Clinton: U.S. out of Iraq by January '09

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday that President Bush should withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq before he leaves office, asserting it would be "the height of irresponsibility" to pass the war along to the next commander in chief.

"This was his decision to go to war with an ill-conceived plan and an incompetently executed strategy," the Democratic senator from New York said her in initial presidential campaign swing through Iowa.

"We expect him to extricate our country from this before he leaves office" in January 2009, the former first lady said.

The White House condemned Clinton's comments as a partisan attack that undermines U.S. soldiers.

About 130,000 American troops are in Iraq and Bush has announced he was sending 21,500 more as part of his new war strategy.

Clinton held a town hall-style forum attended by about 300 activists, giving a brief speech before taking questions for nearly an hour. Pressed to defend her vote to authorize force in Iraq before the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, Clinton responded by stepping up her criticism of Bush.

"I am going to level with you, the president has said this is going to be left to his successor," Clinton said. "I think it is the height of irresponsibility and I really resent it."

1. "and I really resent it"
Does she already assume that the mess would be hers to inherit?

6. I think it's a good sign that even Hillary Clinton has to say this now.
As John Lennon said, "The war is over (if you want it)."

Of course it's not quite as simple as that--when everybody wants it to be over, except the one illegitimate asshole in the White House and his puppet master, and associated war profiteers.

But Hillary's been on the wrong side of this for a very long time--way, way behind the country. And it's great that she has to admit it. Odd that she would put it in such a personal way--as if to say, get rid of this mess before *I'm* in the White House. Not that it's wrong (more killing there today--escalation), illegal, unjust, ill intentioned, murderous, greedy, contrary to the will of the American people (!). But that Bush had better clean up his droppings before he gets booted. That way of speaking doesn't inspire. What we need is inspiration, vision, hope--a direction to go in, away from militarism and this war industry economy. The ONLY vision I've picked up, that has really moved me, is Al Gore's, which addresses the nightmare of a trashed planet, but with a great positive projection that we can re-tool our economy and our lifestyles, and rebuild our country, after the Bush Junta wrecking ball, with creative, innovative, green practices, products and technical expertise. This seems the most comprehensive idea to me. We can't just stop being belligerent. We can't just stop feeding the "military-industrial" beast. We can't just patch up our broken society--with health care and a minimum wage hike. We need a total makeover and a defining set of ideas. We need to think "green" in every field of endeavor, from food to transportation, from product manufacture to the size and solar orientation of our living spaces. It's exciting. It speaks to America's "can do" attitude. It calls for the best in us. And Hillary Clinton just doesn't do that. She may win, cuz she has the most money. And, who knows?, she may put together a good team, even a "green" team. But she's so old hat in so many ways--I mean, Terry McAuliffe and James Carville, what better expression of who she is! They give me the shudders. I think they are exceedingly corrupt.

Anyway, sorry to ramble. But I am glad that the current frontrunner has had to say at least this much about Iraq: that she doesn't want this disaster dumped on her doorstep. It says something about US--we, the people. We are having an impact.
