Palin not a big draw on the lecture circuit
Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 02:47 PM by Liberal_in_LA
Source: LA Times

She quit as governor of Alaska in the middle of her term, presumably to cash in on her new-found fame as the Republican Party's first female candidate for vice president. Feisty and controversial, Sarah Palin was thought to be a magnet for moneyed interests seeking star-power speakers.

But now the New York Post is reporting that Palin has been a difficult sell for the Washington Speaker's Bureau, which represents everybody from former President George W. Bush to magician David Blaine. Offered at $100,000 a speech, Palin is not attracting as many offers as might have been expected.

"Palin is polarizing, and some subscribers might cancel if she's on the lineup," one industry rep told the Post.

Still, Palin does have a deep well of fans. Publication date for Palin's memoir, "Going Rogue," has been moved up to Nov. 17, with a first printing of 1.5 million copies, so she's got an obvious conservative audience out there somewhere.

From NY post:

Many big lecture venues are subscription series, "and they don't want to tick people off," said our source. "Palin is polarizing, and some subscribers might cancel if she's on the lineup." Other lecture buyers are universities, which have a leftist slant, and corporations, which dislike controversy.

"Palin is so uninteresting to so many groups -- unless they are interested in moose hunting," said our insider. "What does she have to say? She can't even describe what she reads."

1. Ha! She is worthless as a speaker...she can barely make a coherent sentence.
My husband is not political at all and thinks she is a total idiot. She will keep people away, not bring them in. So much for "quitting".

6. Wouldn't it be great
If everything Palin did from now on was so full of fail that her job as governor of Alaska was the highlight of her career path... and he quit that? Oh, that would be such delicious (and well-deserved) schadenfreude.

7. Polarizing speakers never make it on the circuit.
Just for the reason they mentioned - who wants to book someone who will cause 50% of their attendees to cancel? I did it when neil effing boortz was invited to speak at a business convention. They called me to ask why and I told them the ONLY reason I was cancelling was because of him. I think they were suprised.

8. And yet they think the book is going to sell
which is will, a bit, but not much. Chris Matthews has been going on about how Palin can make a hundred grand a night speaking, and I have been wondering who's going to pay her and for what. She does not speak well to say the least, and she is not informed enough to have the podium in any room that can afford to pay her....but Chris was dang sure she'd get rich, and quick, as if she'd be sought after, and I had to laugh at him for it. Still do. He's transparent.

11. It will sell for the same reason Ann Coulter's sell:
Rght wing groups buy the books up in bulk and then give them away to their people. For example, people who subscribe to the National Review might be offered a free copy of Palin's book, just as they are typically offered free copies of Coulter's books. Those that get their free copies often don't even read them (many are not exactly big readers anyway).

Even Palin's superfans probably won't read the book when it is given to them, first, because they aren't readers, but also because it's obvious that the book has to be ghost written, so since she didn't write it, they won't get the thrill they would get from reading their idol's very own words.

gave us all a RW book that he signed himself to us, that he didn't write. It was weird getting his political goodbye present. I figure he gave out about 50 copies of the book. I don't want to say which one because I figure I'll be recognized - being one of the few liberals there.

13. Oh, ALLEGEDLY, it is a big hit alrady at B&N and Amazon (preorders)
Just two days after HarperCollins announced that the release of Palin's memoir, "Going Rogue," had been moved up from the spring to Nov. 17, preorders for the former Alaska governor's book have made it No. 1 on Barnes&Noble.com on Wednesday and at No. 2 on Amazon.com, trailing only Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol.

10. I have yet to see any proof that she has "a deep well of fans".
That's not a statistic I'm going to take on faith.

Her fan base is loud and dumb, but not deep.

"Palin's bookers are said to be asking for $100,000 per speech, but an industry expert tells Page Six: "The big lecture buyers in the US are paralyzed with fear about booking her, basically because they think she is a blithering idiot."

Trick shooting off the back of a charging moose. Throwing axes in the air at Todd to give him a buzz cut while he circles the stage on a snowmobile. The act really needs refreshing.
