White House drafting fallback healthcare bill, report says

By John Byrne
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 -- 10:50 am

The Obama Administration is quietly drawing up its own healthcare plan behind the scenes as a fallback measure should healthcare legislation get tied up in Congress, according to a report Wednesday.

The report, printed in the registration-restricted Capitol Hill publication Roll Call, alleges that the administration may have a fully fledged healthcare bill in the wings, aimed at enticing moderate Democrats and even some Republicans to jump on board. It also posits that Obama may have had a reason for being so specific about a potential bill's pricetag -- no more than $900 billion -- because his team had already drafted their own bill behind the scenes.

1. I like the idea, but how does a President get HIS bill to the floor
for a vote?

2. I wish he had presented his bill, in full measure..on Jan 21st
when the repubs were in full retreat, and total public disregard...and when Obama's approval ratings were 70-something.. It would probably have sailed through..and Teddy would have still been alive to see it.

4. Groups had been working, planning already fully engaged, so plan should have proceeded. Baucus was
charged for testing limits of GOP support, various ways of paying, but we didn't need his few extra months to disintegrate altogether.

3. Well that's trigger option, if GOP targeted. Even public option doesn't totally address costs, and
years remain to iron out all we need in health care. I know budget unforgiving now, but public option included in structure of exchange, even minimally to start-like Schumer's bill, is a necessary start.
