Moore to Dems: Get on board or "we will work against you"

By Kenneth P. Vogel / Politico

Controversial liberal filmmaker Michael Moore on Tuesday issued a warning to Democrats who have been cool to President Barack Obama’s call for meaningful health care reform: Get on board or prepare to lose your seat.

“To the Democrats in Congress who don’t quite get it: I want to offer a personal pledge. I – and a lot of other people – have every intention of removing you from Congress in the next election if you stand in the way of health care legislation that the people want,” Moore told supporters of women’s groups and unions gathered at the headquarters of the government watchdog group Public Citizen. “That is not a hollow or idle threat. We will come to your district and we will work against you, first in the primary and, if we have to, in the general election.”

Democrats have started to take for granted the support of women, unions and low-income workers, according to Moore, who is promoting “Capitalism: A Love Story,” a documentary about the financial collapse due for wide release Friday.

“You think that we’re just going to go along with you because you’re Democrats? You should think again,” he told the Tuesday crowd in a speech that was carried to members of the media dialed into a conference call. “Because we’ll find Republicans who are smart enough to realize that the majority of Americans want universal healthcare. That’s right. That’s absolutely right. Don’t take this for granted.” ............(more)

No more entitlements. None of those in DC are entitled to serve in Congress.

If we don't try, then it's shame on us.

Yeah, I said it. Why waste time and effort electing someone who won't be there for the important issues? Not a penny should go to re-electing DINOs under any circumstances.

8. note to Michael Moore - please stay away from my district and state
As a communist/socialist/anti-capitalist all you can do is hurt the Democratic Party in blue districts.

I really doubt if you will sell any better in Boswell's district (where I donated some money to Ed Fallon who lost to him in a primary) or any other district. The DFA will be happy to accept your money, but keep your face and your name away from our candidates.

In many states, Michael Moore showing up will rally the base just long enough to get curbstomped by the Republican in blue dog districts. A true, blue liberal would get absolutely destroyed in Charlie Melancon's district, even if he had Obama's war chest funding his campaign.

They are the reason why people don't understand Democratic values and policies.
We'd do better politely disinviting them from our party so people could CLEARLY SEE
which part actually represents THEM and which party only represents fat-cat wealthy
folks.

as for the other, a report from a local legislator said that in the Kansas House the moderate Republicans formed a coalition with the Democrats and passed some compromise legislation. Even in Kansas, the far right does not always win.

114. You're choosing "fear" decision making --
And MM and Wm. Greider and others are shining a light on a pathway to ensuring that the right wing "wins" even less often.

Perhaps there are "moderate" Repugs left in Kansas?

However, in the Senate there are few -- notice Obama's attempts at reaching across the aisle
and working for a bipartisan agreement on reforming health care.

no, it is an actual choice we face in many elections

And what the hell is this . . . ??

"Nixon understood the anger and frustration of working-class people, the humiliation of being looked down upon by elitist

You think that progressives are "elitists" . . . ?

And do you think the DLC and Blue Dogs are your saviors?

127. I don't really know what you are talking about
but I don't think Moore is helping now.

I never said anything about DLC and Blue Dogs being saviors. What I said is that they are better than Republicans.

Take Dennis Moore (please). He's a Blue Dog. When I first moved to Kansas I saw his ads on TV. "Damn Republicans" I said to myself. Then I found out he was the Democrat.

So let's imagine that he faces a primary challenge from the left. It is quite likely he would win that challenge handily. If Michael Moore comes to Kansas and campaigns for the challenger, then it is very likely that Dennis Moore would win even bigger. In any case, however bad Dennis Moore may be, he's much better than the other three Kansans in Congress.

As for my signature line, that comes from Somerby at the Daily Howler. He says that Republicans have two major talking points. The first one is that "Big Government never did anything right" and the second one is that "liberal elites think they are better than you." Experience at DU has shown that the second one is often true. We progressives love to insult the voters. They are ignorant, stupid, stubborn, hateful, insane, and bigoted. Then after we finish telling them that, we might add, but you should vote for our guy.

So my point in using that as a signature line is that we really need to change our sales pitch, if not our attitude.

Another thing that would help is if we didn't go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao. Which is unfortunately what MM did in his latest movie "Chairman Mao: a love story"

Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 01:06 PM by defendandprotect
and was written by a Kansas native.

Most libraries have it --

Bye --

Using his home state of Kansas as the model and focal point, Frank asks rhetorically why it is that Kansans so willingly espouse right-wing social issues (creationism, defunding public schools, prayer in schools, pro-life) while simultaneously allowing their state to become economically devastated by Republican free market policies of unfettered, unregulated capitalism. In other words, why do Kansans (and many other Red Staters) vote consistently against their pocketbooks, against their own economic self-interest?

