10. I can see the FSM being photoshopped in, just above the head of Jesus
with his noodly appendages blended in with the clouds (which sorta look like noodly appendages to begin with)...the appendages reaching out and touching the shoulders of the people who have the misfortune of being included in the mind-fuck

The soldier with the modern uniform is supposed to be a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. So the ah, artist says...

135. I stand corrected. But I'd still say
minorities are more absent from this painting than warranted. And Mrs Palin believes in witchcraft. As witch-burnings were the only human sacrifices the Christians have (sorely mistaken) brought to our God, I'd rather place Mrs Palin in a painting called "One nation, slipping away from under God".

One soldier (though how the hell would a guy in the military be a tribute to MLK, a pacifist? And it was Truman who desegregated the military long before the March on Selma)

There's the immigrant who I guess is Asian? Hard to tell

And there's the college student. So I guess we should be happy that at least this guy knows that black people can learn stuff.

There's also the black civil war soldier (who was fighting against the conservatism of his day)

Frederick Douglas and harriet Tubman (also Liberals of their day. Abolitionism and racial equality were NOT conservative positions in the 1860s)

And there's Sequoyah, the Cherokee who invented their written language.

This just goes to show how cons often co-opt history without even bothering to understand it first.

I mean, they can't show anything "overtly" gay because the whole point is to shove them back in the closet, but the unbuttoned shirt and jacket and the odd pose (and the lack of any more obvious candidates) strikes me as just vaguely "faggy" enough for a Bizzaro-land picture like this.

What else would he be? Hollywood celebrity? (and hey, it could be double-duty as both.)

SATAN!

You can go to the artist's site and see a version with scroll-over captions describing the significance of every figure in this Work for the Ages.

I guess the author avoided painting gay men for the usual reasons.

I wonder if all those great Americans who died before the Pledge was changed to include "under God" in 1954 are burning in hell. Clearly, they didn't give God and Jesus their proper place.

Which was the first generation of American high school grads to burn the flag? Why, the ones who started pledging "under God" in 1954, and pledged it every day in school for the next 12 years!

That worked great, didn't it?!

"These men and women were passionately religious and saw the hand of God all around them..."

Here are some things Franklin wrote:

"The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason." Poor Richard's Almanack, 1758

"Lighthouses are more helpful than churches."

"He (the Rev. Mr. Whitefield) used, indeed, sometimes to pray for my conversion, but never had the satisfaction of believing that his prayers were heard." Franklin's Autobiography

Some posters here have asked where the minorities are in this pic. My guess given the weeping union soldier is that they are all on the plantations, like they are supposed to be, except for the few "OK" (i.e. white acting) tokens. After all, the union was wrong, wrong, wrong. And if they had any shame or intelligence they would know it and repent before Lord Jeebus.

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this case, ugly goes to the bone.

It isn't even that well done. He saw a niche of stupid church dwellers who would pay to have art that reflected their twisted souls and he exploited it. I hope he is laughing all the way to the bank.

The rest of the stuff on his website is pure crap, IMHO.

190. You're correct. Jesus is black.
Think about it:

God is black.

We know because the Good Book tells us so. It says He made the first humans in His own image. And it's a matter of archaeological record that the first humans were Africans. So, clearly, God is black.

The Bible also tells us that Jesus is the Son of God. Obviously, if Dad is black, his Son is going to be black.

So: God's black. Jesus is black. And some of these pseudo-Christian racist righties are gonna be in for a big surprise when their Judgment Day comes!

32. Oh for the love of FSM.
There are so many things wrong here. On the left are two civil rights leaders who are literally the furthest back in the crowd. There are only two other black dudes and an asian guy and the rest are white people. Jesus is portrayed as some Nordic godlike being. Ronald Reagan is so prominent he rivals Jesus for eyeball time. Then he randomly sticks an astronaut in there? WTF ever.

There's one being held by the black guy in the white shirt in the lower left side and the academic looking guy(?) in the upper lower right also has a book.

Is it Mika with the microphone? Ha! Sure looks like her!

There's no title on the book held by the black guy. Guess the McNaughton couldn't think of a single book that he considers fit to be read by American students, other than the Bible.

Mika's not really liberal media. None of them are.

"Professor"'s book is "The Origin od Species" by Charles Darwin (of course)

The book held by the guy next to the marine is "The Five Thousand Year Leap". The author, in three words: Glen Beck's Guru.

it gives you the artists interpretation for each figure.

For example, the immigrant in the lower left is cowering before the white Jesus because he's a heathen. Also, America is good because we have freedom of religion, including these cowardly heathens.

183. There is something disturbing about thinking America is God's chosen country.

There is something disturbing about portraying Jesus as an Anglo in an attempt to pretend that White men are God's chosen people.

