Fancy buying "an exceptional fisherman's cottage" in Kent, England?
From the two Estate Agents trying to sell the house: "The property offers three bedrooms, two receptions, loft room, conservatory, kitchen and bathroom. This is a property not to be missed!.... The cottage retains a great deal of its original features and several rooms still have their stained and original matchboarding to the walls and ceiling. Considered to be well presented and maintained."

Photos on their websites:

Lovely, eh?

But wait.

It's quite hard to miss those two enormous, ugly nuclear power stations looming outside the front door of the fisherman's cottage. But somehow, they escaped the notice of the estate agents who advertised the house online. Though the agents rave about the period features, double glazing and gasfired central heating, there is no mention of the Dungeness A and B plants. They even managed to leave the buildings out of their lovely panoramic shots of the surrounding area.

Unsurprisingly, prospective buyers have been shocked to arrive at the headland in Kent and see that the £247,000 three-bedroom home is just 100 yards from the perimeter fence. One house hunter, Alex Robertson, 32, said he was horrified when he turned up to view the cottage last week. 'It was unbelievable. I had seen the property online and thought it looked just right for me and my family. 'The photos make out it is an isolated cottage with nothing surrounding it at all - but that could not be further from the truth."

"These power stations are literally at your front door. There is no escaping them, they are gargantuan." He added: 'I didn't need to look inside the house. One look at the power station and I was on my heels and off.'

A spokesman for Geering & Colyer, based in nearby New Romney, said: 'The thing is that anywhere on Dungeness is close to the power station. Anyone who wants to know the location of any property in relation to it can just go on to Google Earth.' Its website says of the house: 'Located on the Dungeness National Nature Reserve is this exceptional detached fisherman's cottage set in approximately half an acre

6. It cries out for a spite fence
That's an 8 to 10 foot high board fence that's used to screen out an ugly neighbor, usually one with derelict cars and appliances strewn over his lot.

If you kept it close to the property, you could effectively screen the power plant from within the property.

Then it might be a nice place to live. Power plants aren't generally terrible neighbors, there are worse.

Beagle breeders and tire shops come to mind.

14. They don't have The Google in England?
I never go anywhere new without checking an online map. I am a little skeptical of how shocked, shocked, prospective buyers were to find a nuke plant at this address.

although the Daily Mail piece is pretty funny, nevertheless.

17. So? Do they make too much noise?
My only complaint is that the price seems high but then again that is in the UK so maybe not so high. If you don't like it don't live there. I'd rather live next to a nuke plant than a lot of things and I doubt this guys lights will ever be off.

24. Actually he might not need to heat it in the winter because of dumping the waste heat will probably
keep it warm. Might also make the fishing better from the waste heat.

People are totally tinfoil paranoid about nuclear power. We had the Neely nuclear research reactor (5MW) downtown Atlanta on the Georgia Tech campus for decades until they closed it in 1996 for the Olympics for security reasons.

Nuclear power beats the crap out of coal power in the environmentally clean business and hydropower has huge risks associated with it from dam collapses that people totally gloss over. Nashville is downstream from a dam that could easily go in the near future due to a fundamental flaw in where it was placed.

18. Why are the realtors being sneaky assholes?
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 01:59 PM by sudopod
It isn't like they are actually going to fool anyone.

Chances are someone who works at the power station wouldn't mind living within walking distance of work. They should advertise it that way.
