"
for months... They do it over and over and over again.

There used to be a Psych Text called "Anxiety and Magic Thinking" that might be useful about now.

13. Yes, Kennedy's bill is still in the Senate.
But Reid has said if he has to reconcile the Baucus crap bill with the Kennedy one, the Public Option goes.

The only way to keep the Kennedy bill intact is to kill the Baucus bill in committee. Now.

15. Melinda Hennenberg from PoliticalDaily.com says the Public Option is dead.
And Tweety agrees; says Schumer put on a good show but it isn't possible to pass a public option.

20. agreed ...
these people are such idiots. There is another senate committee that passed a strong public option that's getting no attention. And the House committees have it too. What's the big deal about Baucus and his committee? I'm so damn confused about how this bill is unfolding, and the bullshit from the idiot talking heads are no help.

21. Another perspective on today's votes:
"the most conservative bill of the bunch was just three votes shy of passing with a public option".

If only the media would frame it that way.

22. Tom Harkin promises a bill with public option will be on Obama's desk before Christmas.
He says today wasn't a set back; that if they can't get 60 votes in the Senate it'll pass with reconciliation.

Some people's naivete and willingness to see silver linings in the darkest of storms is beyond belief.

Unrecc'd for extreme naivete.