139. Wow. It's amazing that a Kansas resident like me has never heard ot that
or not

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=209x366#636

My copy is autographed by the author, although he sorta scribbled all over it, and I gave him a copy of my LTTE (which is the above link) which was printed in the Kansas City Star.

Kansas native or not, that title is insulting to Kansas and often used, even on DU, to insult Kansans. Of course, it was copied from a 1920 article by the same name, written by another distant relative Allen White.

Bottom line is, I don't think his thesis is that strong, and selling it with an insult is not a good idea either. Maybe they vote against Democrats and liberals because they've been insulted by Democrats and liberals. Sure I am an idiot to not trust the guy who seems to have contempt for people like me. Especially since the 1990s when DLCers move to the right and try to blur the difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Right wing propaganda is a too little discussed subject, even now --

It makes "up" down/"down" up and Kansas is only one state victimized by it.

(It's the dirty little secret about Napa/Sonoma wines that nobody wants to talk about -- they can't grow enough wine grapes so they come to the much-maligned San Joaquin Valley to supplement.)

93. Let's be clear not all wine producers do this. And I'd take issue that
"they can't grow enough grapes". There's plenty of grapes up here to go around.

Much-maligned San Joaquin Valley? It's not the locale, it's how the grapes are farmed and the care that goes into tending the vineyards. The Central Valley can produce good wine.

What's the big deal anyhow? What's wrong with a little blending? It makes the wine more complex.

Why would people get the wrong impression about California wine? Whether the grapes are from Napa/Sonoma or Fresno County, it's all California wine, no? Perhaps you can take some of the profits you make off your wine and invest a dollar or two in a sense of humor. :eyes: I'm bored now. <flush>

60. Pledge of the Under-Insured American
I stole this from elsewhere, but agree whole-heartedly. :-)

"Now that the possibility of real competition in health care has been shot down, I, an under-insured American, pledge the following:

The next time I catch a communicable illness (like Swine Flu), instead of going to a hospital I can't afford due to shoddy insurance, I will go instead on a tour of the Senate office buildings in D.C.

On the way to the regular elevators, my germ-laden hand will fondly touch that button for the Members-only elevator that Congressmen use to go to votes. I will share my disease-ridden wealth with those who choose to represent lobbyists and CEOs rather than the people who voted them into office."

64. I've been thinking about this tactic since I heard Michael Moore say it. I can't help but
be glad that the democrats who don't support health care reform will be "punished." But on the other hand, these democrats probably don't support health care because their districts are right-leaning. We probably can't replace these democrats with progressives, so we will end up with more republicans.

So instead of threatening these democrats, maybe it's better if Obama, Biden, etc., to go to these districts and give the people there a lot of attention and information about what health care reform means for THEM. Get them to support it by educating them, in other words.

Those are just my thoughts on it, but I am furious with democrats who aren't supporting health care reform, and I totally understand wanting to throw them out of the party altogether. Still, threatening the blue dogs is not going to get health care reform passed.

to target the biggest offenders and bribe recipients, and concentrate on eliminating them first to send a powerful message that if they choose to represent big business instead of the votedrs there is a price to be paid.
The lying weasel Max (can only pass a bill with 60 votes) Baucus tops the list.
When senators representing a few small states can shut down the will of the people the senators from those small states must be challenged by throwing money at anyone who runs agaist them.
The Internet changed everything, and some people haven't figured out that we're in the 21st Century.
Baucus and his ilk are poison to the Democratic Party. The public option is the compromise position. If they can't do that then they should never walk the halls of Congress again.

What about DLC members? They don't seem any less Republican than their Blue Dog counterparts in the Senate? I am all for any effort at pushing corporate conservatism out of the Democratic Party, but that conservative tumor doesn't begin and end with the "Blue Dogs". In addition to returning the Democratic Party to it's more populist roots, I believe that two additional measures are needed to help return Government to the people, those measures being:

(1) Term Limits, and
(2) Campaign Finance Reform

Even if the state is considered Republican, they need Democratic votes to win an election. Why do they think kissing right wing behinds is going to get them Democratic votes? Maybe they will lose as a result of voting either way, but it would be more noble to go down voting with the party you supposedly represent.

YOU DON'T GET IT!

What happens in 6 months when people are sent to prison because they can't afford the extra 1000 dollars per month for an acceptable insurance policy? People on both the right and left will threaten revolution if that doesn't change immediately. And, just as Medicare and Social Security, are never scrapped but just constantly "updated", this plan will be updated with a 'public option' which will evolve into a true single-payer plan within 5 years......For gosh sakes be a little patient. Our president campaigned on a single-payer system and he will deliver, but like he said, we will have to do it in stages. This has been the plan all along. Our socialism will come eventually. It is inevitable.
