Jerry Brown Files Paperwork For Run For Governor

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Attorney General Jerry Brown has taken the first step toward running for governor, filing official paperwork with the Secretary of State's office to start an exploratory committee.

Tuesday's filing means the former governor can collect up to $25,900 from individual donors for his potential Democratic gubernatorial bid, up from the $6,500 individuals can give him now.

Campaign adviser Steve Glazer says that allows Brown to compete against deep-pocketed Republicans.

The lower contribution limit hasn't hurt Brown so far.

In July he reported having nearly $7.4 million in the bank, compared with just $1.2 million for his only other Democratic rival so far, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

1. I don't want him or Newsom.
But I guess I'd take Brown if he could win more easily.

9. There are plenty I'd like.
A lot, in fact. Darrell Steinberg, Christine Kehoe, Ted Lieu, any number of other senators and assembly members or congressmembers. I'd like them all better than these traces of a bad time for CA Democrats. We need new blood!

10. I hear you. I know Ted Lieu; he's my representative...
I don't think he has the name recognition just yet, not the way Jerry does, of course.

Ted's going to run for AG.

Give him time...

In the meantime, Jerry's a very good man, IMHO of course.

4. Same here
the pickins are pretty slim but I guess I'll take Brown given the choices.

5. My feelings too
Machine politics at its worst. Does the Democratic Party really have no one else better to offer us?

6. Wow, he's already got himself a war chest.
Looks like some serious money will be spent on this campaign.

7. After turning 18, one of the first votes I cast was for Jerry Brown.
Edited on Tue Sep-29-09 06:51 PM by Umbral
It was a primary and he lost and the rest is a sorted and storied page of American history. But I still count that vote as one of the best I've ever had the privilege of making.

I hope I get the chance to do it again.

8. I'm deeply opposed to this,
purely because I can't see the name Jerry Brown in any context without immediately being earwormed with California Über Alles for ages afterward.

11. I'm deeply opposed to this
purely because I remember the crappy job he did the last time.

I will give hims this: he has been a very good AG. But we are still suffering from hist last time through.
