If so, then we must release from prison all those who are currently imprisoned for having caused harm to others.

9. Vengance is not the same as justice, either. |
|
Lots of reasons to lock someone up that do not include vengance.

4. Only if they were imprisoned in vengeance. |
|
If vengeance is the object, let's re-instate flogging? Howzat?
The purpose of incarceration is three-fold - to protect the public, to rehabilitate the offender, and to punish the offender. Your suggestion only makes sense if you ignore the first two purposes, and believe that punishment = vengeance.
Actually, vengeance has NOTHING to do with it. Vengeance is NOT justice.

7. You'd have to allow the victims to do the flogging... |
|
in order for it to be vengeance.

6. People aren't in prison just for vengeance... |
|
but for deterrence, and to protect others.
That being said, I think too many people are in prison for things that shouldn't land them there (e.g. drug taking); but if someone is a danger to others, they do need to be in prison.

8. People are in prison to protect society from them and rehab. |

It really isn't about vengeance.

16. Not for you, maybe. But it is for society as a whole. |
|
That is why there is such a thing as compassionate release - if someone is serving life, has rehabilitated in prison and is no longer a threat, and is suffering a terminal illness, most times that person will be released to die at home.
Of course, in high profile cases like Susan Atkins, people like you insist that their dying in pain is not sufficient.
Just remember, what is inflicted by you upon another will return to you ten fold. If you refuse to have compassion, you will be refused compassion.

14. vengeance is a sort of loaded word, but retribution is a part of justice. |

We in some way, we must "pay" for our crimes -- otherwise there will be no justice and no peace.

15. Where are all those who defended Megrahi's release and favored ER for Susan Atkins? |
|
I would have thought that those who voiced reservations about 'vengeance' in those threads would have taken a moment to comment here.