There is something disturbing about taking men famous for their Atheism/Deism and pretending they were devout Christians (e.g. Franklin, Payne, Jefferson, Washington and probably more in that pic).

113. Well, this beholder sees a LOT of
easily led astray people mesmerized by a false prophet. There is NO way that the Jesus Christ depicted in 'The New Testament' of 'The Holy Bible' would appear in such fine raiments.

Honestly, this reminds me of nothing so much as the scene from 'The Ten Commandments' where the people are worshipping the Golden Calf.

Nope, change the name of the work to 'False Prophet' and I am almost in complete agreement with this opus. The only two things I would change. Put the money counter from the bottom lower right corner IMMEDIATELY to the right of the False Jesus, whispering into his ear. The other change I would make is to add an image of the 'Real' Jesus to the group at the lower left, agonizing over those so obviously led astray by glitter and the promise of money.

Anyway, the artist's space for other citizens was limited by having to have the center be dominated by The Greatest American of Them All: Jesus H. Christ, Himself.

The only space in contemporary Amerika for blacks is in the military! And preferably the Marines or the Army, certainly not the Air Force or Navy. Oh, and Asian- and Native-Americans? Sorry. You don't exist in history or contemporary society at all.

144. Got the court cases!
Thanks to the magnified view first linked to in #53:
Scattered on the steps are:

Marbury vs. Madison (1803): established judicial review
Martin vs. Hunter's Lessee (1816): first case to assert ultimate Supreme Court authority over state courts in matters of federal law
Gibbons vs. Ogden (1824): established Congress' power to regulate interstate commerce
Everson vs. Board of Education (1947): a church-state matter, strengthened separation
Roe vs. Wade (1973): needs no introduction
Kelo vs. New London (2005): permitted eminent domain seizures for private development projects.

Interesting and very telling what he considers the Supremes worst decisions (and which ones he doesn't). Heck, I even agree about the last one, but it doesn't rate being in the top 6 bad decisions.

201. According To This Painting..........
..............the two Bushes are dead and playing poker in Heaven, which is apparently somewhere in France (see the French flag in the background?) Apparently Lincoln has told some sort of joke. Everybody's laughing. Ford doesn't seem like he really got it, and is just smiling politely so people don't think he's stupid. Wonder what the joke was.

This just proves how little this painter knows about American history. Lincoln, Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt, and believe it or not, Nixon, would refuse to be seen with those other jerks. Nixon was actually one of the more liberal Presidents we've had.

Or is it just that Presidents who started/continued wars get to play at the poker table of Heaven (even if some of them aren't dead yet)?

200. There's So Much Wrong With This, I Don't Even Know Where To Begin
The thing that stuck out to me more than anything is the bottom right corner. Isn't the guy in the suit, ignoring everything going on around him whilst counting his money the very EMBODIMENT of the Republican Party?

Why is Jesus holding the Constitution? The artist SEEMS to be saying that the Judge is bad because he enforced the law that says you can't have religious symbols on public property. But where did he get that nonsense? Gee, from the VERY DOCUMENT Jesus is brandishing. And I think the little kid is trying to point that out to him, but Jesus ain't listenin'.

Why are the Founding Fathers standing there with Jesus? They didn't believe in him. They were Deists. I wish George Washington was holding a sign with his famous quote, "The government of the United States is in no way based upon the Christian religion."

Why does Jesus love the soldiers? He was rabidly anti-war. Maybe for a change, some of you Bible-thumpers should actually READ that book you brandish like a weapon. Kinda like the Health Care Bill, they admonish EVERYONE ELSE to read it, but have never actually done so themselves.

Why is the Confederate soldier crying? Because he had the audacity to secede from "God's Favorite Country"?

Why is Frederick Douglass in the background? The Bible says owning slaves is A-OK. And did he stand back there voluntarily, or did Jesus make him sit at the back of the bus?

What's that Asian guy doing at the bottom left corner? He's more than likely Hindu, and therefore doesn't even believe in Jesus, much less get a Hall Pass to Heaven.

Way in the back, fourth from the left.........is that Aunt Jemima? I didn't realize making a damn good pancake got you a Hall Pass to Heaven. Apparently Jesus is a pancake freak.

Why is Christa McAuliffe in that picture? NASA astronauts are all scientists and intellectuals. God hates BOTH of those (see the intellectual college professor, clutching the book by a scientist, down there in the "undesirable" pile).

Jesus apparently hates cell phone users (see the guy on the phone), but isn't he really just a pair of thick glasses away from being the Verizon guy?

Jesus apparently hates unwed mothers (as evidenced by the pregnant woman conspicuously NOT wearing a wedding ring). If He's so against sex out of wedlock, He's probably got some very serious "Daddy Issues." Good thing cheating wives, mothers of bastards, and filandering men weren't considered bound for damnation until AFTER He was born.
