a grocery store tale re: Sotomayor

the checkout woman looked very much like Sotomayor so after saying good morning I said 'you remind me of our newest, wonderful Supreme Court Judge'. she didn't speak very much English so asked the woman bagger what I said. a young black woman (who looked bored to death through the whole thing). the bagger who spoke English didn't have a clue to what I said or what it meant after I repeated it for her. just then an English speaking white woman store worker came by and the checker asked her what I was saying. I repeated it and the white woman said 'she thinks you look like a judge'. I repeated 'Supreme Court Judge Sotomayor' which from the look on her face meant nothing to her. then I said to them all. 'I was giving her a compliment'. which no one seemed to understand either.

sigh
