Sheriff deputy was ambushed. Sign the condolence book for wife and child
WICHITA — Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Etheridge was ambushed by a man hiding in the back yard of his house, Sheriff Robert Hinshaw said today.

Etheridge was shot twice, mortally wounded, Monday around noon while answering a call about a reported larceny at 3636 S. Rock Road.

Hinshaw said evidence at the scene indicates Richard L. Lyons, 27, was lying or sitting next to some brush and a tree with a 30-30 rifle and a cache of ammunition, waiting for the sheriff's deputy who responded to his report of a theft.

Etheridge, 26, happened to be that officer.

1. That's horrible. I don't think police body armor is effective against a 30-30
The shot to the leg probably wasn't necessary. I won't even speak about the guy who did it. I have no idea how a mind like that works.

My condolences to the family.

5. That is really horrible
It's bad enough those cops have to be in danger on the job on a regular basis, but to actually have someone purposefully ambush them is really tragic. It's sad he was so young.

9. awful crime. Condolences to Etheridge's family
Hope that the killer does not walk this land a free man ever again. I know that such a punishment will not bring the officer back, but we as a society cannot tolerate premeditated and murderous attacks upon those in public service with a mission to keep us safe.

Again, deepest condolences to Etheridge's family.

15. my apologies for not reading the full story first
After seeing your reply, I visited the link and read of the manhunt and apprehension. Glad that the perp was stopped, but very sad for the senseless murder he committed first.

Even after reading the full link, I couldn't muster the strength to watch the videos of the candle light vigil. Too sad.
