Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and Woody Allen : What is common between them ? |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-29-09 08:30 PM by UndertheOcean
They all signed a petition calling for the immediate release of Polanski.
Should their movies be boycotted , and should they be puked upon too ? They must be terrible people . Everyone in Hollywood , both male and female must be evil for not seeking revenge.

anyone who does it is at least sick if not evil and should be punished according to the laws of the land regardless of celebrity status. I don't care what a bunch of over-paid, pompous Hollywood types think. There is no wiggle room and anyone who thinks there is is just fucking out of touch with reality.
and truth be told, I'm probably a lot less likely to view any movies by the above mentioned directors after hearing them defend Polanski, that's how offensive I find it.

I'm fairly certain at this point that real artists and celebrity do not make good bedfellows. Too many greats have either died too early, became addicted to drugs, gotten involved with sex scandals, etc..

I didn't bother counting the female given names, as they numbered less than a dozen.
And I didn't even bother counting names in the second paragraph.
What does that tell you? (and don't say it says I wouldn't count two paragraphs in order to see if there is a balance)

:) Looks like there are more male names, but I'm seeing quite a number of female names in there as well so it doesn't tell me anything really.
Including... Tilda Swinton, Diane von Furstenburg, Isabelle Adjani, and Carole Laure :wow: Haven't heard anything about her in years!
It seems part of the petition is dedicated to the where and how of the arrest, objecting to his apprehension at an "international cultural event," and the possible ramifications of that for the future. I can definitely buy that part of it.

|
Traditionally, artists and intellectuals have been persecuted for their work and their words. Most writerly festivals always include the symbolic empty chair to acknowledge all the voices that are still silenced all over the world. It's a weird thing to have arrested him specifically then, when they could have gotten him on numerous occasions going in and out of the country.
I also don't think it's a matter of going along to get along, which implies coercion, but of course a lot of these people are friends and colleagues.

67. I counted 71 women. Not sure what the total number of sigs are... |
|
but would guess-timate that the women make up more than 10%. They don't all work together, nor are they even all in the same fields, so am not sure what you mean by going along to get along. Diane von Furstenburg isn't looking to star in a movie anytime soon. Most of the women I counted are filthy rich, have solid career reps and don't really need to "go along" with anything they don't want to. Only a few of the male/female sigs looked like they belonged to people who worked his last flick.
Are you implying that unlike the men, all the women who signed are spineless sycophants?
Finally, I'm not really sure why we're having this exchange. I only posted the list as I had it handy and to point out that at least some of the protest was against how the arrest was executed, which happened to bother me as well.

11. What revenge? The man raped a child. |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-29-09 09:23 PM by Avalux
If a well-respected, famous 43 year old man (Polanski) who I thought was trying to help my 13 year old daughter with her career lied to me and took her to an empty house, took nude pictures of her, fed her champagne and drugs then violated every orifice of her body, he wouldn't have survived to flee the country. (disclaimer: I would never have trusted him but the girl's mother did).
The thought of that child alone and scared, knowing what was about to happen and that she couldn't escape, sickens me to the core.
I don't give a shit if he's made good movies and I don't give a shit who signs a petition for him.

So a priest who rapes a little boy shouldn't be held accountable if a long period of time has elapsed and the boy (now man) says he doesn't want to prosecute?
BULLSHIT. The two scenarios are no different.
Polanski planned the rape - he took a 13 year old girl to an isolated location, gave her alcohol and quaaludes then did whatever he wanted to her (including sodomizing her).
She's had to live with that memory for 30 years. Quit trying to justify a rape.

Do you have any idea how many perverts would get out free because many women involved in abusive relationships beg the police to send the man back home? Some women who know their kids are being abused by the same individual will often turn a blind eye.
That's what you want? Perverts allowed to do whatever they want because someone along the way forgave them?

65. I agree with most of your posts, but I'll put this to you in a collegiate kind of way... |
|
I had a co-teacher while I was an adult school teacher who, on more than one occasion, went way out of bounds of what was appropriate in an teacher/student relationship. I went to my principal and told him about those things. Nothing happened.
THEN, the school district saw fit to send welfare mothers to adult school classes. He gravited to one particular high school student who had a certain way about her, and one day I walked in to his PHOTOSHOP class to find him at the end of a row of computers, while she was at the other end with her leg over the back of a chair.
I went to the Superintendant. Colleague or not. What he did was wrong. Wrong by a measure of MILES.
He was fired the next day. Threatened me numerous times, and I called his bluff on every one, culminating with a confrontation outside of my house, where I had the shotgun, my wife had the phone, and he had nothing more than enough alcohol to get him arrested for assault and drunk driving.
Supporting a colleague who's plied a 13 year old with champagne and Quaaludes in order to fuck her in the ass is way beyond me.

Thank you for your fortitude and being a stand up guy.
eta: Ugh, I really wish I had done some more research into this petition. I erroneously thought that it was an old petition made after the victim had stated her coming to terms with the ordeal and before his arrest when the issue looked unresolvable. But I was wrong.
The petition was created and signed after his recent arrest and detention.
And here is the part of the petition that astounds me:
"His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals."
A case of morals? Well yes, in the way that all crimes of violence are moral issues, but more importantly a criminal case with a real victim (albeit a strong survivor who has moved on).
I was wrong to assume the best about this petition.
