Cops: Woman fried, ate goldfish amid fight with ex

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

(09-30) 06:13 PDT Pasadena, Texas (AP) --

Authorities say a Houston-area woman who was burned up at her former common-law husband fried their pet goldfish and ate some of them.

Pasadena police say it's a civil matter and no charges will be filed. The seven goldfish were purchased together by the couple during happier times.

Police spokesman Vance Mitchell says the man reported on Saturday that the woman took the goldfish from his apartment.

Mitchell says the two argued earlier about some jewelry the man had given her but took back. She wanted the jewelry returned.

Officers who were dispatched to the woman's home arrived to find four fried goldfish on a plate. The woman said she already ate the other three.

People are just cruel.

We have Mickeys at work we all take care of. I'd be ticked if someone ever purposely hurt them. Cute little boogers.

A goldfish isn't as cute as a kitten but it's still an innocent animal. This shit's just wrong.

23. Not necessarily. They don't possess mental capacity anywhere near something like a dog or cat.
They do not suffer like other animals would suffer under similar circumstances.

44. Wrong. It's horrible and cruel
Goldfish have been hybridized for thousands of years as pets. They've got personalities. They can also feel pain. I can't understand how someone can live with another creature and not feel some attachment.

Fish may not be cuddly like mammals, but they're still owed decent, kind treatment. (Which reminds me, it's time to give one of my fish his meds.)

55. Ever heard of "feeder fish"? They're the cheap goldfish in the pet store...
... the ones that always need a "burial at sea" after a relatively short time in your kids' tank. Fa-Lush. Because they were never meant to be anything but some other aquarium-fish's meal.

Of course they're owed decent kind treatment. But even so, at least this woman didn't swallow them alive, which was the frat-boy fad in the 1930s.

2. Goldfish: It's the new Carp
Actually, they are closely related to carp, which is one of the main food fishes in Asia, so despite the creepiness factor, I'm sure she is OK and it probably tasted pretty good.

16. Depends on what the fish were treated with.
Just about every med and dechlor I've used specifically bars use for food fish. A treatment I used recently has formaldehyde in it.

Anyway it's the principle of the matter. Anger is not an excuse for torturing and killing animals.

28. If they were pets - yes. Extreme emotional distress + actual cost of the fish.
Clearly this act was deliberately intended to inflict extreme emotional distress.

29. I will personally purchase the man 50 new goldfish and fedex them to him.
It costs 75 cents per gold fish. I've never met a person that grew emotionally attached to a gold fish.

If some crazy chick ate my goldfish, I would laugh and think she was crazy. I would not be depressed over the fact that I'm out 1.50.

35. If they weren't important to him, I doubt she would have gone to the trouble of eating them.
This is like breaking a guy's stereo or big screen TV, keying his car, tagging it with grafitti or wrecking it, sleeping w his best friend, running up a huge phone bill, burning his CD collection, taking his dog to the pound, etc., etc. a passive aggressive tactic designed to inflict emotional distress.

Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 03:51 PM by armyowalgreens
If someone has a strong emotional attachment to goldfish, they need to get out more often.

You might as well have an emotional attachment to a pet rock.

She did not damage an exorbitant amount of property. She did not steal massive amounts of money. She ate a couple goldfish.

She is probably unstable. But this is not equal to sleeping with someones friend. That's just absurd.

39. You don't get to decide that - emotional distress is what she intended to cause and she knew what
was doing. That is sufficient.

43. That's for a jury to infer from the evidence.
I'd be willing to take it out on her bank account in a major way if I were on such a jury - I'd say $50,000 just to make a point.

(FYI: I have a 55 gallon aquarium full of fish and this kind of "bunny boiling" crap would really piss me off if I were the victim of it.)

Hell no.

The story doesn't say - he may have well been a righteous asshole and abused her or cheated on her - but that doesn't give her the right to kill an innocent pet.

49. In gender studies
In cultural terms, phallocentrism is used to describe a male-centered doctrine or behavior, and sometimes refers to patriarchy, while gynocentrism is used to describe female-centered doctrine or behavior, and sometimes refers to matriarchy. Furthermore, the term yonic has often been used to describe something as vaginal and is considered the counterpart to the term phallic
